Yams and Sweet Potatoes

Could someone please explain to me what the difference is between a Yam and a Sweet Potato. Thanks!

For me the difference is Yam taste good as flavor for ice cream but I dont think sweet potato will taste good as ice cream. What do you think? I also think that yam is more sweeter than sweet potato and sweet potato is sweeter than plain potato.

I can't imagine either one being a flavor of ice cream. That would not be a good taste to me. Thanks for your input but I truly thought the sweet potato was sweeter. I guess I will have to do a test myself.

You can find a yam flavored ice cream here in the Philippines. And I guarantee you that it really taste good. Yam flavored ice cream is my favorite.

nutritionally they are the same, both are good source of complex carbs, the only difference i know is there glycemic index, i'm not quite sure which has higher glycemic index, but sweet potato has ideal glycemic index (55%)..

I thought they taste the same to me. Some people say they are different but I don't see the difference thank you for claifying.
