In India there is this plan to introduce Astrology as a Science subject in the Universities soon. What do you think of the idea?

No idiot can understand mathematics. that applies to those taking up astrology as it has so much calculations in arriving at decisions. mathematics is an essential part of astrology. if certain conditions are met, a certain event will happen. that is how science works. the same applies and works in astrology also. Every subject should be taught in Universities. Those who have an interest in it will definitely join them and study them. Modern medical science is so uncertain about its conclusions, still we teach it as science in universities across the world. Till date a definite cure for many diseases is not found for most diseases. still it is considered a definite science. simply dismissing anything without even verifying it is the hallmark of stupids and charlatans.

Do you think astrology is falsifiable? What kind of theories are framed for Astrology to be carried out? It will be helpful to those who don't know if you could clarify these kind of questions.

Falsifiability is very important in Science or should I put the word little positively and use 'testability'! If a theory is not testable it's not a theory. Just because astrology is used for thousand of years does not make it scientific. What the scientific discoveries because of holding to such a theory and whether the theory is testable and whether it is coherent etc are some criteria to make a theory acceptable. To my knowledge astrology does not work following scientific methodology. In Science if a prediction is not true then the theory generally would be refined. But that does not seem to be happening with Astrology. Moreover, a twin will have different lives and destiny. Don't you think if astrology is right they should have same destiny and lives?

Everything is falsifiable by those who want to. astrology is no exception. in the hands of a responsible person it is an asset. In the hands of charlatans it is a dangerous weapon. In astrology, everything is based on observation of the movements of the heavenly bodies. it has been done for over many thousands of years. everything has been recorded and verified over many generations, many were debated and then accepted. Everything in this universe is inter-related or has some sort of connection. the sun has some kind of influence on earth - good and bad. the same way the other planets, stars etc too have some sort of effect or influence on the living creatures on earth. modern science is only dealing with material part while the ancients were wise enough to study its effect on us, the human beings. the ancients were able to calculate the movements of planets with precision which the modern science merely confirms now. mathematics is an essential part of astrology. In the ancient India, learning astrology is a must for all those who want to be a ayurvedic physician. it gives the physician an insight into what is not visible and which cannot be touched. Since I am not an authority on the astrology, I wont be able to answer all your queries. There few good books written by astrologers who had followed strict scientific methodology. it will difficult to understand the subject, until one sits at the feet of the master a learn it.

Anything that can produce solution in some problem domain is science. Can we apply the same criteria to astrology? Astrology is a sort of star divination. I would rather call it a pseudoscience, which claims divination by position of the planets and sun and moon. In its prediction, it can make only some conjectures. For making prediction, it uses only hypothesis formed by speculation. In such speculations, it has little or no hard evidence. Therefore, I conclude that astrology is not a science; and introducing it as a science subject in the universities would serve no purpose. The students will not be able to draw any kind of benefit from it.

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure of its methodology. But I have seen again and again astrologers prediction being disproved. Since it has been falsified this way I find it hard to take that it is science. But some people, as I have discussed with them above, think differently. But till now I am not quite convinced that it is Science. So I share with you that introducing them in the Universities may serve no purpose; rather it may eat up funds that can be used for more productive research.

I don't understand what you are saying. Can you please elaborate why you call Astrology Science? I have my doubts about it being called Science, but not quite sure. Would be happy if you could say more why you thought so.

ofcourse it is science ,cause mathematics and geometry are its base just like other physical sciences

But do you think Astrology can be put in term of mathematical equation?

It must be welcomed by every one as it is also a ancient advanced science ,which without any tools can give best scientific result e.g..information about solar eclipse, lunar eclipse..

How does Astrology provide information about solar eclipse or lunar eclipse? I also have heard about Astrologers predicting who and which party will win election, and ultimately end up getting things wrong. I am not sure how their system works. But I wonder if it's try Science. Can you also explain, if you know, how they use Geometry? I thought the movement of the planets is so difficult to locate as it travels at a very high speed that astrologers basing their prediction on planetary position may not quite be accurate. But I may be wrong.

I guess its alright to include it in universities but students shouldn't be forced to take it. Some people might be interested in it and they can take that subject, while some don't even believe in astrology.

But do you think it can be called Science. And if it can be called Science then why should some people not believe it? But if it is not Science then I don't think it should be introduce in Universities. If some people like to study it then they may study elsewhere, but not in Universities as if it is Science. What do you think?
