tracing ancestors

I have traced my family back to the mid 1500's but have now come to a stop as from then on the records if any are held at the churches ,I live in Aust and my ancestors come from England so it is a bit hard.Just wondering how many of you have traced your tree and have you found any interesting things about your family like i have .

I have tried that before but got lost and I am not sure exactly how to do it. It sounds very interesting. I would like to try agin but it has been a while where do you start?
