I don't really like making small talks especially with someone I don't really know. But there are times when you get in an awkward situation and you just can't avoid it. Like when you're with someone in an elevator, or you chance upon an aquaintance in the grocery, or while waiting for the bus.. One trick I learned to avoid this is to pretend you're talking on your mobile phone. But for me, I can only do this for 5 minutes at most and then when you stop comes the small talk. How do you avoid this situation?

I agree with your strategy. Though there are really instances we cannot avoid such situation but to be polite enough to answer what is being discussed. For me, I just relay my words minimally on a brief way it would be understand. It help you gain confidence. It is an additional experience for me and able to know how and when will I avoid or not a small talk.

Actually I don't avoid them, I like be social, but if I don't wanna talk with someone, I just smiling while he/she is talking and act like I'm doing something else and don't put effort on what he/she is saying. Also answering with a yes/no, not talking too much and only listening, soon or later he/she will leave...
