With property values decreasing I'm curious for those whom have lost a significant amount of value did they increase yours? decrease? or stay the same?
Our values only went down say 3,000 wich isn't too shabby. But our taxes were up $100 due to a raise in school taxes but that was our only increase other than rubbish removal was up a few $. Eitherway I'm thankful to live in a town w/ low taxes the house across the way who was annexed into city that is similar pays double the taxes!

i'm sure they probably are-it's a given in my area.
but ma hit 65 recently so she gets a discount.
it's a piddly discount, but discount none the less.

yea they do base it on home values too-but they apply the discount for 65+ and/or military after they figure the tax.
it's funny, there's a major discrepancy between what the city says it's worth and what the insurance says it's worth..we're talking like 200K difference.
even the insurance people said we're paying too much..
what can you do tho?
what can you do tho?

They give a discount based on your age in your area? that's nice of them.... even if it's piddly it's better than nothing. Sadly here they base them on the value of your home not your age, but even with values falling in many places the taxes are still increasing.

Ours went up just a few dollars this year. I think that the increase in our property taxes was due to an increase in the cost of our garbage removal (we are in the city service area so our trash expenses are included in our property tax). I don't know what the value of our house has done, but I honestly think that it should be at least a little bit higher than it was when we bought it because we've made some significant improvements to it. Oh well, I know that in the long run the value of our house is going to go up.

That is true in the long run your values will go up. They don't always increase the value of your home within a year of your improvments. They assess most homes every couple years or so depending on how compliant they are with keeping up with their assessment cycles.

I of course don't have property taxes because I don't own my own home. However, when I was at my parent's home last week, my dad commented to my mom about the notification they got in the mail, telling them their property taxes had increased. Another wonderful expense for my parents to have to pay for.

My house lost about 20% of its value so far but our taxes haven't increased. We voted down ALL new taxes and voted down levy renewals. I hope the city, county and state government now realize that we can't take on any more tax burdens. Granted, I bought my house for under $100K but the loss in value is alarming. I now owe more than it's worth--not by much but that's still alarming.

I hear ya we paid under $100k too on our fixer upper. Even w/o doing any major work beyond redoing the kitchen ourselves & the flooring we appreciated 50% during the 8yrs we've owned this house. But I think we fell only like 1,000-3,000 so it hasn't impacted us much thus far.
I hear ya so many places are taxing residents more to make up for the deficites in their budgets. In the city my IL's live in they added a "wheel tax", basically if you own a car registered w/ the state in that city they are slapping an extra $50 ect. To have a for sale sign on your vehicle you have to buy a $35 permit so they don't ticket & tow your vehicle. I'm so glad I don't live there!
