What is your local sales tax on your purchases in your state/country?
Here it's 5.1% on anything that isn't deemed "food". They raised it up that extra .1 several years back to build a baseball stadium that's had nothing but problems & on the tax payor's dime no less.

State sales tax in VA is 5% on material goods and 2.5% on grocery. A few years back it was 5% on all items but they decided to lower it on food as it is a necessity. We have no local county tax here except on dinning out as they figured if you can afford to dine out then you can afford the extra taxes.

Yep there's a tax here on eating out as well. And I think there's a luxury tax on cars over such an amount, usually tacked onto luxury imports.

I know in Delaware they have a luxury tax like you are talking about also. They have a 0% sales tax on everyday goods (clothing, food) but a high luxury tax.

Here in Kentucky we are at 6.0% sales tax. That sales tax applies to everything that is not edible. It has been at this rate for as long as I can remember. I understand that sales tax is meant to benefit the state and/or local government, but I really think that it would ultimately be easier if they posted the prices of objects including sales tax at the store instead of adding it in at the end of your bill.

um..i think 7% right now.there's one or two things they don't tax,but considering how broke the state is,i'm expecting them to raise it again.
and to answer the obvious question,my state is too stupid to understand if they can't pay now, raising taxes is going to make it worse.

With state and county taxes, our sales tax is 7%. I hate it when they use taxes to build stuff like stadiums. They say it brings in business and maybe it does but I feel it's an expense that should be absorbed by the teams and not the public.

I am from NH. We do not have sales tax. But do not be deceived our state and property taxes are crazy. We are taxed on meals, not groceries, but like going out to dinner. That tax just went up to 9%. It does confuse me when I go shopping out of state and something is 2.99, I have three dollars and it comes to more. I guess that is something I will not get used to.

The city of St. Louis were I live has a sales tax of 9.241%.
The state of Missouri has a statewide sales tax of 4.225% on the purchase of tangible personal property and enumerated services. A 4% special use tax is applied to the sale of motor vehicles, trailers, boats, and outboard motors.

The county I live in is 7%, but I shop in the next county over, just because it's closer, and that's the county hubby works in, it's 8% there.

You will not believe this one. But in our poor Third World country the tax on food (except flour, cornmeal, tinned milk and flour) is 17.5%. The government has raised it to this figure. The poor can hardly buy food now so malnutrition will increase in the country.
