Hi Mylot Friends, Did you have any experience of receiving any excess or extra money as a change for buying or paying something? what did you do? did you return the excess money or you just keep it? what was the immediate thing that comes into your mind? did you ever consider telling yourself---"anyway, it's already given to me and it's not my fault...so..." whatever it is please share...thanks!

Hello Ms Several times throughout my life, I've received back too much change for purchases, sometimes as much as ten dollars, and while I'm briefly tempted to keep it, as no one would probably know it was given to me, my conscience always kicks in...I would know, and God would know, and at the end of the workday, the shortage would show, and someone would have to pay that out of their own pocket, so I've always returned it! Yes, I have a horridly active conscience!! Part blessing part curse?? LOL People work hard for their money, and we all make mistakes. I would always wonder, Am I taking food from their children...or themselves?? To keep it would just give me a terrible stomach ache!

karen dear...we always follow the good dictates of our conscience and the best one is doing good to others. it will be an extra effort and even money for us but it will give us a great feeling knowing that we makeone's life easy for returning that extra money.

Hi Karen, you have a kind heart thinking about the consequence your action may take once you did not return the extra money. conscience will always be thre to remind us and good that you listen to your conscience friend. perfect decision. the feeling is so good. what makes it more great is seeing the reaction of the person who gave your the extra money that she was relieved of any further trouble.

Hey msfrancisco, this is an automatic reaction that my mother taught my when I was a child. I hand it straight back. Actually, it happened to me lst week. It was only a small amount, but even if it's a large sum, my action is the same.

Hi Mipen, You have an virtuous mom. She will be very proud of you and happy that she made her job well for teaching you the right values and living with it now. i am also proud of you friend that you do return it. so this is a timely discussion for you right? as you had a fresh experience--only a week's old experience about returning an extra amount. thanks mipen and have a blissful weekend!

I work as a cashier and I know all too well how easy it is to have two bills stick together when handing back change or to get distracted and hand a little too much back. I am ever so grateful for those honest ones that tell me I've made an error. I have even had some go home and come back when they realize that I've handed them too much. Not everyone is like that. I have realized my error a couple of times as the person is walking out the door and before I can stop them, they are gone. I've actually heard people bragging about it being their lucky day when they get too much change back. What they may not realize is that often times the cashier will put that money back in the till out of her own pocket. I have done that because it is my error and I don't want my boss to be shorted due to my carelessness. On the flip side of this, I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've been handed 2 20's stuck together or a 50.00 bill when the customer thought they were giving me 20. I could profit off from such people but I don't. It's just wrong. The lottery? I've had people hand me what they think are 10.00 winners only to turn out to be 100.00 winners....again, I could keep my mouth shut but I don't. So anyone thinking it is cool to keep that extra few bucks the cashier accidently hands you ought to realize that this works both ways. Would you want it done to you?

Hi there,Thanks for understanding. I get a tad bit worked up when I read of people considering keeping it. Yes, we do have to be extra careful but still mistakes do happen on both sides of it.

Hi Sid, Now i fully understand your comment with the other respondent. i am happy that cashiers like you responded on here so that we can also hear your side. thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings about this concern. Well said. i admire you for your courage to speak out your mind. aside from me i hope those who will read your comment will surely learn from here and will be touched about your sharing. but then again cashier must be extra careful and people must do their fair share in returning whatever excess amount. Thank you. i appreciated you taking the time to respond! more power to you.

you just shared what you want to say and it's fine. at least this gives you the chance to be heard. you did make a good representation of other cashiers who had the same experience. cheers for you friend!

hello msfrancisco! i always return any excess change that was given to me... its not mine keep it? & i know where to return it so no reason to keep it... i am also a cashier before and i know the feeling when we get shortage in our cash register...the cashiers are the one who pay for it! huh! but as a cashier, i also experience having some overage, sometimes some customers forgets their change, what i do in this case is to try looking for them and give them their change...money is not that easy to earn and every cents counts! but if i as not able to see the particular customer, the excess money is just reported to the management...and its theirs! haha honesty is still the best policy. but if im going to pick money on the street & i don't know who owns it, honestly? i just keep it! haha and look at it as a blessing! since i don't know where or whom to return it...

yeah, and i think it will just bring guilt feelings when we spend money that we know that are not ours... and we know that someone will suffer because of that...hehe

round of applause for you friend. we never want the feeling of letting others suffer while we are enjoying the fun of having extra money. i am scared of karma--golden rules still applies for me all the time.

Hi CK, I know you will. given all the means and access to return---there's no reason for not returning it. hahahaha...for sure i will do the same too of keeping the money found along the street or give to the church or the street kids. I understand where you are coming from being a cashier is not easy and it will always be right to return any excess money as the cashier will bear the consequences of paying any shortage in the income at the end of the day!

Hi, Ms Francisco! If I am still in the shop and realize that the cashier has returned some extra money to me, I would definitely give it back to her. However, it happened before when my hubby and I were already inside the car and when we counted the money at home, we noted that the cashier has wrongly returned the balance to us. So, we didn't go back to the shop instead we just kept the money. It might teach the cashier to be very careful next time. Oh, so bad of me!

So would you feel the same if the situation were reversed and the cashier decided not to run after you to give you the extra change when you have given too much? I can't even tell you how many times a customer has given me money stuck together or there is a 20 folded in amongst a stack of ones. I run to the parking lot and flag them down to give them their money. I have also put in the register for people like yourself and it sux because sometimes it has really made things tight at home. It was my mistake so I do feel responsible enough to pay up but at the same time, people who deliberatly take advantage of someones mistake....Thing is that I know some of the people who would do this because all too often I realize the mistake as they are walking out the door....a look on their face or whatever.

Hi Corry, Yes you are right...it will give the cashier the lesson to be very careful and efficient with her job. i got your point and i understood where you are coming from. don't worry i am not here to judge anybody's action. you all have a point and that's what is important. i know by all means you will return extra money...you are honest enough to do being one among the cashiers before who expereince how it is to be short at the end of the day!

Hi Sedel, Our conscience never stops working...you are very considerate for thinking about the person who will pay for the extra money you receive. so, it's just right to return it. kepp it up and this is a good value worth passing on the next generation. thanks for responding!
17 Jan 10
If I am given more than I should have received when getting my change it depends on the type of establishment I am in. If it was a small independent retailer I would most likely be honest and hand the excess change back. If it happened in a big chain store or big business I would keep it as the company in question would not particular miss the little bit of extra cash handed to me in error.
@sid556 (30953)

Actually, they might miss it. Each individual cashier has to have her drawer balance at the end of her shift. If it does not balance, that extra change you got may have to come out of the cashier's pocket. Trust me...they'll notice.

honestly i dont. har har har specially when i am in a hurry so sometimes if my change is not complete i will only realize it once i am home already or when i am counting my expences. but my wife does. she gives it back as long as she notices it. if not then she will feel sorry and hope she counted her change at once. so my wife always count her change before leaving.... but i dont. but if her change is not complete she demands also for the complete change, i dont har har har. i am too shy to ask for that.

Hi 7thbird, That's a good praactice of counting the change before leaving the counter or cashier. making sure that the change is right--we can always ask for any shortage and we can also return any extra. you are crazy friend..i am sure if you realize it that the change is not complete and you'r just near the area you will go back and ask for it but not to return the extra if ever it happened hahahaha...you are lucky for having a good and honest wife. she's commendable friend. please tell her that. thanks!

Several times I've returned the extra change, but several times I haven't. It mostly depends if it is somewhere where I shop frequently or not. I really wouldn't want to keep the extra change and then to be too ashamed to return to that shop.

Hi Techgurl, You have a point there. If returning it will create a great hassle for you when you realized that you recieved and extra change then it's practical to just keep it. But if there's still a chance to do i know you will surely return it. thanks friend for taking the time to respond. i appreciate!

Hi Amyson, I experienced that with a cab last week. the cab driver gave me extra change and i returned it. he was very happy for my honesty. i saw the glow in his eyes how grateful he was for the gesture. I am happy that you always do it and being conscious about what your conscience will tell you. so, lesson learned...let's always count our change to make sure that we receive the right change!

It depends on when I find out, if I see it at once, I'll tell, but if I realize it when I've left the shop I won't return with the money. Maybe if it was very much though, but that's never happened.

Hi Torunn, At least you have that feeling of returning it right after you learn about the extra money received. however, if it will create certain discomfort on your part again, it's just practical that you keep it not unless it's a great or huge amount that can create trouble--i know you will do the extra mile to return it am i right?!!! for sure you will. Thanks for sharing.

good realizations. what is important is the eagerness to return it and lessen the problem that it will cause to the cashier or the shop assistant. i know you will do it not for anything else but because you believe that it's the right thing to do. hurray!

If it was so much that the person who had made the mistake would be in problems, I probably would, but not for some cents. I think that's because I feel more responsible for the real person (the shop assistant) than the shop itself. Noone gets in trouble for some cents, and I'm not even sure I would notice that if I didn't realize it at once.

What I do with the money in this kind of a situation really depends. The times that I realize what is happening as soon as it happens, then I point out the error to the other person. However, there are many times that I won't realize that an error has been made for days and in that situation there is nothing that I can do at that point but hold on to the money. I don't use cash on a regular basis so this is something that has only happened a very few times in my life.

Hi Dorann, So using card helps prevent such error. you gave me an idea. it's also good for your to check on the charges being made on your card. thanks for sharing dorann. i can relate with you for knowing such after some days. since we are just near the mall, the next time i visit the mall which is every weekend-- i return the change or inform the cashier that she made an error the last time we had the transaction. she's delighted and very grateful that i return the excess money.

hi, any excess amount is given to us it is a very good thing to return it.once i went to buy some things in the retail shop.the shop had two brothers who maintained it.one was packing one was billing. So what happend i paid for the things and brought them home.when i checked that they had not taken money for a soap.then next week i went to the same shop and told them that they didnt bill for the soap. Then i paid for the soap and received a smile and "thanks" from the shop owners. This is a feeling of honesty. i didnt use someone else things or money which is never mine.once if we try to do then we can know what nice feeling it gives us in ones heart.

Yes, I have tried that and no, I did not return it because the saleslady was mean, so I said, there you are, your punishment for being mean. She will have to pay a price for her meanness and she really did. I am sure the company charged her for the discrepancy.

Hi Cutie, Oh sad to hear that...so, maybe it's more proper if you inform the management about her being mean and still return the excess amount--the manager will be able to deal with her as it relates to her poor customer service at the same time her being careless in giving the change. so, in a way that's a revenge. thanks friend for sharing and welcome to mylot. have fun here!
