Yesterday was wonderful. The third son's GF came with him from the U.K. for vacation. Her first visit to Caribbean although she has travelled widely. So we had a welcoming family lunch/dinner for her to meet $2's son's family. There were about 14 of us including children and we cooked up a storm.
My anxieties were allayed as the GF so fitted in with my family although she did look a little surprised at how loud and vocal we are. But she was given a very warm welcome. Then a few friends of my children's drifted in and I suppose we got up to about 18 - 20 people.
So we decided to have a Karaoke contest using the Wii, of American Idol. I went first to break the ice and then it became so funny.
It finally got down to my 9 year old GD and myself as the final contestants. I heard her asking her mother if she should let me win! So I told her that no way could she beat me as I was singing the 'YMCA' as my final song. She chose 'Bad girls don't cry' or 'Good girls don't cry'. Cannot remember exactly.
Even though the battle lines were drawn and I got the crowd support singing the chorus, she still won.
However, they all kindly agreed that I danced better than Joelle as I have a much bigger b*m. The Lithuanian GF was looking quite bemused at the contest between my GD and me. She asked if it was the custom out here for GM's and GD's to enter contests together.

Sounds like a wonderful time, cynthi. I wish i did have a big family like that. Y'all seem to always have such a good time together, have to admit i'm envious. My family never did things like that together. Glad the gf fit right in. Know u were pleased about tht. I would have loved to have seen the contest. That was cute of joelle to ask if she should let u win.

Well, I only remember going somewhere once with my parents - we never did anything like that at all. My father played cards occasionally with us and that was it. I try to make good memories with my family - and they made videos too! I didn't mind at all that my large b*m has been videoed and that it will give them all laughs for years to come.

Oh I wouldn't call them stupid things! These are things that families have fun doing together. I have tried to get my family to do sing a longs but without success. My daughter would love to do karaoke with the family. But, she is the best singer in our family so she would win hands down!

Yes, I think that she would.
None of us can sing (except the GD who is very musical: we don't know where it comes from!) but it good to be funny together and have laughs and create good memories during this awful recession. Blessings

No, I think sometimes that I am a boring old lady but I like to create happy memories for my children and Grands. I did not have a happy childhood at all and so I wanted my children to have a better one than I did. Oh, they did video it and it will give them all happy memories when I am long gone! Thank you dear friend.

That sounds like a lot of fun to me and I bet the new GF is so pleased she met you guys because you all sound like a bunch of fun! My family would never consider karaoke, my sister and I would probably be the only ones making decent effort which is usually us after a few margaritas! My mum and dad are way too stuffy and boring. My in-laws would be right in there I think...Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

Make sure you tell her you like her. When I was meeting my husband's family I felt so overwhelmed and self conscious and when his mum commented that she was glad he found me, it made all the difference! Happy New Year!

Yes, she has so loosened up since she arrived a few days ago. I really like her as she just automatically helps in the house etc. Plus, she has very good qualities so I hope that this is the one for him. Happy New Year to you and your family too

Hi Celebrate life: yes i find it really interesting too that a family can be reunited to play a karaoke contest. My brother love karaokes but I think here in my family we could not do it because I don't sing and I would simply not take the risk that people would make fun of me, thanks! Thanks for your answer celebrate life. Hope you are having a nice day. Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays. Take Care.

'I have no family here except for my adult son as I have been
widowed since 1991. I have a lot of cousins in other states
though but not really very close. When my hubby was alive we
did silly things too.I once got him a joke present of this giant
sunglasses. He wore the things all day on Christmas day..We
would all get together and sing carols acapello, sounded off'key but we had a great time anyway. no piano and I always wanted one.oh well you cannot have everything.Have a very wonderful
New Year for you and yours and hugs from hatley.

It sounds like your husband was a fun man. Mine was too and it is so good to have wonderful memories. I have been widowed for nine years and am only accepting it these past few years. Many blessings to you and your son in the New Year.

And I suppose now that we have a wii, I'm going to have to go get the silly microphone and all that other stuff too.
Nope, our family tends to sit around and make sarcastic comments to stupid movies more than sing and dance...

I now know I want that game because of the fun you all had. I am glad that you had a great day! Sounds like a great family get together. We were a bit more quiet as well we'd have surely been told to hush if we were loud!
I haven't done anything stupid like that with family in awhile but as I believe I've told you, my side doesn't do anything anymore, atleast my mom's side. My dad's I am not sure about as I am just starting to talk to them again, and as far as my husband's two sides we are the youngest out of the bunch that gets together!

That was fun! You and your GD!! Wow!!! My younger sis' BF also came home with her for Christmas and we gave him a very warm welcome, too. Even though most of us never met him, but the moment my sis told us that he would be joining us, hubby and I thought of getting him a Christmas gift and so did my other sisters. He was kind of surprise. Anyway, my family is like yours. We are very loud and love to sing ha ha... My eldest brother is a guitarist and he played the guitar and we all sang out Christmas songs and other songs on Christmas Eve. It was fun and entertaining. He said that it's amazing that everyone is talented in the family he he he...
On Christmas Day, after dinner, some of us played cards, the rest played darts and rummy. The background was songs from the Karaoke and everybody just sang along like it was nobody's business.

Hi cynthiann: I have to say that in my family we don't do these things but I don't find it anything stupid on it. Actually that's an interesting way to have a great time with your family members. Sometimes we play monopoly or Scrabble but that's all. Lol. XD. By the way, congratulations for being one of the final contestants and for your dancing moves that make you proud. Thanks for sharing with us your experience. Hope you are having a nice day. Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays. Take Care.

I have been doing stupid things with my family for a long time. We have contest on who can run to the car faster. We have contest over the littlest things. Here is a stupid thing that my oldest son reminded me of the other day. I used to make pilllsbury waffles for him every morning when he was little. Know if any one is aware the waffles have the pillsbury dough boy stamped into the waffle. After putting syrup on the waffle, I would cut the waffles by cutting the legs off the pillsbury dough boy and say ahhh my legs or ahhh my arms. He used to get a great kick out of this. Well my six year old is liking waffles but I can not find the frozen waffles from pillsbury here in nc, so I can not share this tradition with him. But my oldest says that he doesn't look at a waffle and here - ahhh my legs or ahh my eyes and so on. We joked about how someday when he gets married he is going to make waffles and say ahhh my legs or ahh my stomach and his wife is going to wonder what the h.e double hockey sticks is going on.

Now that sounds like it was absolute fun. Sounds like a great way to be welcomed into a family as well. I hate the stiff formal manner in which these meetings are sometimes done.
My family gets up to all sorts of madness as well and its just great fun. Two weeks ago my boyfriend surprised the living lights out of me by turning up at my house. He was meeting my family for the first time and somehow he and my sisters especially planned the visit without my knowledge.
I found out that even my mother was in on it and trust me Cynthie, at the end of it when everything became clear to me I felt really really played but it was great. Every time I think about it I just have to laugh.
I bet your son's girlfriend is still laughing at the antics you guys got up to.lol

Our family has always done a lot of stupid things together. I've actually never played any of the karaoke games for Wii, but I do have a very nice karaoke machine in our house and my daughter and I will sing together all the time. Our family has just always been like that. I think that it is great to hear that you are able to have a good time with your family. In my honest opinion, it is very important to be able to have a good time with your family.
