Avatar: a copycat of Dinotopia

I've seen the trailer of Avatar by watching New Moon. I thought Avatar has really good graphics, but after watching it I was disappointed. Some part is somewhat similar to Dinotopia, which also has good graphics, for me, even better than Avatar. I'm not sure if both of these movies has the same writer. Nonetheless, I still commend the efforts exerted into Avatar. Do you also notice it or you haven't watch any of the aforementioned movies?

The story and screenplay has been there for years. Going to a place on a mission, but falling in love with the host people, and getting married, fighting your own country. Eg, The last samurai. The thing that makes avatar the best among these is the graphics and amount of technology used.

Another comparison. The graphics are good, but I believed they overdo it. The Avatar actors almost prevail over the real actors; they have more exposure. The maim jake has fewer scenes, noting that he's the heroine of the story.

First of all Thanks for your comments, and choosing this as a best response. I have seen avatar, in a small theatre, with poor audio, although they claim they have DTS. There were also many scenes cut in the movie, since the movie was dubbed in my native language. Dont know why they do it. I am yet to see the complete english version of the movie.

Katkat: "he's the heroine of the story"? LOL, had to pick on ya on that one--only in hollywood, cross-dressing alien marine with gender issues leads the charge...

Oh, I haven't watched Dinotopia yet but I think I had seen the trailer. Uhm, I comment AVatar for the very extreme/best 3D technology they have applied/used in the movie. If some parts are the same or just copycat of DInotopia then that would be minus points for the movie. Actually, the movie plot was quite predictable, it's just that the movie was so well-created and digitally interpreted. Thus, you just haven't noticed the time you've spent watching the movie. It's fantastic, movies with such ability to consume time unknowingly is really a good movie. In short terms, you are hooked. The movie which popped to my mind when I was watching Avatar was the Planet of the Apes. The question in my mind was,"Would the he-human would love this she-alien?". It's bizarre feeling but it just reflects that inner beauty is much better than the physique. thanks.

The Last Samurai, then Planet of the Apes, well the list of similarity keeps growing. In terms of visual effect, I think Transformer has good balance between visual effects and human emotion; they work well that a sequel followed. For the case of Avatar, I doubt if there would be a sequel. You've made a good point, especially your last sentence. It's good to be reminded of this fact every now and then.

What Ican say about that is Best Movies have no sequels. Titanic has no sequel though many rumors had arisen back then. What else 300 is a good movie though I haven't watched it yet but based on feedback it really was. I think James Cameron has that thought in his mind too...

When did Dinotopia come out? Who was in it?

The comparisons between the storyline to Avatar and other movies are numerous, because the underlying storyline is nothing new and one of the reasons why some have called it "Dances with Smurfs". What for many people has made Avatar a great film is the novelty of all the CGI coupled with 3D, although the test of time will decide whether it is truly great. The trouble is taking modern cinema as a whole there are very few truly original movies because Hollywood makes movies which the mass public want and sadly that often means reworking tired, over used storylines all the time. Rather than something original and taking them out of their comfort zone.

The storylin and theme of Avater are almost identical to those of Princess Mononoke, Fern Gully and I'm sure a bunch of other movies. It's just a new way of telling the story. But how could you think the graphics of Dinotopia are better? w
