mostly it just means an online representation of your self. a lot of people do not like to use a picture of them selves online and so an avatar is a way to show others who you are with out revealing every thing about you but you can change the avatar to be what ever you want it to be. in video games the avatar is usually a 3d image and in yahoo an avatar is just a computer image or cartoon image of people that may or may not look like you. some sites use avatar in 3d chat for example imvu now has 3d messneger where you can create rooms and chat rooms with all kinds of 3d items for personal use not just for use on your avatar.
