...Hi Sharlahodges, I would guess the thrill of traveling to New York would take away any anxiety that you may have had in flying for the first time. I was trying to remember my first visit to New York City. I think it was by train as we were quite close in Philadelphia. That was fun as well for me. My first plane ride scared me to pieces, the armrests were squeezed as hard as I could. The plane ride was fine, not any turbulence that I remember, but mentally I was a wreck. Later on, my trips were much better for me, I adjusted as most of us do. Thank you so much for sharing. Have a Happy New Year.

My first plane trip was from Harwich in England to den Haag in Holland. In those days there were planes that took two or three cars across the Channel. They were little more than tin boxes with a movable partition between the car bay at the front and the passenger seating at the rear. The seats were very much like the cane furniture that we put in our conservatories or on the patio today.
My friend and I had embarked on a cycling holiday in Holland and we were flying with our tandem. I hate to think what the price of taking a car on such a flight would have been - far more, I imagine, than taking it on a car ferry - a bicycle or tandem, however, was light enough and slid down alongside the cars, so was only 7 shillings and sixpence (£0.37 or about $0.50 in today's money).
I had no fear, that I recall. Only excitement and a sense of magical wonder that this creaking and swaying heavy (and draughty) tin box could possibly lift us into the air. There was just a minute of the roar of the engines and bumpy race down the runway before everything became (relatively) smooth and I was looking down on the fantastic tracery of the coastal marshes. I don't remember anything of the rest of the flight, though we must have landed, disembarked, had an encounter with customs, consulted our maps and found the way out. The next memory I have is of cycling along the Dutch cycling paths on our way to Leiden. There we were, well on our way in another country less than two hours after leaving England!
I have flown only a few times since then. Once a friend offered me a joy ride in a Piper Cub (two seater high wing monoplane). I had the same excitement of seeing the landscape from above and that felt very much like being in a small boat in a three-dimensional ocean. The third and last time I flew was in a proper plane from London to LA (and back). I suppose that makes five trips in all, with the return trips. I find flying exciting and exhilarating (though the long flights to the US were mostly just boring).

...Hi there owlwings, Your comment reads like a movie script or something. It is such an interesting detailed account of a very exciting time for you and your friend. You can almost feel the breeze as you ride on your two seater bike. You had a lot of faith, you and your friend, to ride in this plane with its movable parts like joints in places. The amount paid for the trip was reasonable sounding. I do declare, your comment could be a part of the movie "The Flying Machine" or something. I really appreciate you sharing such a great, very vivid description of a very nice time in your life. I enjoyed going with you on this trip, thanks for taking us along. Take care and have a Happy New Year.

I was young, just in my teens I think so there was not the same fear of crashing or terrorists as there is now. It was only an intestate flight of an hour and I was too young to be frightened as well...it was more an exciting thing to be doing. I worry whenever of my family fly these days because they are generally going overseas...that's a worry for me.

....Hi MsTickle, Thanks for your response, I am sorry I took so very long to get back to you. I think when we are young we are prone to take a lot of things in easy stride because we are not concerned about danger. That is a good thing in a way, because we need to take sone risks. Some of the things I did when I was younger, I would probably never have done if I had been older. I very well understand about your concern now. I really think we need to stop with the increase in technology to find things that people might use to blow planes up, and start to do things the way Israel does for their passengers, extensive long interviews, takes time, but if you show any signs of stress or start to sweat as they question you, they do not let you on the plane. May 2010 be good to you.
Take care.

I took my first plane ride when I was fourteen years old. I went with my mom on a plane from London to Athens. I was so excited and liked seeing the landscape below when the plane went up before it entered the cloud. I got terrible ear plane when the plane began descending. I felt nervous landing. On the return journey there was a delay and lots of waiting on the floor at Athens airport. I enjoyed the flight home but again before landing got severe ear pain.
I can say that ten years later a friend gave me a pair of ear planes for my flight from London to Mombasa. So I went all the way to Kenya on the plane and didn't get any ear pain at all. Coming back from the trip I got the most superb views of the pyramids in Egypt.

...Hi there maximax, Happy 2010 to you and your family. You started young to enter the skies, how interesting. Flying in a plane is fascinating, I am still in wonder at how they stay up and move through the air. The ear problem affects a lot of travelers, I think I learned early on to chew gum or mimic chewing to lessen the effect. What neat trips you have taken, Africa and the pyramids, especially wonderful. Thank you for sharing. Take care.

...Hi yugasini, Again you and I, as one other poster did, rode on this little plane with a few seats, and you feel like you might upchuck all over the place.
It was the worst plane ride of my natural life, and I hope that I never ever have to ride on another small plane like that the rest of my life. I can totally relate to you and your wife, I was shaking all around, the plane was going up and down. When we landed I thought I would never get on another plane in my life. Time passed and I kept flying eventually. Thanks for your comment. Take care.

My first plane trip was about 5 or 6 years ago. A friend went with me and she booked the trip on priceline. She wasnt able to see the details of the trip until after she purchased it since she named her own price...anyway...thinking that I would be flying for the first time on a "normal" plane I was scared but excited. While waiting at the airport we saw a tiny plane pull up to our gate and we both freaked out!!!! It was one of those little 50 seaters! The worst part was having to fly over the Sierra Nevadas (going to Reno). When the turblulence hit I literally thought I was going to die, and it just wouldn't stop. I had no idea it could get that bad and being on the tiny plane only made it worse. I swore I wasn't flying home in the same size plane but we had to. It wasn't too bad on the way home but still freaked me out. Now I make sure the planes I'm flying on are BIG!!!! No more of those puddle jumpers for me!!!!

...Hi renee22093, Well I did the same as you, but it was many years after I had rode on larger airplanes. I was traveling to Nassau from Florida. Got off the plane in Florida, thinking we would be getting on the same sized plane. Walking off to the plane, and there it was, this little tiny 30 seat plane not even a 50 seater plane like the one you took. It was the worst plane trip I had ever taken, you could smell fumes inside the plane, it was shaking, dropping in altitude. Making you feel like a dog, finally we landed. I don't think I ever rode on a small plane again. Worst ride in the air in my life. Thanks for sharing, we had a similiar experience. Take care. Happy New Year!
