Smoking in front of Parents or Elders.

I just saw a discussion on smoking in another forum, and I thought that I should ask this question, in India it is a unwritten law, that you must not smoke in front of your parents or elders, like an elder brother or elder sister.Everybody follows this rule, and even people who are in their 60's do not smoke in front of any body is much more elder. I do not see this kind of culture in the western countries, and I am curious about it, and would also like to know more about the smoking cultures in the other parts of the world.

I think smoking in front of elders is just disrespectful no matter what country one is in. Matter of fact, smoking around any nonsmokers is disrespectful. Personally, people just need to stop smoking. It's disgusting & harmful.

It is just a matter of ethical issue. Those who are in raised in a good manner would never smoke in front of any non-smoker. Not just the elderly. Although it is embarrassing to admit, but here in our country no matter where they are and who are around them they just smoke until their lungs had enough. I am not generalizing things, but most of them are. I for one are those that hate smokers especially when I will be able to inhale their secondhand smoke. It irritates my lungs plus I hate the smell. Even do I admit I tried it once, but never liked it and will never do it again. I just hope that people here are more disciplined regarding that issue. I kinda envy that part of culture in your place.

You are like me, even though I tried to smoke, I did not like the smell, and left it.One more thing the second hand smoke what we call as passive smoking is more dangerous than the smoking.

Yeah, secondhand smokes are worse than the first hand smoke. But heck, people here just don't care. I just give them a bad look and cover my nose with handkerchief. Some are affected by it but most are not.

Here in our country, as far as I know there is no such law with regards to smoking in front of elders, we only have here a violation if you smoke in public vehicles and places not allowed to smoke but regardless if we have that law or not I believe it is disrespectful to smoke in front of elders. In other people's mind it is bad if you smoke in front of elders and they would think they tolerate you for doing what is not right for your health.

It is not a law, I had mentioned it is an unwritten law, that children will not smoke in front of their parents.

Yes I know and whether it is a law or unwritten law in your country it doesn't matter to me. I was speaking for my country and the rules here too.

Actually, here in our country it was never discussed about that matter if it's just or unjust to smoke in front of the elders but since we're very respectful of those older ones then we knew from the very start that we shouldn't do it or else it's a sign of disrespect to wit. In my own opinion, we shouldn't do it so if ever we wanna smoke then the best place is to stay away from people that way we were able to create a lung cancer and other related diseases caused by smoking, on the other hand, perhaps its very irritating when someone smokes in front of you where in fact you never smoke, isn't it?

it is quite irritating when someone not only smoke but also blow the smoke on your face. Some people have the bad habit of doing this.

I am from a western country and i have to admit, that most of us can be rude and forget oer manners and respect towards our elders. I am over 30. I smoke, but never in front of my parents. I am married, but i am still a child in my parents house when i visit. I smoke outside, where they cannot see it. I feel it is rude to smoke in fornt of your parents and elders.

I think that most people feel its rude to smoke in front of elder people unless the elder person does not offer for you to smoke with them. For example, if an elder does not smoke then you will not purposely seek to smoke in front of them but, if they do smoke and start smoking then you could probably assume that it would be okay to smoke with them. I believe however, in a western society it is different depending on where you live and the exact situation as some people will be more liberal on such issues.

I feel - this is always recommended to avoid smoking and drinking in front of elders. Your elders might be well aware of your habits but not smoking and drinking in front of them is a respect to your elders. This is a mutual understanding, even elders should avoid smoking and drinking or any unlawful things which is unethical in society.

Yes...its true friend..we have this culture the younger can't smoke in front of elders...even if they are drunk..they can't come in front of the elders..this happens many times in many families and many places i have seen it ...though the elders smoke themselves, still the rule has to be followed, it just the symbol of respect that is seen in the country everywhere.

Hello rameshkumaar57 me too ealrier in my college days used to take up to smoke a little, though have quitted it as didn't suit me well as well as its harmful to my health.Well do think that smoking in front of elders shows our disrespect towards them, even its considered as bad manners.Even myself i used to take up ciggarate in lonely place with my friends, didn' even bothered to inform any elder about it.In western countries its commmon to smoke in front of elders but few peoples over there too follow the discipline.Actually in western countries there is more of studdness, as well as less traditions, so its working well in that countries.Anyways ciggarate smoking is injurious to our health, quit it, Happy mylotting.

In any country you consider, no parents or elder will tolerate if their children smoke infront of them. Smoking is injurious to health. The parents and elders will be exposed to that smoke also. Passive smoking is also dangerous. Aboveall, this is really an indescent act to smoke infront of parents. I suggest smoking should be banned by the government.
