"Let Me Be Clear"??

In Obama's speeches, one favorite phrase: 'Let me be clear' Plenty of others have taken note of this habit, but they usually dismiss it as a standard time-buying device, like Bill Clinton's "make no mistake" or Richard Nixon's eerily similar "let me make one thing perfectly clear." But Obama's declarations of clarity are far more than a little presidential throat-clearing. Let me be clear," Obama said when he introduced himself to the country at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. "We have real enemies in the world. These enemies must be found. They must be pursued. And they must be defeated." Talking about health care in July: "Let me just be absolutely clear: Medicare is in place and as long as I'm there . . . Medicare will continue to be in place." And when he got word of his Nobel Peace Prize in October: "Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments." When Obama is being "clear" these days, he is saying something quite different than when he was being clear in 2007 and 2008. His shifting use of the phrase traces the arc of Obama's time on the national stage, from campaign sensation to a president beset with challenges that rhetoric alone cannot overcome. In a presidency in which everything is murkier than Obama could have imagined, the "let me be clear" preface has become a signal that what follows will be anything but. Do you agree that the "let me be clear" preface has become a signal that what follows will be anything but!!!!?

I have to agree with you. Most of those catch phrases mean anything but how they are being used. That can be said of just about all presidents unforuantely and all politicans. Like his "let me be clear" about no new or increase in taxes on people making less than 250,000.00 a year." Not one dime". I think were his exact words. My family's yearly income is no where near that....not even half...heck we are not even anywhere near 100,000.00 a year....but our taxes will go up if the 40% tax on "premium" healthcare plans is kept in the new healthcare bill when it passes. It is a federal tax....and it is going to cost us a lot more than a dime each month....it is going to cost us any extra $135.00 out of my HB's paycheck each month (his company sent out letters to let people with the "premium" plan know how much it was going to go up if it passed)....can you say a nice chunck of out of our grocery money. What will end up happening is we will have to drop our PPO and go to an HMO because we can not afford to pay that new tax. Which is a downgrade in healthcare for our family. And it will be more expensive for us when we do go to the doctor because the co-pay is higher and the deductable is higher too. It is a loose, loose situation for us. Either way we are going be spending more on our healthcare. Unless I can keep everyone in the family for ever getting sick or needing to go to the doctor...with two small kids what are the chances of that? Also my dad makes nowhere near it either and he has already noticed a difference in his army retirement check. His check in December was the same as always...the check in January was $30.00 less...the enclosed noticed with it explained that it was due to a federal tax increase and a "change in the tax codes". I am still trying to find out what tax code change and increase it is talking about. That was more than a dime. He makes less than 250,000.00 Lies, Lies, Lies.

I am really sorry to hear about you and your family's tax problems. I do not think Obama or his administration knows the meaning of the word "clear" becuause everything seems to be hidden between layers of double talk. Hope you get everything worked out or at least some "clear" answers! BTW as I cannot post a good like to my source in the discission text I shall try it here. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/14/AR2010011403872.html?wpisrc=nl_politics:

Yes,it is an expression that now cant be relied upon. People who are verbally gifted, as Obama seems to be, can say exactly the right words and phrases that get people sucked in. Thats okay, if your oral gifts are used for genuine reasons, but when it becomes a "catch phrase" that doesnt mean genuine action, then people come not to belive the speaker. It's sad, if Obama has gone down that path.

I'm beginning to think Obama has a speech randomizer where he just enters the subject and the computer puts a speech together using all his little catch phrases and empty promises. I look at it differently. The "let me be clear" is like he is talking to children or mentally deficient people, which I think is how he views us. He thinks we are stupid. Hell, he knows we are stupid because look who we elected! When I hear that phrase I know I'm in for a load of bull manure.

"Let me be clear" ought to go down in a book of famous (and infamous) quotes. It should go between between Bill Clinton's "It depends on what the definition of 'is' is," and Nixon's "I am not a crook". It'd make a great Christmas gift, something to make you laugh.

Hiya whiteheather, Let´s just hope that he will keep his aims clear as he says. I have not heard him give a speech very much in English it´s always translated so they are always going to change the words to their own meaning. This gives us a different aspect of Obama over here because of the language change except for those of us that speak English naturally. Instead of letting Obama speak in English so we can hear him properly they are forever slapping on a quick translation into Spanish so that´s it.
