What do you think about zoos? Should they be banned?

As a kid I loved going to zoos. I've always been fascinated by animals, especially those that I don't normally see around. But as I grew up, I've realized that the rights of these animals are somehow being violated, as they are supposed to be in the wild roaming free and maintaining the balance of nature. Animals in captivity bring little kids as well as grown-ups joy, but if you were in their shoes, you'd probably wish you weren't caged and surrounded by curious people. What do you think?

Right, regulation is the key. Zoos should breed a lot of animals to prevent future extinction. :D

I Think There Should be a zoo that is a open space in the wild were people can go and drive in a car and look at the animals Natural environment with the animals roaming free without being stuck in a cage or a small Space for the animal That is what i think should happen to zoos =/

Yeah, I've seen zoos like that. Here in the Philippines, we have this zoo where the tigers are not caged. The visitors ride a special kind of jeep where they won't be harmed once these big cats come near them. I've actually experienced that when I was in high school, as part of our field trip. :D There are a lot of other zoos where most of the animals roam freely. Manila Zoo had once been very awful, it had been very dirty and it looked like it wasn't maintained at all. The animals were very few and they looked unhappy, too. It had been very lifeless back then. But I think the zoo now is doing very well.

Hi mjcookie, Zoos aren't all bad. In this world, it can be difficult for wild animals to survive too. So while it is true that these animals are in captivity (usually steps are taken to recreate their natural habitats within the zoos for them), they are also protected and prevented from going extinct - which is the case faced by more and more species of animals. Cheers!

well yes and no, the zoo's I have been to see have been very profesionally run, and only take it animals that would die or have been injured in the wild. they have huge compounds set up to be as near to their habitat as possible. I think animals should be kept in the wild but some of the zoo's are actually doing the animals a service if they would normally be killed in the wild or have been injured and nursed back to health then I support zoo's 100%. Also some of the zoo's have breeding programmes in place for endangered animals and if it weren't for the zoo the animals would prob be extinct by now. The zoo that we go to have zebra's and tigers which are then breed and some are released into the wild in different countries around the world and some are kept to carry on the breeding programmes to help to keep these animals on the planet.

Those are great zoos, and it's the breeding that makes it even more acceptable. They should do more of that. I hope all zoos are like that, because some are really terrible they don't even regularly clean the cages.

Zoos are for education and awareness so it shouldn't be banned. Just imagine a world withoutt zoos. Can we just care for pictures? We should have a look on them on how precious they are. Zoos are interesting in many ways especially for children. I think most of the activist grew up going to zoos that is why they got aware of the importance of animals especially the endangered species.

I think not all the zoos should be banned, just those with the enough facilities and giving the mayor happiness to the resident animals!

You're forgetting all the good that zoos do. They protect endangered animals, rescue exotic pets that are mistreated, and educate citizens on animals and ecology. They also do important studies on animals to help them. I think if I were an animal a zoo would probably be a pretty sweet deal.

Okay. You're right. :) Zoos educate people, especially kids. Circuses I think are the really cruel ones. Most of them have always had a bad reputation regarding the way they treat the elephants, monkeys, and other animal performers just to make them obey.

it really depends on the zoo and on the individual types of animal. some animals naturally only have small territories, so as long as they have the space they need, and have ways to express their natural behaviour, so room to hide, move around, play etc, and obviously the food, water and mental stimulation they need, then I think it can be okay. a lot of zoos are involved in preservation and breeding programmes, which help to maintain endangered species. added to that, they have ongoing care against illnesses and injuries, and a reliable source of food that they would never have in the wild. it also educates people about the necessity of protecting wildlife and maintaining habitats. so it's a tough one. there's some really awful zoos out there that don't provide enough mental stimulation for the animals, or enough space, but when they do, the animals can have a long, healthy and happy life. I don't think they should be banned, but they should be very very strictly regulated to ensure that the animals are looked after both physically and mentally. and some species should not be kept in captivity because they cannot be adequately provided with an environment appropriate to them. like Polar bears. you never see a polar bear in captivity that doesn't show behavioural problems from boredom.

Great response. Good to know. Thank you for that. I've sometimes worried about the animals' welfare inside zoos, and your response gave me some enlightenment. I hope these zoos continue taking very good care of their animals. Happy holidays. :D

So I guess that most are in favor of having zoos, and I guess that would be alright, but as long as they are regulated, and inspected, for any animal abuse !

I lik zoos I do think some of them can be a bit unfair to the animals but most of them really care about the animals and dont keep them completely in a cage. Some even breed endangered species and then let them back out into the wild to try to preserve their life and species.

I hope all zoos are like that. I hope zookeepers are not like those trainers of circus animals who have reportedly abused elephants and other animal performers. :(

Hi mjcookie I dont think they should be banned, zoo gives animals a safe place to be, and sometimes its neccesary if a specific animal is in danger of extinction. You cant compare humans with animals its just not the same.

animals have souls. I have absolutely no doubt of that.

I dont know your beliefs but humans are different than animals because God made us on His image(meaning we have a soul). Its true that in biological terms we are animals, but because of the above reason i said humans cant be compare with animals. I really didnt want to bring this up as it doesnt belong to this discussion per se, but anyway.

Humans are animals by biological definition. But I do see what you're saying.

I dont think they should be banned coz some animals aren't safe in the Jungles---the weakest one loose its live to the strongest hope you must have seen many such incidents in Animal planet or Discovery channel a lion or an tiger hunting a Deer and tears a part for its meal and the hunting is on a rise for the animal skin. If that continues our coming generation doesnt even believe that some animal called existed.you got to show them some pictures You might come up with another option where we can place the weeker animals at one place and the other at another zone----the rise in the temparatures and global warming wouldnt allow them to live their own lives they cant get proper food(the carnivorous animals cannot eat plants)and cutting down of the trees in forests is on a rise which does no good to us and animals. So the better option is to place them in Zoo so they get their food in time properly and we can provide them with their mates so they give birth and dont get extinct in some deserted areas.great day.

okies then answer to this one-----what makes you to send all the culprits, serial killers to a jail they are humans too like us what makes you to be qualified to live in happily in your house and why they should suffer in the jails.why dont you let them free thinking it to be the nature call?

Humans are different from animals in such a way that we have minds and conscience and we can determine which is right from wrong. A tiger wrestling with and almost killing an elephant is a horrible scene, but it's perfectly understandable, because they are ANIMALS, and they act based on instincts. A man murdering a neighbor is a totally different story.

But the wild is where they're really supposed to be. And regarding that "weakest link" you're talking about, it is called "survival of the fittest" where animals fight for their life to survive and remain strong. That's how they're supposed to live, too. It's nature's work, at least it's not some illegal human activity that kills them, but their fellow animals.

I think that as long as the animals are swapped from time to time and they treat the animals as they're supposed to then it shouldn't be an issue at all. Woot! I don't agree with holding animals for a long period of time without good and proper justification.
