Would You Still Eat Something Past The Expiration Date?

I've always thought that the expiry date on food items are not really exact. It might be that they put in an earlier date so people like me wont get sick if they eat something past its expiration. I've tried eating a day old expired food before like chocolates, canned goods, chips.. It never made me sick or felt any ill effects.

No I have not but let me explain to you what it is for. Most of the food have an expiration date because it lets you know that it is best eaten before or on the date itself. Some food can be eaten even past the dates but there are some that are advisable to be eaten on or before the date. We just have to remind ourselves on which food we can eat past the expiration date just to be safe.

I do feel that you can eat food which is a day or two older than it's expiration date. I have done that in the past. But then there are medicines or pills which may be risky, if you try taking it after it's expiration date.

Most food can still be eaten past their expiry date. It all depends on how long the food has expired. Some food go up to 6 months. As long as the food does not turn mouldy or stale or have a pungent smell, I believe the food can be eaten. I would not try it though unless the food cost more than a trip to the doctor. LOL.

I might go 3 or 4 days pass the date. I would not go more than that. I think they use the date to give us a time limit on the product. I think it also depends on the product and what it has in it. Have a great New Year.

I do it too. :-) And I've never been sick either! But most of the time, I don't really notice that it's passed the expiration date until I have already eaten it. Of course I don't eat it months after the expiration date, but perhaps a couple a days, depending on the product of course.

Hi Nocturn, Happy new year. i am very conscious about the expiration date especially of food and medicines. i don't want to put our lives at risk for food poison or any bad reaction to expired foods and meds. i used to inform the cashier or even the manager for selling an expired meds and foods. i even thought of suing the distributor for selling such expired goods.

It depends on the item. Milk has to be drank by the expiration date or I use it for cooked pudding, but we are pretty good at drinking milk before the date. Yogurt I will keep for four days past the date. I have a lot of spices that I have used that have been up to one year past expiration date and haven't had any problems. I know in the US manufacturers have to put dates on food items.

I've found that the dates on most foods is a sell by date, not an actual expiration date. I generally ignore those dates after I get the food home. If it looks, smells, and tastes OK, I eat it and have never in my 75 years had any ill effects.

am a no nonsense girl and i try to make my life less complicated. so no is no and yes is yes. okay is okay and expired is expired. it prevents arguments or conflicts. besides when things get bad and the fact that one has eaten an expired food based on the date on the label and not on experience with such dates then i don't want most blame on me...peace .

depends on exactly what it is. Some things have expiration dates, simply because the government requires that they have an expiration date. Companies love this because they can put a date on there, even if it can last for years longer. Thus you throw it out because you think it is out of date, when really you can use it. On the other hand, some things really do not last. Generally if something is bad, you know it. One time I had some chips that had just a tad funny taste to them. I even thought, maybe these are bad. But I thought oh I just bet that's because they are some odd flavored chips. Nope, I got sick. Another time, there was some milk my parents had, which had an odd smell to it. I told everyone I thought the milk had gone bad, but they said they couldn't smell it. According to the expiration date, it was still good. But I refused to have any. The people who did, got sick. There's really only one sure fire way to tell if something is bad, and that's to eat it, and see if you get sick. Short of that, the next best thing is you yourself checking it. If you smell ANYTHING funny, don't eat it. If there is even the smallest of a funny taste, throw the food away. Sometimes something makes you wonder about the food, and that's your mind warning you "hey som sing wong!" Listen to that little voice. That's your warning system going off.

There are soe foods that I will watch the expired date and not eat anymore than 2 days past expiration date and some I will follow the date. I have not gotten sick so far so I will keep doing what I am doing.

depends on how far expired and what it is. dairy stuff is going right in the garbage.i've actually had that expire before the date occasionally.

Yes, I have done so on many occasions without ill effects. I first open the packet and see what it looks like. I will then smell it and if it doesn't smell right, then I won't eat it. - Derek

They are not exact, my friend. Because those expiration dates is only an assumption and not sure when is the date those foods being expired or not good to eat... I don't really sure if those food get us sick if we can eat...

I accidentally drank milk one time without knowing it was expired. I found out really fast that it was. It was a horrible experience because I was pregnant at the time. I couldn't drink milk for years after that!! And I love milk. I don't eat foods past the expiration because it could be very bad for you. I might if it is one day past but beyond that, no way. It could give you illnesses that you didn't even know existed. It isn't worth the chance to me.

Remember that most of those dates aren't an 'eat by' date. If you look on most things like chips or cookies, what it actually says is "best by" - they're basically telling you right up front that you're not going to get the best quality after that date, but it's not saying that it can't be eaten. For many other products, like diary products, it's a sell by date. With those dates, you can usually expect a week or more before you'd actually need to throw the product out.
