Gym/Health Clubs - Money makers or Health consious

January 2, 2010 11:09am CST
I would like to know what you think about gyms and health clubs Are they out of make money or do they really care about the health and fitness of their clients? Many do contracts to tie in their members - is this a sign that they are out to make money? And when members try to get of these contracts or cancel their membership many find it difficult. One top clubs in the UK does a kickstart fee which they say you get back if you go three times a week for the first month. If they are concerned about you going why the financial incentive why dont they find non financial incentives? What is your experience with gyms? Include your locations(country) because I would like to know if it differs dependingon country/city. I am very skeptical about gums can any one change my mind?

I'm in the US and my daughter-in-law had joined a gym months before she got pregnant, I guess she could have went and did small workouts there but she wanted to hold off until after she had the baby. She went to them many times to see if they would put her account on hold until after she had the baby (extend the amount of time of the contract) or get a refund. They wouldn't do either for her. So I'm guessing it's the money part instead of the caring for others part.

Thanks for the response - it would deinitely seem the case, though do know of one gym that suspended a lady's membership because she was ade redundant which is good but I do not know how many would. A colleague had to pay approx £100 to get out of their contract and prove that they were leaving the country to get out of a 12 month contract.

It just doesn't seem right but then again, there have been a lot of gyms close down and I would guess that would be part of the problem....bad business tactics. If I had a gym membership and had to cancel it, I would be glad to go back and do business with them again....a happy customer is a loyal customer!

In my opinion it is more of profit wise than health care. Here in our place, their service is more of membership accounts and do not make records on how to monitor their clients in weight problems. They really do not care if your objective will be achieved or not. Or even do efforts for you to attain your goal. Because if they will do the proper thing then they will lost their customers that fast instead they have tied them for years or long. The health clubs are part of modern technology but the real way to be more of health conscious is to train oneself to be creative in his own way. Jogging or an exercise at home is enough for the body to meet. It is not complicated for it is the real basic form of exercise. Health clubs are more for commercial functions and people who want to meet new acquaintances and let others know their lifestyle.

It is a shome really I am not against business trying to make money that what they are in business for but they should make sure that their service it fulfiling their clients needs.

its business of course. of course you need to pay for those electronic equipments that you are using and the trainers as well. some gyms are wise to have you sign contract because they only want their business to last longer especially in serving their customers. that's why they have professional instructors who'll be the one in charge in developing a good you and motivate you as well. anyway if you see a good result, you wouldnt mind the amount at all. here in the philippines, i used to work wherein our company have a gym for their employees who wants to work out and its for free.

that must be great having a free gym at work but do you use it as much as if you would if you were paying for it? Do you thinl paying for it motivates some people to go? ?

Hey there, i am from Singapore. Well i've heard stories from my friends about how their sister's caught up in this situation, which is like you've described, she finds it hard for her to quit. Because these guys just don't give up, like seriously. Maybe it really varies for different clubs, so i guess it's good that you do your research first or only join clubs that your trusted or close friends suggest to you. Perhaps that way, it's a lot safer. I just think some are really out to empty your pockets while some, maybe just some, really do care about their clients as they care about brand loyalty. So when it comes down to it, you've got to know your stuff too i guess.:)

Yes research is important and to know what you are signing up to. Some gyms will try to take legal action to me you pay if you sign up for say a 12 month contract and try to cancel it before it ends.

I think gyms are great and i used to go with my mate quite often but not so much now. All we did was pay at the door then do whatever we liked, go on whatever equipment we wanted to. Sure gyms are there to make money, they wouldn't keep them running free of charge. And i guess if you get a personal trainer they do care about your health. But it doesn't matter whether they care or not, what matters is whether you care yourself. Because if you care, that it what motivates you to work hard :)

I think this is the same all over - here in India it is the same- all out to make money- they seem to show interest in your well being and fitness but that is only initially before you sign up or for a few days after you sign up, and the interest in the member returns when the period of membership is due for renewal!!!!And when one is about to terminate the contract, as you say, there are all sorts of carrots!!While on this topic I would also like to say that I have also come across centres for yoga, aerobics, etc ( and not gyms with the latest body sculpting expensive gadgetry/ machines)which really seem to care about how and whether their members are really making use of their instructions, deriving the benefits, etc. - and the best part of such places are they are all at nominal fees & costs! So I feel that I have yet to come across or hear from anyone about a gym that really craes for their clients'/ members health & fitness.

Yes becuase many gyms will bend over backwards to make you continue on a contract, a colleague of mine left the same gym another colleague goes to. Some motnhs later the gym offered him membership for £25 but the gym membership when you sign up is about £60. If anyone is thinking of joining a gym they should definitely bargain with the gym for a fee that suits them don't just go for what they say the membership is. Bargain with them and make sure you pay what you can afford it they would do it go elsewhere.

I personally really like going to the gym. I find it to be energizing and refreshing. I find the memberships to be rather expensive (although if you paid money you would be quicker to go.) I just go to the YMCA and pay the day pass fee. it is alot cheaper. around $9.

Dont get me wrong I love going to the gym too but I was wondering whether they really care about their client. You hear some many stories about them getting people to sign contracts I just wanted to see what people thought.

hello rose ,i am from india ,in india this is not the case what you are feeling in uk ,we too have many gyms here but they spend their life in helping their members to be fit sometimes they wont even take money ,yes they wont until the results come finally i would suggest you that you need a expert trainer not the gym because a trainer can shape you even without a gym .
8 Jan 10
some gyms have personal trainer and kick starter programmes but in many of them it is free for a period then you have to pay. I want to get into personal training myself so I would want to be my own first client. But yes it is good to have a PT who will push you enough to get results.

well i really think thise gym club or health club are here for both the purposes , many think that opening a gym is a good work and it is actually , i have seen many people who are health conscious and need money so they open up gym and many people who have nothing to do invest in gym club because it is a better way to earn as now a days , each and every person want to join the gym and keep himself fit so opening a gym club is really a good decision and both the options are valid.

Yes I never thought about it like that both, But if I had a health club I would be very passionate about my clients health and not just their money. The current levels of obesity in the world is really alarnming and I would really want to help people reach their goals. Maybe I should look into starting up something...lol

I have no expierence at gyms or health clubs .i think as a private agency ,seeking profits is logical and obvious .i think most important part is taking exercise and taking full advantage of gyms and health clubs to strengthen your body.
11 Jan 10
Definitely I am all for the gym just wanted to see what people thought about whether they actually are concerned about their clients' health or are just about making money.
