More than two cats. See you in court then.

I didn't know whether to put this in cats of Greek lifestyle. Anyway I heard about a bizarre law today which I thought would amuse. An friend of mine has just received a courts summon as some local busy body has reported him for having more than two cats. Who knew this law even existed to report someone for breaching it is odd in itself but the fact is this has happened. Many people have a few cats around the place and if they belong to someone they aren't a nusiance. The very idea that such a law exists, that someone called the police about it, and that this chap now has to go to court over it is hilarious. Of course the case will drag out so long that by the time it is settled the cats will probably be grandparents. So what do you think of this or are there strange laws you know about pertaining to the keeping of pets?

well, Austin has a law against more than 4 dogs, unless you are a breeder - so far there's no limit to the number of cats...

that'd be cool... Zoe is a guard dog, pity the fool that jumps into the back yard when she's there! One cable guy just barely made it back over the fence before she got him!

Hi Elic, dogs are a barking nuisance most of the time, but over here they aren't kept as pets but work animals. Those who have cats though tend to have quite a few and this is some ancient law which is being dug up just to get someone in trouble by the sounds of it. If they were taking it seriously there'd be half the village in court soon. It could be amusing if a full village feud breaks out.

Is that your dog? Actually I'm terrified of dogs but they do keep the guard dogs chained up out here. But if one of them gets a howling fit on you can hear it for miles as otherwise it is so quiet and the barking just travels. I think they use them to guard things like chickens though mainly.

my town has a law like this.i think it's 6 cats,2 dogs. it's supposed to keep down "hoarding"..but most people i know don't report over the number unless somebody's trying to be an a**hole to someone else. if my neighbors ever reported me,EVERYTHING in their yard better be up to code.

Hi scarlet, well that's what it's all about, the reporting. There must be hundreds of people round here breaking that law and I can't wait to see which ancient one gets dragged up in the revenge reporting. The only problem being there are two suspects.

In our city there are also law that tell you how many pets you can keep....also leash laws etc as here even cats are supposed to be on leashes.....for both the protection of other people and the cat....and you know I hardly ever see a cat running loose around here.....I don't think the law is strange....there have been instances where people have horded pets.....I have a friend who had 11 cats...I think she is down to 9 now...last time I talked to her...that's alot of cats.

Hi jillhill, I can understand having laws in cities where pets are kept indoors but down in the fishing village where they live outside and are too fat and hot to make a nuisance of themselves if owned by someone it all seems a bit silly, especially as those who do have cats have a lot of them. It's the cats that don't belong to anyone who run round making a nuisance and ending up splattered on the roads.

Nothing quite so odd here, but we are only allowed two dogs per property unless we farm or breed, and they cost a bloody fortune to register. Lash

I can understand with dogs as they can make such a noise and be such a menance if they get loose or off a leash, if they are just wandering round being frightening I think they should go to people who will keep them out of the publics way. I know very few people keep them as pets here as they are for guarding things like chickens mostly.

Oh that is one crazy law. I know of one law here whihc is in a way related to pets. If a person hangs a card on his gate saying that he has got dogs in his home and if this dogs bites someone, this unfortunate person cant take the owner of the dog to court!

Hi malpoa, well I think that's a good law. I think everyone should be made to hang up a card saying they have a dog on the premises. The avatar has a big sign on his gate saying beware of the dog so I refused to go through the gate until he said he didn't really have one, just didn't want everyone knowing that the cats were protecting the chickens.

Only I read this news on paper today about neighbours taking this person to court for having a lot of dogs as pets. the neighbours say that he has more than 30 or so breeds and it is polluting the environment with sound and bad odour! The judge ordered to vacate teh house of dogs!! and also added that it is not fundamental right of a person in India to keep any animals at home as pets!! I dint know that!!! oh avtar is not only cute but also clever!!! I liked 'the cats shielding the chickens' hi hi only last day I got amused at someone's writing which was 'I hung I card around my neck' and I did the same mistake!!! :(( Wish you and H a happy new year.

What? That's strange! If only we can have laws in my country against cats entering people's houses. Yup, like burglars! I dont know how to stop them. I dont really want to hurt them but they keep on stealing food from the kitchen, table and even meat on top of the barbecue grill. Argh, I think there are a lot more issues regarding animals that need to be tend to and not really just about "owning them". I really want an animal court in my country!!! We have 4 of those stray cats around here and they enter our house through windows and the roof top. But I doubt if I ever will get justice! :(

Hi calai, it's a strange law for people who keep cats as those who keep them keep down the number of strays. I suspect one of the holiday home neighbours was feeding a stray on their last visit so now there's a couple of them hanging round nearby. One of them scared the life out of me by wandering in through the French windows. I chased it out and if I hear one outside I turn the hosepipe on as don't want to encourage them in anyway as they could well have been scavenging in the dustbins earlier. I think those who come out here and try to domesticate cats that live wildly and then go back home need a good talking to about not doing it. Cats stealing your food is terrible. I remember in the heat once leaving the car window open whilst I called on someone, and one of the fishermen had just given me a big bag of small fish which were in the car. I got back to the car and found a cat making off with one of my fish. I was not amused.

Wow, Thea.. you have many responses for this. Awesome. I think it's ridiculous too, and I don't see why it can cause to be a problem to have many at one time. So, does your friend has to pay a fine or what? There are lots of stray cats around, and if someone has the kind heart to take care of many, why not. Pity those cats..if everyone is only allowed 2..

Hi Zed, yes it seems if you want a hefty dose of responses then post in cats is the answer. It's only the person who has been reported for breaking the cat law who has to answer to this, and no one has actually been along to take a cat away. But neighbours round here do love taking each other to court over the most nonsensical things.

Los Angeles, where I grew up, allows no more than three cats or three dogs and a combination of 5 total. And yes, my family got reported when I was growing up. Ironically it was at a time when we actually did only have 3 cats, though there had been times when we had more. In my county there is a limit of 4 dogs and 4 cats per lot. You need a breeders permit to own more. And there are limits on other animals also (ie farm animals on residential lots).

Wow thats interesting. I didnt know that. I know some apt bldgs. have rules that you can only have 2 pets. I would not be surprized if we had laws like that here too. Sounds like communisim to me. Maybe because i have 3 cats. The mama and 2 of her kittens. Im not getting rid of any either. They freak out when they somehow get shut into separate rooms. Even though they dont always get along. We are family so screw that law. Id pay the fine and move.

Hi jdyrj, well it appears that many different places have laws on the number of pets one may keep. I've no idea what the rules were under communism for pet keeping but I imagine they were frowned upon as personal rather than as group value. I'm sure no one will care how many cats you keep.

Hi Aunty, what an astute observation. Village busybodies complaining about someone through their cats. As the police here are obliged to follow up every complaint and there isn't really any crime for them to bother with, they spend a lot of their time being called to rubbish like this. I'm sure the chap with the cats is back on the phone already reporting his reporters for something. It just find it fun as no one wants to report me.

Ho thea, I guess I would be up in court if I lived over there. We have five cats but they are all neutered, so we don't have a cat population explosion (as much as I would love one) and two dogs. We have no strange laws here regarding pet ownership that I am aware of, just the obvious ones such as dangerous breeds of dogs must be muzzled in public and such but those laws are just common sense. I did read a very amusing law when I was in Minnesota a few years back and it states It is illegal to walk across the Minnesota-Wisconsin border with a duck on your head.

Well there's a good discussion for you. You can't get much dafter than a law not allowing you to walk round with a duck on your head. It could be a vicious duck which needs keeping away from children. I saw a duck swim up and attack a little girl in the sea this summer, it was evil.

Hi thezone, that is a good law, I'm glad we don't have a similar one or how would the donkeys get home after a hard day in the olive groves. As you already sussed with your busy body comments this has nothing to do with anything to do with cats, but feuding villagers digging out any old law they can report their latest enemy for. I do wish we had a law about dogs hanging around though on their own looking menacing.

I knew there were laws about how many pets you can have. I think every municipality (in the US)is different on the numbers. If you have indoor cats, how would anyone know how many you had? There are laws that dogs have to be on a leash in some areas, but I had never heard of cats before. I tried to put one of my cats on a leash and she went nuts and knocked everything in site over trying to get it off.

Hi cerebellum, I can't get over the idea of you having to keep cats on leashes over there, but I think that dogs should be as they can be a menace. Plenty of people keep cats over here, and if they do its usually more than two, so its just a case of some archaic law being dragged up to bring trouble.
• United States
31 Dec 09
We don't have to keep cats on a leash here, but I was reading some of the responses and it seems some people do. I think the law is good if it would be 8 or 9 cats or some higher number. Some people take in more than they can handle and then let them live in squalid circumstances. On the news you always see people that were cited for mistreating their animals and not cleaning up their feces and not feeding them etc. The same for dogs, but the ones you usually see have a bunch of cats.

I have had a lot of cats in the past. I took great care of all of them as well. There have been cases on tv where this was not the case. There was abuse and neglect to the animals from caregivers. So this is why you have the laws you have. I have not heard of any such law ever. But,I do agree with it. Two cats are enough for anyone to have.

Hi Sharon, Well personally I don't have any cats and there are plenty of ones out here which belong to no one, but the people who keep them keep them on their own property as pets and feed them well. I think the law is pretty strange if they suddenly get landed with kittens.

Hi filfileigh, this is a small country village and those who keep cats as pets are at least keeping the cats off the roads, where they scavenge in bins and risk being run over daily. This is just some silly old law being used as a way of getting back at a neighbour.

Maybe it has to do with where the guy lives? I know some subdivisions have a limit to the number of pets and the kinds of pets you can have. Does the guy have 3 cats or 18? If he has a large number, the person may be concerned for the cats' welfare. Many good intentioned people hoard cats, then can't take care of them or clean up after them, and it creates a health hazard.
@thea09 (18305)

Hi JudiAnn, no it's nothing to do with that as the cats are too old and fat to wander away from the garden area so aren't a health hazard. It's just a way of someone getting one of their neighbours into trouble over here, but if the woman who reported him is who I think she doesn't look after her dogs very well.

i think thats just very sad. it must have been made by someone that hates cats. and why do some people hate cats? i dont understand it. i mean they are a wonderful animal and i think if you hate cats you have to not love animals at all and have no heart. we dont have a law like that in the USA. we do have a law that you must be humane to animals, but its often ignored. we have "rules" in some communities and areas about not allowing your cat to wander. but in lots its just let done even though there are leash laws for your dog not allowed in some places to have your dog out without being tied up or a leash while walking. it seems theres more strict laws on dog owners.

Hi bunnybon, well reading through some of the other responses there are laws in some parts of the US restricting how many animals one may keep, it seems to vary state to state. This apprears here to be some strange old law which has just been dragged out to report on a neighbour and nothing at all to do with cats, as the people who do keep them seem to have quite a few on their properties.

...Hi thea, Does it make any difference if they are inside or outside. You would think thst the lawmakers would be happy that the people would care enough to feed the cats. Sometime as someobe else mentioned, they show up on your doorstep. Suppose more than two are outside on your property and you own two that are inside. Do you get cited for four cats if a nosey busybody calls the police? What gives? This sounds like it would be hard to enforce as well as silly in a way. People over here have ten cats and so on, nobody bothers them unless they abuse the animals and someone reports it. Take it easy.

I live in Ontario Canada and the bylaw here is no more than 4 animals per apt, house. So that includes dogs or cats. I think the law that you have 2 cats and are getting a summons is completely unfair. All across the world cats especially are struck with overpopulation and not enough people to moniter their care or population. It should be made easier to adopt pets not harder because it is already difficult enough as we as pet owners are always faced with the risk of monumental vet bills. (see my discussion on veternary markups) . This is a worldwide animal rights issue not just Greece. Cheers!I wish you luck and hope that you win in court.

Hi lynkshadow, I'm not going to court and anyone can adopt a cat here or take in a stray. Greece isn't big on animal rights, probably as they've had other things to worry about than caring for pets, but cats do oftentimes get treated as pets.
