Inflation or what!?!?

I usually take food from home but, in September, I could buy a bowl of porridge (on a "serve yourself" basis) at work for 50 pence.... In October, they put the price up to 79pence - since they'd increased the price by around 60%, I increased my serving.... yesterday it went up again to 85pence and we are no longer allowed to serve ourselves - so the portions are smaller. The canteen manager claims its due to the increase in VAT but most foods are zero rated. Isn't an increase of 70% in 3 months a tad excessive??? Its not so much the price as the principle!!
Does your works catering offer good value?

It's a tad excessive unless they were way over due for a price increase and it was actually underpriced. My husband had to through a long convoluted explanation with a customer in exactly that situation. When he evaluated their pricing, he realized that their muffins were way under market and so the muffin prices went up a larger percentage than the other price increases.

The catering used to be a part of the whole company but from last spring its run by a different company so prices had gone up anyway plus we lost our staff discount in the "restaurant". It may be they had been undervaluing their porridge but I'm throwing a Baby Bear hissy fit and boycotting it!! (Politeness prevents me from saying here exactly where they can stick it!!)

We don't have food catering at work. We have a cafeteria with complete equipment, but not tenant to provide catering. This is a bit unusual as I work in a big manufacturing plant with hundreds of people.
Anyway, that is a bit too excessive an increase. I don't think inflation would bring a 70% increase in 3 months! I think you should start bringing food from home again.
