Markdown Meat

I went to the grocery store yesterday to buy a few things to get us through until Christmas and ended up spending far more than I had intended to spend because they had several things that were marked down. All of the things that had sell by dates of 12/24 and 12/25 were marked down 50 percent because if they didn't sell it soon it would all go to waste. So, I being the person that loves to spend money that I am, bought all of the things that our family likes. I came home and threw it all into the freezer. My question is, do you ever look at the discount meat at the grocery store? Do you buy it on a regular basis? I do whenever I see it because I know if I am going to freeze it right away it is going to be fine for me to thaw and eat when we are ready to eat it.

I do! I do! Unfortunatly, one can't always afford regular prices. And sale prices especially on mean many times are an insult! Our local grocery store chain brags how $1.99/lb for 75% ground beef is such a deal! Why when I can buy a roll of ground turkey for $1.19/lb?!?!? And I don't get heartburn like I used to from all the fat. I do find many things marked down and I buy whatever is there that my family likes. You may think you spent too much the day you found the deal but just think how full your freezer is, how little you spent, and how long it will last. I've never had a problem with anything I've bought. If it looks funky don't buy it, just like anything else you'd buy & it'll be a-ok!

Sadly I know prices have gone up but no $1.99 is not a deal of course they want to charge you like $2.50/lb for that otherwise! But with my gall bladder issues (even though it's been removed) it's easier on me & hubby as well to do the turkey... it just takes alot more seasoning for it to hold the flavor. Now I don't care for the Jennie-o turkey store too expensive and it's super dry.

Once you mention the gall bladder problems, you really put it into perspective. My mother had her gall bladder removed many, many years ago but ever since then her digestive system has never been the same again.

I myself can't handle the ground turkey except on very rare occasions. But saying $1.99/lb on 75/25 ground beef is a good deal, who are they trying to fool. I don't have different criteria under which I judge the marked down meat that I will buy other than the same criteria that I use for the other meat that I buy and I too have never had a problem with it.

They don't seem to have discounted meat to often at walmart. I went to aldi's a few times and they had tons of it so i bought as much as i could lol. i do the same thing. I take it home and freeze it for a later use. It's a great way to save money and stock up your freezer.

I too have noticed that it is difficult to find discounted meat at Wal-Mart. I tend to have much better luck finding discounted meat when I am at Sam's Club over Wal-Mart.

At Walmart you have to get it right when they mark it down. It goes pretty fast there. I noticed when I shopped at Walmart more often that I could find it early in the morning.

I look for it all the time. If I don't buy it then I can't afford meat. It's usually chicken and turkey that's marked down well. The beef, lamb and pork are only ever marked down a few cents. It's all just so expensive...I really cannot afford it. It's a good thing I love chicken and turkey....lol

We too eat a lot of chicken at our house because of the fact that it is generally cheaper than beef or other red meats. I've never been one to eat a lot of turkey or pork just because they don't really suit my fancy.

We buy a quarter cow so that we are getting a good deal on our meat and freeze it. I just set aside the money we will need to buy that meat from our monthly budget and we buy what we can afford when the time comes up. If we do extra well that month we can set aside more money for the things we stock up on and we are hoping that next year we can buy a half of beef and possibly a pig too. It all adds up but takes a lot of planning.

I think that we would do something like this if we knew of a way to do it local to where we live. Only once in my life have I known someone that has been able to do this and it was many years ago when my father was still alive.

Do I buy markdown meat on a regular basis? Oh yes! In fact, I never pay full price for meat unless it's on a half price offer or the freezer is empty. I've even left it in the fridge for a couple of days before using it. The 'use by' date is just a guide, and its usually erring on the safe side. Usually, I do what you do and heave it all into the freezer.

Oh, if I am planning on using it in the next day or so, then I will leave it in the fridge, but if I have no clue as to when I will be using it, then I will go ahead and freeze it.

Oh yes, I always look at discount ANYTHING when I go to the grocery store! Discounted meat is perfectly good (but do inspect it carefully!) - and it's priced to sell! I do try to buy up on a regular basis, but I do have to keep in mind that we don't have a whole lot of room in our freezer. I love it when beef roasts are discounted . . . I've gotten stuff for my crock pot at $2 - $3 (enough for us). Just before St. Patrick's day, corned beef goes on sale, and again I can get it for $2 -$3 a package, so I'll buy a few to shove in the freezer for us to eat it at other times in the year. As much as I love "clearance" meats, I do look at them .. .make sure there isn't too much "gray" in the beef or dark yellow spots on chicken with bloody liquid coming out of the package!

I agree with you, it is very important to make sure that the meat doesn't look bad in the package. Also, when the meats that we like to buy are on sale for a really good price (not the discounts, just sale price) I will buy it up then to freeze. One of my favorite things is when they have whole sirloin on sale and then I will get them to grind it for me and I have plenty of ground beef to last a while.

I always check out the discount bin, even when I'm not shopping for meat. I've found some good buys there, and eaten meat that I couldn't have afforded otherwise. Like you, I toss it in the freezer as soon as I get home and it keeps fine.

It is nice to be able to treat ourselves to something nice every now and then and it is the discount part of the meat department that allows us to do things like that as well. I love filet, but if it wasn't for discounts there would be no way that we would be able to afford it.

And I'd be willing to bet that it tasted even better knowing that your husband had spent less on it than the people the day before had done.

Yeah I do I think you get a good bargain I have bought hamburger meat that was marked down and it was good but the only thing you have to watch is it's a little brown I am a sucker for bargains like the next person. But if you can get a good deal go for it.

As long as I have room in my freezer and the extra money when I go shopping, I buy whatever everyone likes that is on sale. I don't buy things just because I have a great coupon if it's something no one will ever eat. I'm glad you found such great bargains!

I'm the exact same way as you are in the sense of coupon using. I won't use a coupon no matter how good it is if it is something that we don't eat or something that we don't use.

hi doranmwin I sometimes did and had a good bargain, but several times I found that they should have tossed the meat as it had that rainbow color on it that told me it had freezer burn and was already too old to be safe to eat.if its already starting to spoil freezing will not help as when your thaw and cook it you will find it has a horrible taste, its meat starting to rot so you do have to be careful when choosing it.if it has to be tosses you did not save any thing.

The meat that I am referring to was still a few days before it's sell by date, and it still looked great so I knew that it would be safe. I do always pay attention and make sure that the things that I buy still look good and safe to eat.

I definitely check out the marked down meat when I go to the grocery store. In fact, pretty much the only time I'll buy a roast is if it's heavily discounted. I do the same as you, as soon as it gets home it goes in the deep freeze, so if it's best before day is tomorrow it's really not a big deal.

I believe that it is discounted meat that is the only reason that we have a chest freezer. In an ideal situation I would be able to keep that stocked full of meat, but that hasn't been able to happen for us lately.

We don't have anything like that out here - wish we did. You did the right thing as January always seems a LONG month to get through until pay day. Mind you I never have ever taken my pay before Christmas. My first Boss warned me of the dangers of doing so. Therefore I will collect my pay check at the end of December not tomorrow. You shop the right way - you may have gone over budget but you will benefit in the long run. fifty percent off? You cannot go wrong buying it all up.

As far as pay goes, my husband gets paid on a weekly basis and the main reason that I was able to buy all of the meat that I bought was because last week, despite our financial difficulties early in the week, he did have 20 hours of overtime last week so I was able to catch up on the bills and have a little bit of extra grocery money as well.

I buy meat from a place called save-a-lot where I'm from. It is cheaper than the prices at the supermarket. I have never had a problem with it. Just be sure to smell and touch the meat before you cook it. If it smells bad or feels slimey, don't use it.

Would you believe that there is a Save-A-Lot less than a mile away from our home and I've never been there. It actually isn't really common for me to go to Kroger either, the only reason that I was there that day was because I needed to get some ornament hooks to finish decorating our Christmas tree and I decided I would pick up a few groceries as well. I actually tend to do the majority of my grocery shopping at Aldi's because the prices are the cheapest, but the food is just as good as the pricer counterparts.

I usually do not buy the vegetables or meats whose prices are marked down by 50%. Usually such vegetables and meats are not so good for the health. At the same time, if I see a freebie attached to something like a coffee, or a soap or a toothpaste, I usually buy two or three of it, so that I can use it for at least 2 to 3 months at the same time, use the freebie also. But vegetables and meats, never.

Quite right about that point dorannmwin. I have also purchased, the bagged salads, when they are marked down. The reason being that it can be consumed immediately, and usually it is not very bad, because of the cellophone packing.

I typically avoid the produce that is marked down because most of the time it seems like that should have already been relegated to the trash bin. However, I will make slight exceptions to this rule when it comes to bagged salad. I will buy bagged salad that is marked down if we are going to eat it that day and I can tell that it isn't slimy at all.

hey good for you! what a great way to save money. we go to a butcher whose prices are generally cheaper than the grocery store and buy a lot of meat there. we have a big chest freezer and we save money that way too!

What I really like to do because there is only one butcher in town is to go to the warehouse store and buy my meat in bulk when I've actually got the money and then divide it down into portions that I need for one meal for our family. However, money has been an issue lately so I haven't even been able to do that. Maybe one day this week while I'm not babysitting I will run to Critchfield and see what their prices look like.

yea,i do..i like a bargain particularily on meat. most of the time it's just fine in the freezer,or i can use some of it right away. the thing i don't get is why chicken is now higher than lamb..i guess nobody was buying it at the ridiculous prices they wanted for it.

I do enjoy eating lamb every now and then, but I've never bought it at the supermarket because I don't know how to prepare it. Therefore, I've never noticed this dispute in the price.

When my ex used to live here and he ate a lot of meat we would buy meat from the store and freeze it until we were going to use it. My son is the only one in the house that eats meat and he doesnt eat enough to bother freezing it before it goes bad. He usually just eats sliced turkey or pepperoni or hot dogs. Some stores meat is good past the sell by date but our local store the meat starts to go bad before the sell by date so I wouldnt buy meat from there unless I was pretty much going to use it that night.

I havent bought lean ground beef in a little over a year. My ex was a huge meat eater but the only one in my house that eats meat now is my 3 year old son. He doesnt eat all that much though. I do remember that lean ground beef was almost double the price of regular ground beef and even at that regular ground beef was never $1.19 a pound so I'd say you got lean ground beef for about a 60-75% discount. Looks like you made out great. What we would do when we came across great sales is to buy the big packages then I would freeze the amount by 1/2 lbs or 1 lbs in ziplock bags. So say we had a 10 lb package of beef I'd divide it into 10 bags so when I went to cook a meal I could just thaw the exact amount I needed.

I've always been quite lucky that our store meat is still in really good shape on the day before the sell by date. In fact, this week when I went to do my grocery shopping, I really got lucky. They were bringing markdown meat out as I was looking at the meat. They had actually marked it down too far and it was marked at $1.19 a pound for lean ground beef. You can bet that I cleaned up on that. I brought it home and repackaged it into what we need for our family. I put one bag in the fridge for the following night and I froze the rest of it. We were all very content with it and I love getting a hold of lean ground beef.

OMG! Yes. I just bought some yesterday and the week before that and the week before that.. lol I love getting a big steak and they give a sticker of $2,$3 or even $5 off. It's really the only way to be able to afford to eat. Then I get home cut off a hunk -give it to my (unemployed) roommate - he uses it to cook with..cuts into pieces.. And I fry myself up a big meal that usually ends up 2 meals!

They used to do the coupons at our grocery store as well, but I haven't seen those in forever, now they just do manager's special. Regardless of this, a bargain is a bargain and they always make me happy.

Well, this takes me back to the days of my childhood. It is a great way to save money though. As would be going to the abattoir(slaughterhouse)instead of the grocery store, or even talking to local hutterites and farmers. Going direct, if you have the skills to break down the sides of the meat is the least expensive by far. But if those sources aren't available, you have found the next least expensive thing, and you don't even have to thaw most of it, just cook from frozen, 25-50 degrees less heat for about 15 minutes more per pound. Gets about the same quality as thawed first, and many things are recommended to be cooked from frozen. Cheers.

For us, going to a slaughterhouse isn't really an option. Although, I do remember my father buying a half cow when I was a child and we ate off of that meat forever. I'm definitely the kind of person that looks for a bargain whereever I can find it.
