Bicycle or motorcycle lanes on the streets --- do you have these in your areas?

motorcycles and bicycles - riders on motorcycles and bicycles

Most accidents that happen on the streets involve motorcycles and bicycles. They are covering the same streets passed by cars or trucks. In our place, we do not have special lanes for motorcycles or bicycles. We know the danger that motorists face when traveling along with cars, buses and trucks especially that bikers just "pop up" from behind cars or cross their way. Do you think special lanes be made for bicycles and motorcycles on the streets? Are these lanes already available for them in your respective places?

Hi moneymakingtoday! We do have bicycle lanes here in Osaka. It seems that there are a lot of people rides bicycles everyday in Japan. Bicycles are one of the main methods of transportation here. You can see bicycle lanes even in main streets and also bicycle parks. Though some of the bicycle parks have parking fees. Happy mylotting!

Hi.. Since cyclist are allowed to ride in pedestrian side walks, there are still pedestrian-bicycle accidents happen. And the number of this type of accident is increasing than of car accidents.Right now, Japanese people are more aware of the health risk cause by car pollution so they tend to ride a bike in going to the office than riding their cars. And also fuel is very expensive. During this time of recession, more and more people opt to ride their bikes and it also helps to have a cleaner environment. Have a nice day!

Hi Sachii, Well, accidents happen. Even when walking alone, sometimes we meet accidents. They are hard to prevent. But if people are careful and follow rules and regulations, I think accidents can be lessened, if not, totally eradicated. It is just sometimes people are in a hurry and sometimes they do not give in to others while traveling. I wish our government sees the benefit brought about by the use of bicycles. If it is feasible in your place, I don't see any reason why it can't be done in other places. People here use bicycles mostly in towns and not in cities. Many people buy cars because of obvious reasons i.e. comfort, they have bigger families, it is awkward to see well-dressed executives riding on bikes, etc.

Hi Sachii315, You may call me MMT, for short. It is good to learn that you have bicycle lanes in Japan. Since a lot of people there are using bicycles, it is just right to have these lanes constructed for them. I wish we had those lanes in our country, too. Are there many road accidents in your area with these bicycle lanes? With most people using bicycles there, I am sure you are contributing a lot to a cleaner environment. These do not emit smoke which are hazardous not just to our health but for the air we breathe, too.

Hi moneymaking! you and i are from the same place, how i wish these bicycles and motorcycles have their own lane in the streets. They are so annoying and they are so brave to cut your way in the streets and big highways. I heard from the news that there is a survey on how many motorcycle accidents there are in a month in Manila and the survey revealed that there are 300 to 400 motorcycle accidents. This means that there are 10 or more accidents of this type a day. But despite of this, they are still not afraid of criss-crossing the highway with the cars and other big vehicles. They don't also follow traffic rules as if they own the road. I hope our government will take action on this. They have to penalize them also for traffic violation to give them a lesson. Special lane is really necessary.

Hi Triplejazzm, You may call me MMT, for brevity. Yes, we surely wish we have those lanes in our country. I see a lot of accidents involving riders of bicycles and motorcycles. It is sad to say that others are very tragic. They are so annoying and you need to be extra alert while on the road. They cross and change lanes as they wish and they are unmindful of their safety. We already had one share of these motorcycle accidents. A rider was hit by the rear door of the car as my son opened it to disembark. It was a stop signal; the motorcycle was driving fast to get to the start of the line. It was a learning for my oldest son who drove the car (a sad learning). I wish the government intensifies its effort in enforcing traffic laws including motorcycle and bicycle riders. Not wearing of proper head gears is one violation and some riders just take this lightly even if this is primarily intended for their own safety.

You are right when you say that most accidents that happen on the streets involve motorcycles and bicycles. I live in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India and we do not have seperate lanes for biks and bicycles.

Hi Cybersoft01, Like you, we do not have these lanes, too. We wish we have them to help minimize road accidents. Do you wish to have them, too? These cyclists, too should be responsible for their own safety. They should exercise maximum care in driving side by side with bigger vehicles. Unlike cars, they need to balance on their bikes and with a slight hit, they will really fall down. They should also be made to wear protective head gears.

In the area where we live, there are some roads that have a bicycle lane, but there are far more roads that do not have a bicycle lane. I'm quite thankful that there is a bicycle lane on the main road that my husband has to travel to and from work because when the weather is nice outside, then he will ride his bike to and from work. He modified his bicycle last year so that it has an engine on it, it is now a pedal assisted bicycle. If there wasn't the bicycle lane on that road then I really wouldn't feel comfortable about him riding his bicycle as often as he does.

Hi Dorannmwin, It is good that you have this bicycle lane where you are. It surely has a lot of benefits. Not just for safety of bikers and pedestrians, it also saves a lot for the family. More than that, it is one good form of exercise. You are right. We don't feel comfortable about people on bikes. We know the risk and danger having to drive one unlike when you are driving cars.

yes, because of the increase of accident in my country, more and more new road or reconstructed road started to have the motorcycle lanes in th main street since motorcycles are the big part of my country, malaysia, transportation. still, the number of motorcycle accident never really drops much! we even imposed so many laws trying to keep motorcycles safe on the road...but the riders were care muh about their life!
• Philippines
7 Jan 10
Hi Px_Yeap, That is something to think about. We thought and your government thought that with these lanes, road accidents could be minimized. But as you are saying, the number of these accidents never dropped. This is a matter that government officials should give more attention to. With the laws in place and with the lanes constructed, what more can be done to help minimize, if not, totally eradicate, road accidents? Do we need to "educate" more the drivers? Do we need to administer seminars and information drives every now and then? Drivers themselves should be responsible for their own personal safety not only to save their life but also the life of others.

..Here in our area (Philippines), we dont have that motorcycle lane.. But having different lane for motorcycles and bikes will be better to avoid accident just like what you have said.. I already saw a lane for motorcycle like you said is on netherlands, and it lessen the accident.

Hi Raymondcarreon, We are in the same country and I have yet to find one lane for these bicycles and motorcycles. I wish we have those lanes in our country. It is sad to see accidents on the road involving these cyclists. Some of them don't even wear protective head gears. I hope our government will take a look on this side. Thanks and have a nice day!

We have them in some places but only for bicycles There are a few Places that have them but not everywhere which I agree they should have Also People on Bicycles should where light Clothes at Night as a few times I have just seen them in the last Minute no lights and black Clothes

Hi Gabs, Yes, I know of places which have bicycle lanes. I don't know about motorcycle lanes though. These people on bicycles and motorcycles should insure their personal safety. We know how dangerous and risky it is to be on these types of transportation. We are always at a disadvantage because it only takes a slight hit to let us fall down. We balance ourselves on bicycles and motorcycles unlike cars. Bikers here are advised to paste reflectors at the back of their bicycles and to wear light clothes while driving especially at night. They are advised to wear protective gears, too. This is especially so because they are covering roads which they share with bigger vehicles.

I live on the edge of a coastal town. There are many cycle routes for bikes and the paths are shared with people that are walking along. On some roads there are special lanes for cyclists. One of my friends goes on her bike and has her daughter in a trailer behind her. I am not able to cycle very often because I have a disabled son and a baby girl. I used to do cycling every day. I cycled to work along country lanes and a cycle path. I had to cycle up some huge hills. It got me really fit and healthy. I used to cycle to the supermarket and come home with all my food in the panniers. My bike now sits in my shed. I didn't use to have anywhere to store my bike. I used to live in a grade II listed cottage and I wasn't allowed to erect a shed in my garden there. I used to put my bike just inside my front door. I developed a love for cycling when I studied and lived in the Netherlands. It is the best country in the world for cycling. It has special cyclist paths all over the place. Motorists in the Netherlands respect safety for all cyclists.

Hi Maximax, Thanks for sharing. It is nice to know how it is in your place in respect to this topic. You must be very good in cycling and I envy you.. I grew up in the province, too but I didn't have much time to do cycling. First, we didn't have bicycles and second, I was just scared to go around in bikes. I learned how to drive one but I do not dare to go places where it puts me in difficulty maneuvering, lol. So, it is a good place for cyclists in the Netherlands. I wish we have cyclist paths that they do, too. Have a nice day!

Here the motorcycles were prohibited a few years ago. So there are no motorcycles here any more. So only the bicycle lanes are available. Besides it, the road are for the cars. I love China

Hi Youless, Yes, I know that there are bicycle lanes in China. I see that most people there use bicycles. It must be fun with most people using this as I even have fun seeing them. Cars stay on the roads while bikes on their lanes. I am sure you have a lesser rate of road accidents involving bicycles there. I love it, too. Wish we have those lanes here.

A few streets in our town have a special lane or path for bicycles only that no motorized vehicle is allowed to use, not even a Sedgeway or those vehicles that look like a child's scooter but have a motor. All motorized vehicles must ride with the traffic and obey all rules of the road.
• Philippines
7 Jan 10
Hi Bellis, That is surely a safer way. Non-motorized vehicles are slow and they should keep out of the traffic. This does not only protect themselves but it is safe for motorists, too. The risk and danger of bicycles covering the same road as other bigger vehicles should not be forgotten. Riders of bicycles and motorcycles should also wear protective head gears for their own safety.

I wish there would be a bicycle/motorcycle lane on our streets here. It is very dangerous to have them in front of you or around you because they hardly show that they signal to where they are turning and most of the time they just turn whenever they feel like it. Thus, it becomes a big percentage on our country accidents with motorcycles because of lack of their own lane here.

Hi Sublime, We live in the same country and we surely wish we have these lanes for bicycle and motorcycles. It is really very dangerous and risky not just for themselves but to other motorists, too. You are right, they just cut you from nowhere, and this surely takes you by surprise. Some of these bikers don't even wear head gears to protect themselves. I wish the government can look into this. Most road accidents involve bicycles/motorcycles.

No we do not have motorcycle or bicycle lanes in the town I live in. Now there are a few cities about 35 miles away that we go to once in awhile and some of there streets have motorcycle and bicycles lanes I have not seen anyone use them when we are there.
• Philippines
7 Jan 10
Hi Happy6162, I guess they don't have these lanes in the towns because traffic is not that heavy. Maybe because the roads are quieter there. It is happy to know that some cities near you have these but sadly, why aren't these used? Maybe most of the motorists use cars or sometimes the roads are quiet that bikes and motorcycles use the roads covered by cars. Sometimes people don't see the reason why these things are made available to them. Just like what is happening here. The city has built "skywalks" for pedestrians to use when they cross busy and wide streets. What do most people do? They still use the wide roads by taking chance when there is no car crossing. That is risky.

In my country there is no such areas. Ever hear about the government's program on reducing motorcycle accident rates, such as a separate line for motorcycles, but until now not be realized. If there is, perhaps the accident rate could be suppressed, in addition also the need for discipline, manners of behavior in driving, knowledge of signs, traffic, and driving skills of motorcycle users in driving the vehicle. Because accidents happen, usually the result of driver behavior itself, thus causing the accident to himself and others.

Hi Haryosasongko, It would, of course, help minimize road accidents when these things materialize. It is such a nice move of your government. I wish we have those lanes in our place, too. You are correct in saying that it behooves upon the drivers themselves to exercise care and caution while they maneuver vehicles. This is especially so with these cyclists because they are always at a disadvantage when traveling because they need to balance their bikes unlike cars. A continued and relentless effort to educate and upgrade the drivers on traffic rules, safety on the road and good driving behavior is always important and should always be exerted.

I live in a small area most people here is about under 2000 people at least. for each of the small towns around me also are about the same. there are no lanes for these types of vehicles in my area. there should be lanes like that for those types of vehicles. they would have to make more space to make these special lanes. we do have a rail trail its called. its for non motor vehicles and it is really long goes through about six and maybe more towns. they have it paved and well maintained when I was young it was not paved.
• Philippines
7 Jan 10
Hi Hoodwinks, In a not-so-busy area, maybe they find no reason to put bicycle lanes. But when motorists see that it is quiet on the road, they tend to speed up. Accidents still happen even in this situation. We have a coastal road here and it is not so busy but then we hear about accidents from time to time, some even very tragic. I find the rail trail good. Non-motor vehicles are slow so it is right that they have their own lanes. It is a nice idea to have them in your area.

We don't have special lanes for motorcycles where I live but we do have Bike Lanes in some areas. I live in Florida and a lot of people ride motorcycles on our roads and highways. They are subject to the same traffic laws as everyone else and will be pulled over for unsafe driving.
• Philippines
6 Jan 10
Hi Spalladino, Thanks. I have heard of places having bike lanes, too but they also don't have motorcycle lanes. I was just wondering if there are places who have these. I thought about it as some road accidents involve those on bicycles and motorcycles. Another thing, most of these cyclists here in our place get away with wearing helmets. They don't understand that the ordinance requiring them to wear these are firstly for their own safety. The motorcycle riders are subject to some of the traffic laws like security a driver's license to drive one but I don't think those on bicycles are restricted without a license.

In my hometown there were no such things like bicycle nor motorcycle lanes, the motorcyclist and bicyclist are on the street sometimes taking the fast lane and it was really dangerous. Sometimes they were speeding up between cars on the crowded street and that is true what you said that there are lots of accidents on the street because of that. But in the city I am living now, the government started to make a street regulation to keep everybody safe. In some main streets they have already implement this regulation so that there is a lane just for cyclist. I hope we can reduce the rate of accidents in the street this way.

Hi Klaudine, It is really dangerous to see cyclists racing with bigger vehicles. We do not have these lanes in our city, too. It wish the government can look into this to avoid accidents on the road. Once on a stop signal, my youngest son opened the right door of the car to alight. At the split of a second, a loud crash was heard. A motorcyclist came from behind and was hit. These motorcyclists, whenever they can, they move in front of the line in between vehicles even on stop signal. We brought the man to the hospital as there was a cut on his leg.

No we don't have any special lanes for them unless they are having some kind of marathon they will close the streets for them and I am okay with that it is just when they know it is heavy traffic time and there are sidewalks next to the street and they would rather ride in the street. I just worry about them getting hurt or causing an accident because there are some crazy drivers that just don't care and cuss at them rather than take the time to slow down and not hurt them or themselves.
• Philippines
6 Jan 10
Hi Jahernandezrivas, We don't have them either in our place. It is really very dangerous for these cyclists to drive side by side with bigger vehicles. They are riding on a transportation that needs them to balance themselves, unlike cars and buses. And, whether it is the cyclist's fault or the car driver's, cyclists are always disadvantaged. Streets here are also closed if there are cycling tournaments.

Hello friend, Actually, everytime i saw those bikers speeding up and overtaking bigger vehicles on the road it gives me creepy feelings. I really wish our government will ever give lanes for those bikers and cyclist for a safer road to every motorists. Have a good day my friend..nice topic

Hi Jaiho, That is true. I wonder if anyone of them in the city government or any other local or national agency ever thought of it. Sometimes, it takes them to ride on a bicycle and motorcycle to really feel how dangerous it is, lol. I wish someone thinks about this and they will give lanes for them. Some cyclists and bikers, on the other hand, just speed up unmindful of the danger of what they are doing. Always, cyclists and bikers are at a disadvantage in case of road accidents than bigger vehicles.

UNFORTUNTELY not. Here in my country they do not have the patients for anyone with bicycles or motorcycles on our roads. It would be nice for every government who doesn't have them already, put up lanes for these worthy travelers. It is probaly there only transport, so make their journeys safe as well. But now i have to remember if they do not get anything out of it, they will most probably not even consider it. All i can ask these cyclists and bikers, beware, keep your eyes open and be safe.

Hi Saphrina, We don't have these special lanes too in our place. I, too, wish that the government provide these motorists with the lanes for them alone. It is too risky and dangerous for them to be traveling side by side with bigger vehicles. Yes, it might only be the only transportation they can afford to buy and the government should look into the welfare of the whole populace, not just those with cars and other better transportation. You are right, it now behooves upon these cyclists and bikers to be very careful while on the road --- after all, it is for their personal safety and well being.
