Job Hours Being Cut

In this recession, I hear a lot about people losing jobs. I think only occasionally I've heard about hours being cut. Now, I've been working full time since October 15th (more infamously known as the Day of the Balloon Boy Hoax) and recently had my hours cut to 20 hours a week. Most people, I imagine, would be upset but not me. Actually, I asked for the cut. Why? I am mainly in charge of a large warehouse of files but once everything is put away nice and neat, there's nothing to do. My supervisors would spend time trying to find something for me to do in between and well, most times it's not what I signed up for. I have my strengths, which I can perform and deliver really well on, but I also have my weaknesses (for instance I'm not a people-person). So how many of you have had your job hours cut? Did it upset you or were you relieved? Am I crazy or reasonable?

Although myself is not in the rat race arena anymore, but my sister is working for a medium class company. Due to recession, the boss decided to try to cut as much expenses to make sure the company will be able to survive. The boss even decide to cut nearly half of my sister and all her colleagues salary, due to recession. Since he don't want any of his staff to resign during this time, the boss decided to even request them to come to work only half day on everyday except on Monday, which is full day. Although my sister earned less from this company but at least she is still able to do some part-time job to earn some more extra income.

It really is a tough time. Hopefully things will pick up again. I may or may not do something else part time, maybe take courses at the community college. It's always best to just keep moving forward and get on to the good things when you get sour milk.

You are fairly young. Do you live at home? Most people would be upset because their income would be taking a 50% hit. They'd need to find a full time job or get part time work to makeup for the loss.

I live at home but I pay rent and car insurance (plus gotta fill the car up on gas) and buy my share of the groceries. I admit, it's not too much as far as bills go and I can handle it. Also, I'm not the kind of person who spends a lot of money on things I want but might not need. I think it'll work out just fine until I get my other dreams off the ground.

I think your very reasonable and showed your worth to your company. Wanting to be efficient and not Milk the company, I hope they appreciate that.

Thanks for your comment. The fact that they were thinking about it anyway but didn't know how I'd react tells me something. I'm actually worth something to them that they cared about if I'd storm out and quit altogether. I just know what I can't do for them and will admit it instead of trying to fake it to hold down a 9-5.
