You think your plane is leaving at a certain time, it leaves earlier. You manage to get another flight, and arrive at the dock as your cruise ship is sailing away in front of your eyes. What would you do? Your trip has been paid in full. Would you turn around and go back home or try to reach your ship and join the cruise? Share your thoughts.

These are misfortunes one needs to face. If there is a way out I will surely resort to it but if nothing can be done to reach that ship that has already left the shores what alternative do I have but to turn back!

...Hi there allknowing, Indeed misfortune is the right word. This actually happened to me a few years ago. I, for some reason thought my plane to Florida was leaving at one o'clock, it was departing at nine o'clock in the morning. I think I woke up at ten after nine or so, rushed to the airport, got another plane to Florida, and made it to the dock. A man who worked for the cruise ship said to me "I know you can't tell, but the ship is leaving" and indeed it was. I was left standing, and very upset. I was determined to get on the ship and I did. Cost me a litte more, the ship gave me some discounts for a future trip and some other things. It wasn't their fault but I appreciated what they did. Five more people in a group missed the ship as well and got there the same time I did. I had a great time after I boarded. Thanks for responding. Take care.

If there is a will, there's a way and you proved that!

Of course I would try to reach the ship. Cruise ships stop in a town every day or almost every day, so worst case scenario you would probably only need to fly there or maybe even drive by car, since maybe the next stop is not far away. I would never turn around and go back home, because I would be in a bad mood for the whole week or even month. If you have plans and everything paid, you can't just give up on everything and go home. That would be a waste of money.

....Hi tanchyka, You are so right, and that is why I did everything I could to reach that ship. One of the ship's employees took me under her wing after
I almost broke down in real tears. I caught up with the ship the next day, and had a great time from there on. I don't think I had any thought about going back to a boring house. I tried to make sure from then on, to check and recheck the times for my flights. Thanks for responding, take it easy.

If I traveled to the airport and found out my flight had already departed I would claim on my travel insurance if it was possible to do so. If I didn't want to do that I would buy a flight to another destination. Then I would purchase a guide book for that country. Then off I would fly. Like for example if I missed my flight to New York I would try to get a flight to Boston or Washington DC. Then I would make sure I would get my flight home from New York. Alternatively I might have booked a trip to Thailand but would end up in Japan. If I was booked on a cruise and I missed it I would try to catch up with the ship. I would fly to the next port in order to board to ship. I wouldn't just go home and forget my trip.
In 2006 I booked a flight to Cancun in Mexico but a hurricane hit the Mexican Coast. My flight was canceled and I got my money refunded. I felt so sad and worried. I was all ready for a tropical vacation. I rang some travel agents and one offered me a flight to The Maldives for £200. I said yes please and I rushed off to the library to borrow a book about The Maldives. When I read the accommodation listings I noticed the very high prices. I took double the money and spent most of it. I stayed five nights on Asdu Island, two nights in Male the capital and seven nights on Gan Island.

...Hi maximax, It sounds as though you turned a disappointing situation into a very enjoyable one. Things don't always turn out the way we want them to, but if we perservere, we can sometimes make them better. This actually happened to me and I refused to go home and I finally got on that ship, I had a very good time from there on. I try to make a point of getting to my plane on time when I travel. Thanks for your response, take care.

I´d do all I could to get on that ship. There´s always a way. But I know I´d do everything yelling and crying. I lose my control on such occations.

...Hi marguicha, I know, it's upsetting. This is what happened to me a few years back. I managed to reach the dock just as the ship was leaving. The other thing was, once I was on my way to the ship in Florida, the cab went in the wrong direction because of being unfamiliar with the dock area. I might have made it on the ship, if we had not lost time going the wrong way. I was just about in tears, and on the verge of boo hooing out loud, as I watched my ship moving out to sea. It worked out, I met the ship and got on at another port, and had a very nice time from there on. Quite an adventure, I tried to make sure I knew the right time of my flights from then on. :o). Take care and thanks for your response.

In this case what you should do is call the cruise line and try to arrange boarding the ship by other means. Many times the cruise line has entertainers flying in at any given time or boarding at different port of calls. Other ways you could get on your boat is through connections the cruise line might have with sister ships in the same docking location as yours. As for missing a plane that one is alot easier if you have the time. While on vacation in florida several years ago my father got the departure days mixed up and we missed our plane back home to California by a whole day. Believe it or not this happens alot more than you might think, and the airline deals with it by putting you on the next flight available that has room, and often times at no additional charge or a small fee.

...Hi there RAVENBLADE0842, These things do go on in daily life as you say. One of the cruise ship associates, as you mentioned, helped me with connections, because this did happen to me. She contacted the ship, had her cousin drive me back to the airport. I reached the ship at another port. Everyone at my table for dinner wanted to know what happened to me. I enjoyed the rest of my trip, after the trauma of seeing the ship sailing away a few yards or so in front of me and I couldn't get on it :o). From then on I always tried to check and re-check my flight times. Thanks so much for your very insightful comments. Take care.

In 1996 I took my family on a 7 night cruise from Fort Lauderdale on the Celebrity Century. Landing at Miami we took a taxi to FL and about 15 minutes later my wife discovered that she was missing her pouch with her passport and voucher for the cruise! We had to turn the taxi round and return to the airport. We frantically searched all the places we had been as well as the restroom she had used but to no avail! We were in a poor state mentally due to the 13 hour flight from South Africa and were at the end of our tether when miraculously someone showed up and said that one of the restroom staff had found the pouch and handed it in at the help desk. That was a close shave because as the saying goes "Someone without a passport is someone without a country!"
