Does your place/country practice firecrackers or fireworks at New Year?

I started a discussion about my pet freaking out every New Year because of the loud noises made by firecrackers. I thought that the tradition is only present in most Asian countries, but with your responses I've found out that it isn't. The Philippines is one of those countries where this tradition is done yearly, as it is believed to scare away bad spirits so the year would start out right. Does your country follow the same thing? If not, what are your country's traditions during New Year, if any?

I think that almost all country in the world practice it. People are usually gathered in town square or beach or other spacious palces to have n enjoy the new year party. it's a universal tradition.

Oh really? Thanks for the info. I really thought it was exclusive for some countries only.

Usually we have fireworks on 5th November for Guy Fawkes night. Many people like to have fireworks on New Year's Eve. There were lots of loud fireworks and the bangs upset my two dogs this New Year's Eve. It is interesting to find of the tradition in the Philippines. I think that my home country fireworks are simply for enjoyment. Scaring off the bad spirits is a great idea. Happy New Year 2010.

I live in the United States and it depends where you live in the US.I live near New York City.they drop the ball down at Times Square every year,it's the same thing. They don't use fire works there. The time I hear alot of fire works is the 4th of July celebration, and my dog don't like it.He barks at the noise.I find it bothersome to me.I'm not sure if any other areas here in the US use fireworks to celebrate the New Year.
