Do You Take Too Much Stuff With You On Holiday?

I'm not too bad but if I forget something, then I can moan about it for a few minutes then I'm ok once I've let off steam lol. It all depends on where I am going and for how long what I take with me. If I travel abroad for - say - a week I will take less than I would if I was going for two (usually more clothes but end up wearing tops more than once anyway, after handwashing 'em of course) but if it's for a weekend or 4 nights then I will take a hold-all rather than a suitcase. I always take loads of underwear though, just chuck as much in as possible! I do iron certain items before putting them away but I try to take as many clothes as possible that DON'T need ironing, it's a chore I can well do without when I'm away!My Mum lives 100 miles away and the only way I travel there now is for my husband to take me in the car so I can take loooads of bags lol. When I used to commute from Mum's to here I would catch the train from work, so I would always make sure I never had too much with me as it is a nightmare if you want to store any large bags on trains, so I avoided it at all costs! When travelling abroad I probably check that my Passport is on my person at least 20 times...and that's before I get in the airport! Depending on the bags I have with me I either keep it zipped up in the front of the bag or in my hand! John has this neat wallet thingy that Mum bought him and he's used it a couple of times as you can store more than one passport in it, plus money, loadsa things, but I still say "can you check to see if my passport is in your wallet" lol. The look he gives me when I say this is priceless. So, what are you like when you go anywhere? Do you take (literally) the kitchen sink with you or do you travel light? I'd love to know!

I like to travel fairly lightly to make my trip comfortable for me. I wear a moeny belt with my valuables in. I take a handbag with my camera in. I take a backpack and then I can carry my luggage but keep my hands free. I pack my clothes in the bottom of my backpack along with my clothes washing kit. In that I have a travel wash line and some travel sized washing liquid. In the middle part of my backpack I put my toiletries. I keep a supply of food. I take a notebook and pen plus a novel to read. In the top of my backpack I put my travel guide book. In June 2008 I took my toddler son to Latvia. We took between us 15kg of baggage.

I try to plan what I'm going to wear. I may not wear exactly what I brought, but I do say - this top and this top and clean socks and undies. I haven't traveled in a while, so the last trip I took was a 2 night visit to Houston Dec of 08 and before that was an over night to Tyler Texas. The last big trip was in 07 to New Jersey because my cousin was dying. Honestly, tho I always find things left in the suitcases from the previous trips - not dirty clothes, but trinkets I picked up.

I am totally terrible about unpacking - I found things from our 2003 London trip when I was packing to go to NJ

Really? I can't say I've found things in a suitcase from previous trips although I did discover a clean pair of socks in the bottom of my holdall that I was quite pleased to find, actually lol.

I take as little as possible. I take essentials. If we are staying in a hotel then I do not bring shampoo conditioner etc. I bring clothes that pack small and insist everything do double duty! for instance pj's have to be usable at the pool as well.

Many thanks for your response, it's much appreciated. Yes, I've got to the stage where I don't take too many toiletries and I try to stay somewhere decent so I know there's gonna be at least some essentials in the bathroom.

A holiday is a vacation. I had to say to a class of school children a holiday might be an afternoon at Chester Zoo, a day trip to Liverpool or a weekend away in North Wales. I am an independent traveler and I like to go on trips. I went to Cape Town and the Garden Route last year on my last trip.

I don't mean to offend anyone who hasn't been on holiday for a long time. In actual fact, I've not been away "properly" since I got married in April 2008. If I go anywhere it's within England, either in connection with away football trips (not many of those) or to my Mum's, that's it..nothing too grand.

I love to travel (in fact all my online earnings are saved towards a yearly vacation). But I have all sorts of health problems (back surgery, arthrosis and others) that make it imposible to carry too much weight. I have a very good suitcase with big wheels and I carry all that the suitcase can hold and nothing more. I have one of those wonderful belts where you can put your money, passport, credit cards, hankies and even my ciggies when I smoked. I don´t carry a handbag unless I can put it in the suitcase. If I´m travelling to a place that has such a different season that I have to dress in the airport, I carry a plastic bag with the other clothes. As soon as I reach my destiny, I put the bag inside my suitcase. When I was young and my hubby was alive, I took lots more than I needed and bought a lot of things during the trip. NOW I know that wasn´t very bright! Happy posting!

Happy posting to you too my friend..and thanks very much for your response. Wow, you are an organised person, I can see that. I wonder if we become more organised the older we get..you know, we make a mistake then don't repeat it, like taking too much stuff hehe lol.

I definitely take too many things with me. When I went to the US, I had a big suitcase and I bought one there and I could barely fit all the things inside the two suitcases! I bought many new things there though. But I have a large suitcase that is always too small for everything that I want to pack. I usually take two or three pairs of jeans, many MANY shirts and tops and of course shoes, and my necessaire. Of course I always have to take some underwear with me. Sometimes I take a few books with me. The weight of my suitcases has never exceeded the weight limit though, but my suitcase is always stuffed. If I travel by car though, I usually take another bag or suitcase with me.
