time passed by. my housemate and i stayed in the same place. tolerating each others presence. we went on like we are not seeing each others' existence. so we agreed that we will be finishing the contract's terms. it was a veryh stressful event since the last time we had a clash. but now no more. the owner contacted me. they expected us to be sending them our next payment for this month. and i was wiling to send it immediately. but suddenly the owner told me that my housemate decided to eventually leave. that he will not continue to stay any longer. and that he told the owner that he will never pay any cent from the contract. the owner planned to lock our apartment. surprisingly, they noticed that the things of my housemate are gone. we learned that he had actually already transferred to another place. i was shocked. the owner was very disappointed. he came to me at work and we had to approach our HR manager to help us contact this housemate and make arrangement. things were planned but apart from that, the owner has his plans as well. i don't know what's gonna happen next. quite a fast paced event in a matter of 5 days. i will add some more till i see the result of the owner's plans. thanks Evrwonder.

This depends on where you live and what you are willing to do about it. If this persons name is on the lease or rental agreement they are legally responsible for their share of the rent. The rental agreement itself should give an idea of to what extent they are responsible. Whether that be for the full term of the agreement in the case of a lease, or whether they have only an obigation to pay for the month in which they still lived there. Either way you should be able to recoup the money that is owed. Unfortunately you will probably have to take this person to court in order to get that debt paid.
