How To Kill Time In The Office

I work as a network administrator in our company and there are days when there is really no work to be done. The only time I get to be productive in the office is when there's a problem in the network or when I need to troubleshoot a computer. What else is there to do so I can look busy and my boss won't suspect that I'm being lazy in the office? Mylot is one thing, but I can't be typing a lot since pounding on the keyboard is not really in my job description. What else is there to do to kill time in the office?

Is it okay if you turn on the music? Listening to music can make you forget the time. If not, you can do some cleaning in your office. Dust dirty surfaces, sort and organize documents, you can put labels on it for easy retrieval of files.

Great ideas maria. that is what i used to do when i worked in an office. if things were slow, I labeled and organized anything i could find, my desk, my files, our storage supply room. etc. I even made fancy labels with nice fonts and clipart, because it uses more time! I would design new forms and letterhead even though it wasn't needed, boss's are always open to new suggestions and improvements! And listening to music def. makes the day go faster. online research for your job is also a good idea someone else mentioned.

Hi. We are not allowed to use the internet in the laboratory before, how I wish I can be online in those days lol. Yes, I also find myself being creative with doing labels, its fun and time killing.

You can buy or borrow some books about your job and read them to pass the time even if your boss discover you I think he wouldn't suspect. Also you can have a walk around your work place and pretend to check the network. Everything goes well for you.

Pounding on the keyboard!!!LOL!!! I know what you mean coz I do the same and sometimes the pounding can be so loud and furious that my colleagues actually turn and look at me in wonder and then I have to control myself LOL Surfing the net can be another option…in fact I’ve come to know about so many things thru the net. Religion is one of my favourite sections here and whenever I come across any new things on religion in mylot, I look it up in the net. For example, I came across so many discussions on Judaism, Christianity and Islam here in mylot and I looked them up on the net…similarly, there are other topics here about which I don’t know…a particular fruit or a particular language or a particular food …mylot is a global forum and people have so much to say about things I don’t know, so I surf the net and spend my time. Other than that, you can read online books or read about some other things which might interest you personally.

Hi nocturn, That's great - that you have lot of time and no work to do .. and we just struggle to get time ...lucky :) You can use your time for good may be studing someting or do some resarch or play game as you can get access. or help your Boss (if its possible) or you can talk to subordinates. And think of new topics to start on Mylot and write it because we tend to forget. Any way do you a vacancy in your company so that we both can kill time together.. jokeing

keep participating on mylot. when youre get caught, just pretend like you are repairing the keyboard. im sure its still part of your job. but the best thing to do is always try to update your knowledge that is related to your work description. in doing that, youll be impressing your superior should he/she have queries. happy new year nocturn98

Back when I was doing a similar job as what you have, I would just do my usual things online since they aren't particular with what I do online. I would check out sites, read online magazines or even just to check and email friends who are online. Again, it really depends on the work environment you have in your office. Nowadays since Facebook became a hit, owners of companies made it a point to have their employees blocked from going to online sites.

Well, Nocturn98, that is a tough one, especially if you are not expected to be "pounding on the keyboard." Here are a few suggestions: 1. Do some job-related research. 2. Prepare/Update your checklists so that you have your do's & dont's list at hand. 3. Plan blogs - especially if it's job-related; you'll have pleanty of firsthand experiences for ideas. 4. Target 10 or 15 myLot responses per day...that number is one you can easily manage. 5. Plan your weekly dinners/meals. 6. Volunteer for some other tasks you can take up in the office - it will show that you are a self-starter and keep you busy. I hope this helps...

Are you allow to take your free time while there is not network problem to be fixed to read some troubleshooting guidelines, or learn some extra programming to get savvy with varieties of network problems you might never encountered before. That can be productive, and you won't just wasted your time sitting around, or get suspected by your supervisor. Just one suggestion, would they approve you to do that?
