Ironing

In light of my recent discussion about laundry, another subject was brought to my attention that I never even thought of. So, the question that I have to pose today is about ironing your clothes. How much of your clothing do you iron? Why do you feel that it is necessary to iron your clothes? How long have you ironed your clothes? As for us, I don't even own an iron. When I am drying my clothes I dry them on the permanent press setting. My mother used to iron a few things but it was never very much that she ironed. As for my grandmother before her, she ironed everything that they owned (including underwear). Can't wait to hear from some of you.

When I was working I use to iron everything until I got a dryer that took the wrinkles out. The last few year that I worked I would be able to take everything out of the dryer and hang it up with no wrinkles. Today I do the same thing and I hardly ever have to iron which is a great thing since I hate to iron. It also saves on electric bill, which of course is a great thing.

Yes I think I would agree that its the best invention. For years my irons would constantly break down. Now I have one for 3 years but its hardly ever used. I wonder if the sale of irons has gone down because of this invention.

I absolutely love having a permanent press dryer. I think it may qualify as one of the greatest inventions that I've got in my house. I love being able to hang my stuff directly out of the dryer.

I was taught to iron shirts etc and was good at it but I loathed it and so did my sisters. My mother loathed it too and that is why she gave the job to us. We used to have to sew in the pleats in our navy blue school uniform and then press them using a damp cloth. No steam iron. and yes, we also had to iron sheets and pillowcases to but I think that it was to get the damp out of them as we did not possess a washing machine or a dryer until I was in my teens and my sister's married. Now I do not do it at all. If something is creased then I put it in the dryer for three minutes with a damp tea towel and the creases are out. I do have an iron though as my daughter likes to iron her linen clothes.

Oh, that is is a great idea to get the creases out to use a tea towel. I will definitely have to keep that in mind for the times when I am in need of creases to be out of something. I will also hang the items on a hanger and take them in the bathroom while I am showering and let the steam pull the wrinkles out as well. I learned that trick from my mother.

One thing I can't stand is ironing. So, I don't iron. Instead if something is wrinkled I put it in the dryer to get the wrinkles out. The only thing I will iron is cloth table covers. My mom and grandmom used to iron everything too. Then again, my mom enjoys ironing. Not for me though!

I don't even have any cloth tablecloths, so that isn't even something that I have to deal with. I will never, ever understand how someone can enjoy ironing.

I hate ironing, in fact the only time I do it is when I am quilting. Now my Grandmother to this day irons everything, yes even the bras and undies. She spends hours doing curtains and sheets as well, but she gladly admits that it soothes her.

Well, I suppose the reason that your grandmother does iron everything that she washes is because it is therapeutic to her. Me, I can't stand to do it either, but I can also see why you have the things that you have to iron.

Not a lot, I usually buy clothes that don't need ironing but I have some shirts that need ironing. I also often borrow an iron when I'm travelling somewhere, because the clothes get wrinkly in the luggage. I have also ironed the few table cloths I have. Luckily I don't have a lot of them. A friend of mine irons everything she has, even her underwear. I never understood why.

I have found in the majority of the hotels that we will stay in that there are irons there and I think that the reason for this is because of the fact that clothing does get wrinkled in the luggage.

I certainly wish that I had someone that was there to help me with all of my laundry. That is one task that I'm just not a huge fan of.

Hi, dorannmwin. When I iron I will just iron all of the clothes that me and my kids will be wearing when we leave out for that day or the next day. I have to iron all of our clothes because they look wrinkled and they need touching up. I have ironed my clothes for about 21 years now.

That makes sense to just iron what you are going to use at the given time. For me, I will use the permanent press setting in my dryer because I don't really have the time or the patience to try to iron things with the ironing board and such. Plus, I think it would end up being dangerous to myself or to others.

I don't have a perma press setting on my machine.I must admit to not ironing everything like I used to.I iron cotton underwear, not socks anymore..I can get away with sheets and bedding taking them out of the tumble dryer and giving them a good shake.I used to iron everything from tea towels to bed sheets but to be honest whats the point if they are folded properly and flattened out they don't need it.My sons shirts are easy iron and a i always run an iron over them .plus I press my sons trousers ,mY husbands work clothes always get a proper iron as he has to look smart while driving his lorry it is part of the dress code. Many things like blouses and cotton stuff in the summer not using the dryer then get a good iron.Your grandmother probably only could buy cotton materials which dried on the line they did not have the modern machinery we have these days.

You are probably right, she didn't have the modern machinery that we have today for a good part of her life and that is probably why she was so into ironing everything. Now, I've never lived in that time so I have no clue what it was like back then. Thank you for sharing your views.

Nope I am like you Dorann however I do own an iron but even with that I have never once ironed a single piece of my families clothing with it. I bought the iron a few years back when I was monkeying around with some cotton fabrics and was using it to iron the fabrics out, it is a great tool for when you are trying to sew. I just wash my clothes on the regular heavy setting and then use fabric softener and dryer sheets and while I am sure that my clothes have a few wrinkles in them they are not enough to make a big deal out of so I continue to use dryer sheets and softener because it seems to be doing the job just fine for my family.

If I was to ever start sewing, then I know that I would most definitely need an iron, but for the time being, I am fine without one. Plus, that is just one less thing that I have to figure out where to keep in my house with limited closet space.

Ironing can be very stressful if the clothing material is stubborn and take up most of my time. So, I would normally only iron my clothes and hubby's when necessary. I seldom do all the ironing at a time and mostly all of them I hang on the hangers inside the wardrobe. If we need to wear them, then only I will iron a couple of days before if we have to attend some functions or special occasions. Other times if we go out for some casual outings, I will only iron the clothes especially T-Shirts a few hours or a night before we go out. However, in my previous employment, I wore uniforms. I have four sets of them and usually I would iron all of them during weekends to manage my time wisely as I would be very tired in the evening.

I can see why you had to iron your uniforms when you worked at a place that required that. Now, as far as the way that you do your ironing now, I think if I had things that needed to be ironed I would do it much the same as you do.

We don't have people here that will do our ironing for us, so if we desire to have our clothing ironed we have to do it ourselves. I think it is very interesting to learn that there are people that do the ironing for individuals in other parts of the world.

Back in university, I owned a small iron which I used to iron my clothes everyday. I would do this on my bed in the dorm room. I think I got it from my parents who also iron everything(I think including underwear). But eversince I've discovered wrinkle-free clothes, I've been trying to switch all my shirts and pants. After washing, just dryer, and then hang!

That is the way that the majority of my clothes are as well. As a mother of two children and a babysitter of two more, the simplier that things are for me, the better.

I would iron my clothes may be i forgot to add---used to there lol,but these days we offer them to the near by iron shop who would do the ironing stuff--so i had a relief--if at all i need any clothes in urgency like if i had to attend surprise parties or some outings with friends then i would gladly iron my clothes.it would be better if we know everything so we dont have to depend on someone else and i follow this in every aspect of my life.great day.

Ironing is required not only to make clothes look smart but also to make them germ-free. I generally use to iron my own clothes and that of my son, wife, mother and father, all most once in a week. I enjoy ironing my clothes of my own. Because most of the I don't know why, I don't like that my clothes to be ironed by any other member of my family or a laundry. May be it's because I am bit particular in my dress, especially when I dress up for any function.

I never thought about ironing as a way to take germs out of your clothes. However, now that I've heard a couple of people mention this, I may be more likely to buy an iron of my own.

hi dorannmwin my iron is in storage but my clothes are mostly wash and wearable so no problems there. even when I was in my own apartment I did not iron as my things were all permanent press. So I did not need ironing which is fine as thats one job i do dislike so much.

If I have learned one thing from this discussion, it is that there are a lot of people that don't like to iron. I think most clothes today are able to be washed and worn, but I also know that there are some exceptions to this rule as well.

Shhhhhhhhh. Zero. Absolutely zero ironing. We have an iron, but I don't use it. Hubby irons out his shirts sometimes, but I've gotten him wrinkle free shirts so he doesn't have to do that as much anymore. My mother used to iron clothes all the time - in fact I used to love helping her out with it (I loved that steam sound). Before I used to feel guilty about not ironing - but now I don't see anything wrong with NOT ironing. I just make it a point to not buy clothes that can wrinkle up - hee hee. Oh - one tip - I pull things out of the dryer and hang them up before it stops to sit there. That sit down time can act like an iron but wrinkle up the pile!

Hi Dorannmwin, Ironing has become our "culture", lol. Yes, we always iron our clothes, except for ones that we use at home. The clothes that we wear outside the house are carefully ironed. Generally, people iron their clothes where we are. It is always neat and presentable wearing ironed clothes. There are fabrics though that don't need ironing. It is always a source of a joke when you see a crease on someone's shirt. Friends would comment that he is being pursued by an iron. That, he readily understands it to mean that his clothes need ironing. We iron our underwear, at least for us. I don't have any idea with other household. It is for hygiene purposes. I always think that underwear being made to dry in the air or from the dryer needs ironing if only to kill bacteria that may have accidentally "touched down" on it. The heat from the iron should help rid this out.

I never, ever understood why there were people that ironed their underwear, but the reason that you've given is a very feasible sounding reason. Thank you very much for sharing your inpot.

I never iron. I usually pull everything out almost immediately. I have never been a big fan of ironing. I know how to use an iron, but never have used it. Once I needed a skirt ironed and before I had a chance to iron my mothrr-in-law had grabbed my skirt while I was in the shower and she ironed it for me.

That was very nice of your mother-in-law to do that for you. Before my grandmother passed away she would iron for us even though no one in the house was used to having our clothes ironed. I think it was something that relaxed her.
