Has anyone figured out why we still have troops in the middle east?

I feel like the government has been blowing smoke up out buts for the last several years about the objectives and time frame for American troops to be at war in the middle East. I wasn't aware that we had declared war on the entire Middle Eastern Block of countries, but apparently we have. I remember one day I was hearing about Obama beginning to bring the troops home, and then the next thing I hear we are at war with neighboring Afghanistan. I don't understand are we chasing Al Quaida, terrorist groups in general, or are we trying to eradicate the middle eastern peoples? And to what end?

Our troops are all over the world as well.I feel they are fighting the terrorists and they happen to be everywhere or we are clearing up the mess we have left behind.Frankly we are sick of all the wars why can't we just leave other countries alone and let them live how they want to.Chase the terrorist for certain but why cant we realise not every culture wants to be a democracy.Lets face it we don't really vote on many things these days everything is decided by the people at the top.We little people are pawns ,I never used to feel that way but things have changed so much.

I have come to agree with you on almost all of those points. This is an unpopular war and it has been from the beginning yet we keep fighting it. The whole thing is toppling archaological sites, governments, families, and on top or all of that it is making the rest of the world hate us. In fact we are giving them very good and valid reasons to hate america and americans. Most Americans are no longer behind this war and yet they continue on killing all of these people in our name and in the name of democracy. It is frustrating and it is sad. It is also a waste of human lives.

It's like playing the game Wack A Mole where a little critter pops out of various holes and you try to wack it on top of it's head. Al Quaida and terrorist cells aren't confined to only one area or one country. Eradicate them in one location and they pop up in another. I don't believe that going after these groups is akin to eradicating the middle eastern people in general.
