This is what we here on the island normally say when you are eating and the food goes up the nasal passage.By this time you are coughing like crazy and trying to dislodge it and all they can do is laugh and say "food gone down the wrong throat man " much to my annoyance at times but sometimes even I end up laughing too...after the food has been dislodged. This noramlly happens whn I am eating some food especially rice and one of the grains of rice gets up there.Sometimes happens when I drink soda too. Has food ever gone down the wrong throat for you ,which foods normally does that ,what do you do and are there any saying asscociated with it ?

Hello my friend ronnyb Ji, Beside laughing, I think wate should be offered. Sometimes it turns to be dangerous and may cause life on the spot. It has happened many times with me. So I am serious on this issue. May God bless You and have a great time.

I hate that when it happens we call it going down the wrong hole.It really makes you cough and go red.Sometimes it makes my throat sore as well.It is nothing in particular that makes it happen, just does but not very often thank goodness.

Of course this has definitely happened to me! More times than I can count. One time it was on a Dorito while I was driving on the highway - I remember I literally started choking and had to have my friend SLAP my back (really hard! it hurt! lol) just to get it to go down normally. I don't know if this is midwestern slang, but we say "It musta went down the wrong TUBE" or some variation of that. Not sure why we say TUBE. But it's what they usually say.

It's in our family. My grandmother had the problem, my mother did and so do I. It's not with specific foods - it can be whilst drinking water, having a soup or eating chocolate or even meat. My gran always said it is because we are breathing not right and talk too much - so air gets in the throat at the wrong time and food gets stuck. It doesn't make my colleagues half laugh at work in the canteen when I sit there in tear, coughing and try to talk again....

Yes I think that this problem occurs when you are eating too fast and not breathing properly and talking at the same time .Thank you for your answer

I used to know someone who when that happened to anyone, would say "Cough it up,it'll do for the cat" Pretty disgusting I know but it always made us laugh.

Eating too fast does that to me when it does happen. Also, eating a bit too much at once can cause this problem. Not to mention the angle that I am eating it. Sometimes, when I'm sitting up at a certain position, it tends to lead to coughing fits. So yeah this does happen to me.

It used to happen to me all the time. Food would go or try to go down my air pipe and I would cough. It has been a long ,long time since this has happened to me.

this happens to me when i eat a salad with lots of oil and vinegar. the vinegar goes down quickly and i start choking, as you said down the wrong throat or i say wrong pipe. also if i eat too fast or take my meds too fast this will happen. i have to take my time. slow and easy and think.

Hi, ronnyb. Yes, my food has went down the wrong throat plenty of times before. When my stepmother saw me choking she would say, that my food when down the wrong windpipe. She would always say this to me. It was very annoying. She was right there when I was choking. Food has went down my wrong throat so many of times. Even with drinks it has too. I will just stay still and panic. It feels like I am drowning in my own saliva. It is a very scary situation to be in. This is something that I don't enjoy happening to me at all.

That's my main worry when I take my multi-vitamin pill. It's a huge pill and I can never swallow it on my first try. Usually takes a few attempts before it goes down.
