On Friday, December the 4th, the preacher and his wife from my church took several members and myself to Mary Bobo's Boarding House up in Lynchburg, Tennessee to eat lunch. The facility itself was beautifully decorated for the holiday season and they had Christmas music playing all over the place, even in the restrooms. The scenery on the way up there and back was beautiful because it's in a mountainous area. If you would like to read more about Mary Bobo's Boarding House, here is the link. This is not a referral link: http://huntsville.about.com/cs/daytrips/a/bobo.htm. As some of you probably know, Lynchburg, Tennessee is also the home of the Jack Daniels Distillery and as the article says, this is served with the meals at Mary Bobo's. Since we were members of the church, we didn't have any whiskey. Our hostess was also a member of the church. We had turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, okra, sweet potatoes, rolls, sweet tea, and I can't remember what all. While we were eating, our hostess told us the history of the place and it was very interesting. I toured the Jack Daniels Distillery on another occassion but not this time. While we were there, one of the men in our party picked up a brochure on the distillery and it tells how Jack Daniels died. I thought it was interesting and somewhat funny and I thought I would pass it along to youall. He forgot the combination of his safe, so he kicked it in frustration--resulting in gangrene of the foot. After breaking his foot, gangrene set in causing his leg to be amputated. This, however, failed to stop the progression. He died shortly after.

I enjoyed your discusiio, Kathy. Sounds like a fun time , good food & time w/good friends. Sweet tea sounds alot better than whiskey to me.lol. Old Jack must have had a bad temper to do something stupid like that.

I believe he must have had a bad temper, too, lol! I would much rather have sweet tea than whiskey anytime, too, so I agree with you there. I hope you have a Happy New Year. Kathy.

Your last response to this discussion never did show up in my email. I just happened to be reading this discussion tonight and thought I would say it would have been nice if all of us mylotters could have gotten together to see the new year in. I just wonder why sometimes the responses and comments don't show up in our email? Kathy.

I went through the Distillery in the late '70s. Daddy was on the real estate commission and they had a convention in Huntsville, Alabama, which is not too far from Lynchburg. My parents and I weren't drinkers but it was part of the package deal to tour the Distillery. It was pretty interesting, though. Kathy.

That is an interesting story about Jack Daniels. He must have been kicking that safe pretty hard for gangrene to set in. What a way to die. The Mary Bobo's place sounds like a wonderful experience. Thanks for sharing your story.
