Which would be the best compact digital camera? I am looking for one that is 'real value for money' - in the sense that it is should be small enough to fit into the shirt pocket, take great pictures, not costly, easy to operate and have all functions most small cameras have & also not harsh on the batteries. I was gifted an Olympus camera a couple of years back- good camera but within a year had to get it repaired and another thing that it drains out the batteries very fast, so if any of you have a suggestion please let me know.

I've tried mainly Canon and Nikon camera, and I haven't really noticed a big difference between them. Sometimes you get to try them in the shops, so you get the feel of them. Try to find one with decent optics, it is better to pay a bit for optical zoom than for the extra 4 megapixels you don't really need.

I'm not quite sure, but I'll bet you that if you buy the smallest camera now there'll be a new one out in one or two months that's smaller. That's the thing with cameras nowadays, there's always something new just around the corner.

I have gotten some amazing deals on great little cameras by Canon and Nikon by looking for the sales on previous models. I bought my daughter a Nikon for $99, when they introduced a 12 mp version of the same camera. the original price was $199. It fits in a shirt pocket and takes great pictures and videos. She used it when she went to Disney World and took shots of the night light show. My carry around camera is the Canon G9. It is a little bulky but still fits in you pants pocket or in a purse. It takes almost as good of pictures as my Canon DSLR D50. It is in the mid $400 range. It lets you do almost everything a DSLR will do. I consider it the best compact digital camera on the market.
