Came across the issue of academic doping the other day. Academic doping is the act of using 'cognitive enhancers'. Students usually take these drugs to stay alert and study harder during the run-up to exams and tests. Such drugs are called Nootropics, also called 'smart drugs'. What do you thing about using 'cognitive enhancers'? Two other question arise here. One, can drugs actually make us smarter or enhance our intellectual capacity? Two, is it ethical to use these drugs for exams?would it amount to cheating? These drugs do help people with Alziemers and people with other cognitive disorders. Will they then work on normal people too? I have more questions than insights in this discussion. Hope to get some opinions from you guys.

they weren't around when I was in school, or I might've been tempted to find some Are they cheating? I don't know... I always rather wanted to go to that college in OZ where you took a pill to get learn stuff. Sounds good to me - pop that algebra pill...

I'm sure its illegal in all sorts of ways I'm also sure it doesn't "stick" the way really learning it would. I guess I feel they are cheating themselves by not really learning the information correctly. if somethings worked well for thousands of years, what is going to change with a few pills? just better test taking... and then they aren't really prepared for the next round.

the problem is the next round gets easier because of good marks. People from certain good colleges will get jobs with ease.

Pressure! Pressusre is why they do it, School is not about "getting educated" It is a big competition. They are trying to do what they are pushed to do. Instead of our children being able to learn at their own pace so that they grasp the concept of things and fully understand what they are learning. They are rushed into learning and if the pass test they get awards, monies for school, chance to go to best schools. They are expected to this in a certain amount of time and it is stressful on a child. If you fully understood there would be no need to be nervous just before a test. If you do not understand, your nervous, and you feel you need a substance to help ou pass a test........Then You are not ready for the test. We punish our children for bad grades, failing test etc. Who wants to be punished when they know they tried, know they are not ready for the test, What are they to do? And as far as the kids go adults are not better, You take a herbal supplement ginko biloba so that you can get thru trainings on your job. Where do you think they get it from? But for those of you with children....Be easy on your child failing grades and doing poorly on test could mean he needs something simple as glasses. I know my daughter was failing and could not read. We got her glasses and overnight she became a superstar and all she needed was glasses. Shame on me!

That was a simple solution to a difficult problem, glasses! I hope in time we can find a solution for the mess our education has come to become.

The more i think about this, the more abstract i become. What is life all about? how do you define progress? Whether happiness has increased over a period of time? All our intelligence, innovations are to aid us to perform better and lead a comfortable life. Machines are to help us, computers are for same purpose. facebook, orkut interactions are better than real life!!!! Trying to keep it simple, our effort is do things which we could previously not do or to do it more easily. Byproducts and side effects be ignored. Oral Contraceptive pill, Viagra are easily acceptable !!!! Cognitive enhancers will be used, with more awareness and refined formats. There will be lot of learning on the way. Ethical!!! If it available only to the privileged few, it becomes unethical. Let us say govt. distributes it freely, free of cost, it may be acceptable, otherwise it will be deemed as rich having an unfair advantage.
