all i can't say but most of the mylotters are saying that avg is best one. i will try avg first. it consumes less space in computer and also doesn't affect the speed of the processor. others do affect the speed of processor little bit. i will try avg by removing quick heal from my system. it has made my system slow little bit.

AVG used to be a good one. But AVG Free Antivirus is not really helpful to your PC. I'd recommend Microsoft Security essentials if you have Windows 7.

Hi shambhukumar, Perhaps you can try the free version of AVG from Grisoft. Personally, I have found it to be the best among free anti-virus software offerings. You can check out the link here http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage . PS.: I suggest you install just ONE anti-virus software. In this respect, more is not necessarily better. More than one anti-virus programs installed might crash your computer and it is something I have experienced for myself. Cheers!

I have an antivir and avast in my laptop. Avast strains out many kinds of worms that others can't detect while antivir has the most effective guard against virus. When I started using both, I thought that it would slow down my laptop but only little memory were used and starting that day, I haven't experienced any serious infection :D

IF you have installed more than one anti virus programs in a computer, something should be done. You keep only ONE Real time/on access scan. Other wise both program will compete to access the same file, and end up in conflicts and errors and it will reduce the speed of your computer. You can make a weekly full system scan with the other anti virus installed in your PC after temporarily stopping the real time scan of the main anti-virus, This will make your computer more safer. Peace.

There is none anti virus is the best, anti-virus except for the most update, so this was the best. Why ?Had never in its story, medication appeared earlier than the disease, as well as with virus and anti-virus. So in my opinion, all good anti-virus if it is up to date, even its free. But as a suggestion, you can try Avira, its was light and free updates. AVG was ok, but its was more severe and more memory consuming.Website : AVG - http://free.avg.com and Avira - http://www.free-av.com. May help.

Indeed, I think it is very important to keep your virus definitions up to date. For me, it is the very first thing I do when I boot up my computer - update the virus definitions for my anti-virus software.

we should always update our antivirus. it keeps the antivirus informed about the probable virus attack on your computer. it makes antivirus software informed and updated. so, that it can protect your computer from any sort of attack.

in today's world each and every thing changes very fast. so the definition of the virus is also changing very fast. our antivirus need to get information about those definition of the new virus. so, that it can fight with that virus. if the definition of the new virus is not known to the antivirus the how would they fight with the virus attack. In an update of anti virus the definition and how to cumbersome the virus problem is told. so, we must update our antivirus per day or when ever update is showing.

Hm... avast and avira are the best in the freeware area, i'd stay away from avg, and unlike a previous poster i never thought to have those two work together. I don't recommend to anyone to have more then one antivirus solution active at a time. Even if you have enough ram and processor having several antivirs around can crush your operating sistem. But I want to tell all those who were unaware, and especially to those of you that are avast fans, that avast is cooking something really big, called avast 5, and they also came with an internet security suite. Unfortunently these 2 products, even so they look great, and work fine for many if not most computers, are still at a beta state. You can have a sneak peak of how the new antivir looks and feels here, if you feel like testing it, it is quite a ride... http://download805.avast.com/files/beta/5.0.314/setup_av_free.exe If you are willing to give it a try, I recommend gettting it, and letting it update while it is installing. Also their server could be down at times, due to the high demand from time to time. And do remember it is not a final product yet, wich means may have some bugs, and is not recommended as a default antivir even so it does a very decent job, for most people testing it out.

hi shambhu, Let me specify the free anti viruses I prefer in the order of my preference. 1. Avira AntiVir Personal edition : Very less load to PC, classic look, good performance, Auto update is not so friendly but not bad. Free Download from http://www.freeav.com/ 2. Avast Home edition: Very cute and simple one, good performance, Free download from http://www.avast.com/ You have register freely to get activation key within a period. {I would like to put NOD32, KasperSky and bit defender Here, Very good anti viruses, But they are not free, but one month free trial can be downloaded} 3. AVG: free but worst I guess. 4. Panda Cloud :http://www.cloudantivirus.com/en/ ^If you have 24 hours internet, then it works better, it's detection is based on intelligent file collection and scanning via internet, if no internet only cached threat list will be checked. 5. Microsoft Security Essentials : http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ One of the best free anti malware is 'Malware Bytes', which remove unwanted peeping and annoying programs. can be freely downloaded from http://www.malwarebytes.org/ See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_antivirus_software

Avira is the best free anti virus program and you can download it for free. The only trouble it gives is it sometimes pops up a message to upgrade to a professional paid service. But the free service is quite good. AVG is not giving the free edition now.

AVG is good. You want to make sure you get a free spyware, though, from CNET, that's the only drawback, for me, with AVG. CNET has some good downloads for utilities for your computer.

I think avira and avast are both good. By using avast, you can also register free for one year. They give registration key and fill it to antivirus and keep up to date. Avira is also good for quick actions. Thank you.

Afer one year you will have to buy the virus. and most of the time they say register it and register it. it irritates people too much. That was the reason that i had to remove it. it used to display message every minute on screen. it disturbed us a lot in watching movie. so i have removed it. i hope it would be useful for others happy mylotting

I have tried couple of antivirus softwares and I find AVG really very nice. Some trojans which were undetected by other antivirus programs were detected by AVG. And I am using AVG without any problems of trojans, viruses etc. There free version is also very strong and offers good security. You can download it from official AVG site or download.com or any other site. I suggest you to download from official AVG site. Happy Mylotting!

I'm using AVG free eddiion. So far that's proven to do quite well. Though I've only had it a few days. Took me a while to find a decent download page that wouldn't constantly redirect me. My friend recommended it for me when she asked me what I was running. And it seems to not be effecting the performance of my llaptop too greatly.

Avast is the best anti-virus I know of it just happens to be free. You can get it at : http://www.avast.com/ I use it and when I install an operating system on a computer for the first time this is the first software program I install. I would also recommend using mozilla firefox or Netscape Navigator instead of Internet Explorer because Internet Explorer is the easiest exploited browser of all for these viruses and mal-ware.

So far, the best free antivirus I've encountered is Avast. You can register it free for home/personal use, and they'll send you a license code valid for 1 year. Apart from being free, Avast also has far more sophisticated virus detection capabilities than most free antivirus such as AVG (I've used AVG and it doesn't detect certain worms). Also, Avast can detect harmful rootkits.

Try using avira antiVir. they offer a free version of their anti virus with I think a little less functions than the for sale one. You just have to be patient about a window popping up once a day showing a picture and urging you to buy the paid version. It's a very good anti virus because it prompts you as fast as possible if there are any threats in your computer and gives you choices on how to act accordingly. Though if you didn't see the warning, after 30 seconds the program will delete the virus. The update of the free version is once a week but you can adjust when it will auto update. Scanning for viruses will take a lot out of your computer so be sure not to do many things while scanning.

i am glad that you got avg. and as your fellow mylotter said it have to be updated from time to time. avg updates itself every time you go on the internet. make sure your automatic updates are on, otherwise it will not update at all. it will not bother you while you are busy on the net or whatever you are doing on your computer. hope that was helpfull.
