I live in Europe where we have region 2 DVDs. I have bought a region 1 DVD and I am trying to get it to work on my laptop. I don't think I will be able to use it on my DVD player.
Why do DVDs vary between different regions?
Do you think the whole world should have the same DVDs?

I think the world would be in a MUCH better place if we all had the SAME DVD and DVD players! Even outlets! I think having to buy all these converters is stupid. But whatever. I'm having a trouble relating to this post actually. One of my favorite TV shows, Without a Trace, seasons 3 and up are ONLY made in the UK (and I live in the US), so in order to watch seasons 3-8 (I believe) I'd have to order them from amazon.co.uk & buy a DVD player from the UK. And a converter for my American outlets.
. It's a hassle, I tell ya! But I'm seriously considering doing it. I love the show THAT much!

Hi Maezee..You don't need to buy the converters, they're usually free to download in the case of a computer one,or in the case of a standalone player,a free code with the instructions on how to enter it using your remote control.. I made my UK spec.DVD player into a multi region one,and buy other region discs to play on it..I assume a US spec.player will play a UK disc once you have the correct code..good luck!

Hey max, I wasn't aware there were two. I knew some had some security code or something so they couldn't be copied. Oh, is they new one 'Blue Ray' I believe that's a new system, that will be the one used in the future. I'm confused!

I'll never forget when I saw the first Travel DVD. It was in a huge place and it was just like I was there. It was a travel company that was coming around and showing everyone the places they could travel. It looked like I could reach out and touch the trees or go climb the mountains. This was back when videos were less than great, but this travel company had the most amazing shots of everything. I soo wanted to go to those places.
IN the states, the DVDs are compatible. I do remember that we had 2 kinds of video players at one point. VHS and another kind. VHS won out. But it was a pain becaus whichever player you bought, it seemed like there was something out there you wanted that you couldn't play on your player because it came in that other format. People that had the other kind of player were upset because after the VHS was all they could get, they were stuck with a mostly useless machine and only a few old things they could play on it. So, yes it would be nice if they would figure out the best one of something and have everyone "on board" with it. In the USA, they did manage that for DVD players. Not sure if I got something from Canada, if it would be compatible.
