As some of you will know we have had a problem with frozen pipes in our house as this Big Freeze shows no sign of abating. Anyway, the father-in-law and his daughter's boyfriend (who is a heating engineer/plumber) came round this morning to sort it all out. Basically the water was freezing in the pipes because it had nowhere to go due to the main tank being FROZEN SOLID on the outside, therefore the overflow became a problem as the snow is now packed ice in the guttering! It's all very complicated but one of the pipes has been replaced and covered in a nice jacket, along with the tank, so, hopefully they will now keep snug and warm...just like I intend to do now the central heating is back on!
Have you had similar problems to us? What's it been like getting someone out?

Thank you for your kind words. In actual fact the forecasters got the weather wrong for last night. The South East of England was going to get a major dump of snow and it never materialised! It is now thawing up here in the North of England which I'm really pleased about because I have to go outside tomorrow.

Luckily we haven't had similar problems. The news here reminds us every year to let our water drip from the faucet a bit, I think it's supposed to help with the water not freezing. I'd suspect, or I think they've also said that letting it run for a few minutes help. I'm sure hot water would do the trick and keep the tank or hot water heater warm.
In any case, sorry you've had the problem but glad your getting / gotten it fixed!

Yes it was a real worry at the time...water coming through a ceiling isn't good! Luckily, we know and trust the people that came round to fix the pipes so I'm confident we won't have any more problems...especially since the tank and pipes are now insulated.

yep, all snug and warm in a nice coat of insulation. I always trust and prefer people I know to do work I can't or don't know how to do, or would be too risky for me to do without causing more harm.
