I have being applying for study abroad for PhD. The professor asked me to go for an interview in his institute. I got the visa today and will leave for Germany a week later. I have never been to a such a formal interview! So who could help me with some details I need to pay attention to? Such as what clothes are suitable(is a suit necessary), what materials I need to prepare for the interview and so on. Many thanks!!

Hi. Looks like were striving for a PhD. degree out there! Well Good Luck. What can I suggest is to be COOL and stay CALMED. It would really disappoint you when you're too nervous. FORMALITY isn't that FORMAL. Still, people would talk, gossip, laugh and do normal things, it is just in the form of having those normal things done on the higher level, it's not because of formality. You just need to pay attention on that particular field you are having for a PhD. degree. Remember, "BE YOURSELF...". Appearance. Hmm... Appearance isn't too important when it comes to interviews. Whats important is the knowledge that bears within your brain. But somehow, you also need to look good so I suggest that you wear your uniform or something semi-formal like sleeved polo shirts (like semi-business attires). Have it ironed and neat. Have your shoes black and shiny. Have your hair clean-looking. Your face would also be a factor of who you are so keep it clean. Shave if necessary. Watch also for body odor, this would greatly DISAPPOINT the interviewer. xD There's no need to worry. Just be YOURSELF and be PROUD of who you are. Good Luck! *P.S. On the clothes part, what I suggest for you are outfits like these: http://www.polo-shirts.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/uneek_mens_formal_long_sleeve_shirt_model-300x300.jpg

Well i haven't either attended such a big interview too but i definitely know some points as i m doing BBM and my favorite subject is Human Resources. Basically one doesn't need any preparation for a big interview its just like meeting new people the only reason one gets stress cause he thinks a lots talk to hundreds of people about there experience what they asked and question try to be in there shoes which is 100% wrong never speak to another person coming out from interview or any one in fact just sit calm do not thing about topics or line again and again what u have to say cause its not like an exam in which u prepare till end and u get the paper and just write it quickly and you are done with it. Interview is all about your personality, knowledge, confidence and most important being your self. Use simple language don't use jargon or very technical terms give most live examples and mostly try to be with the truth instead of just faking cause u can get very badly stuck with wrong things u say. i got stuck many times by saying highlights people recommend like saying all good about that institute and all that trying ti impress them.

You are right! I asked the professor, he said that the interview was than formal so that I didn't need a suit and tie. I will try my best to feel comfortable with it. Thank ou so much for your advices! Have a good day, my friend!
