There are many misconception when it comes to hiring older people over the young. Some employer are hesitant to hired older people as they think they are all over qualified, over experienced, often sick and should need to retired instead of working. Aside from those various reasons they think that the older people have a hard time to learn new technology as they been out of touch of it for a longer time and their is a need for longer training and tutorial matter. While on the other hand despite the age differences over the young, older people could start immediately and other still have active mind, and they could be a good mentors over the young. How about you, What do you think are the advantages of employing older people over the young? Kindly shares your thoughts. thanks 1-23-10

There are always advantages and disadvantages when it comes to employment of ple, belonging to different age group ^_^ OLder ple are good in a way, for they bring in experience, and impart their skills to the younger generations ^_^ BUT some companies, they prefer fresh ideas, and creativity, and that's why young employees comes in ^_^ It will be good if there's a balance and well blend of young and old in the company, so that they can be learning from each other, and contribute their best for company ^_^

hi kun, Yeah, older people are more flexible, dependable, reliable and dedicated when it comes to work and they are very professional though the problem exist after a longer retrenchment some plan to apply but end up as a failure since the company does have age requirements which limit opportunity for the older people. while younger people as you mention have more active mind and body which is very true unless they are so engross with their weaknesses having changeable mind, being impatient and being lazy most of the times it spoil the opportunity to become more productive as they staytoo long at their current employer is highly threaten if they never change their worry free attitude to something serious..

Hi neelianoscet, There are advantages and disadvantages to both as you have shown. The advantage of hiring someone older is of course, experience, not only in their work but also in life. It's difficult to be on this planet for fifty or sixty years and not have learned something that can be useful in almost any job. Blessings.

Since older people have a harder time getting jobs, they're more loyal to their employer than a younger person would be.

hi 6precious, Yeah, and that is because of competition they make sure to perform their job better than the younger ones fearing of being fired on the job especially if they becomes so slow both in the body and mind so the employer would have to think twice. thanks

It all depends on the job you are doing. Some jobs require youngsters whose reflexes are very fast. Some jobs require experience where when a problematic situation arises they can solve because of experience. But old generation should get update with the latest developments in the technology.Experience always has some importance.

hi singuri, yeah, it really depends on the requirements and the job function. So far most of the jobs the market offer caters a lot to younger people and those which requires a lot of specialization the older who have more experience are the one who qualify for the job, because of their vast experience, more knowledge of the job specification and mature enough to take a serious roles comparing to the young minds. thanks

hi singuri, Inded it is most manifested as when it comes to functionality the demand of the job depending on the capability of the person to act fast as possible or slow down when the skills being uses is on the mind and not based on the performance of the physical comes the differences between white and bluecollar job.

hi dirky, Those are really happening in real life which is very bothersome some employer judge the people with the looks and age before a potential employee show her skills it is cutoff before one could exhibit her knowledge of the job because of lack of fair opportunity given to the older people respect should also be exercise by the yopunger people as in the future they also becomes old so it is not a good feeling being rejected and judge instantly when one is not given a chance to show her skills.

Well now as I am an older person I have to say that when I could work I looved learning what I did and I learned fast so I ended up treaching all the younger ones. The one thing I learned from a younger person was how to use the Caliper to guage things that was fun as all get out. Young ones have to be trained then need to keep an interst in what they are doing. I noticed most didnt keep their minds on the work the girls were loking more at finding a date or some one to marry!

hi lakota, yeah, when it comes to learning is a continued process and there is no stopping by. Their should be no age limit is only matter of number the mind is very powerful and could think relentlessly so everyone have the ability to absorb learning depending on her susceptibility to adopt newer information at a fast pace. thanks

Funny I came across this discussion. Just the other day at work we were talking about the older people that are hired. I have been at my place of work for almost a year now and sadly I have been there the longest out of all the other second shift girls. Seems the ones that last the least amount of time are the older ones. And Im not talking about old as in retirment age but older as in late 30's to in the 40's. The ones I would think would be the most responsible are the ones that just don't show one day, don't call and we never hear from them again...most never even come back to get their last check! Yet the younger girls that you would think would be irresponsible and go out and rather have fun are the ones that last longer. Wierd how it turns out that way.

hi mmessageme, Yeah, those are the set up in most company since the older people already undergo the times when they also given a lot of task when they are still new so the procedures is as to the newbie to hone more their familiarity with their crafts or offices protocol. It may also be depending on the frame of mind of other people in charge as some company even those in seniority position they have all the same work load and no exemption unless one call for sick or leave in the same time.

In Japan there is a system now to keep both old and new working together because age brings wisdom, experience while youth bring energy and fresh outlook.Age may really be a liablilty but they bring the knowledge to do the work without any training while young people may need training and as such there takes some time .Consequently both have their disadvantages and advantages. I would think though that if I had to choose I would go for youth and take the time to train them even and then secure a better future with teh youths

hi ronnyb, That would be a great news and i do hope it other countries would also follow the same model as japan did, since in my country their is an age limitation when it comes to working and those age above 30 years old have less opportunity to be hired when in fact is one pf these productive years where a person could perform better on his jobs with the most serious one since they are getting older and like to save a lot to strengthen their sources of finance for themselves and for their family sake. I am in favor of hiring both the old and new and one of the other they have some exquisite talents and skills which they could both shared to each other receiving benefits while at the same time serving their company.

ho aerous, yeah, very true older people are more dependable, flexible, trustworthy and reliable. because they are already older they need to think ahead of the competition as when they tend to lagging they would eventually comes out as unsuccessful and the younger applicant are just an inches away to grab and bite the opportunity once the older becomes lax with her responsibility..

I'm one of those people that falls somewhere in the middle of being an older person and a younger person, so I can really see positives to both types of employees. However, I think that the main benefit that you are going to get out of hiring an older person is that they are going to take their job more seriously. They aren't as likely to just call into work willy nilly so that they can have a day off for whatever reason. Also, I think that an older person has more experience so they would be able to complete the job more efficiently.

hi dorannwin, yeah, very true older people are more sincere, dependable, flexible, good role model and eventually could be trusted to accomplished any task or any assignment given by their superior and very organized to finish all her task at an exact time without much delay.

Hiya neelian, Older People should have a place in all Societies that they don´t have now. They are needed everywhere because of their experience if it were not for them we would not be here now and so on. It´s all their work and effort that makes things work for us now all around us. No one with an active mind should think of retiring 200 years ago no one could retire they had to keep working to be able to eat. They should also be given a decent wage and respect too not some measly pocket money for doing a Job that is as much hard work as anyone else.

hi lovingangel, Yeah, that is the sad fact and even those in the middle adulthood, such as those above 30 they are less job offer and most goes to those age 30 and below which is injustice to the labor system hiring process. very unfair to the older people when they have the ability only to find out after interview they are not eligible because of age differences some employer favor the young who are willing to go under the table just to be hire by employer which fall somehow to nepotism with favoritism.
• Philippines
4 Feb 10
hi lovingangels, Yeah, Equality should be the implemented whatever age as long as one is capable to make the job done well that its not gonna be a problem as long as the employer see the truth behind every applicant should be given right to show their talents and skills to show their potential before rejecting them upon first impression or what is being written in the resume. I am also poor in math like algebra but in terms of business math and accounting I find them easy which lead me to take courses in Business administration as my course in college. I just hate complex math. I also been a cashier in a bowling complex but I resign since i often encounter drunk customer who often use foul words. So when i never feel well to any kind of environment even it pay well it becomes a poison to me so it is better for me to have a low salary and stay in a healthier environment instead with less stress. I do hope so in the future employer should not judge people when hiring with age alone but all should be given a chance to prove their worth so everyone happy being able to work and earn for themselves.

Hiya neelian, Still I think that People of all ages should have a chance to do some kind of work. They pay sorry guys, "disabled people" I hate using that term disabled sorry again a measly wage to do stupid things they are not treated like normal people either. Same goes for others. All of us have some kind of problem I have a great problem with Maths but have taken heart from something someone told me if you were terrible at maths you are above average intelligence and very creative. Now that is not considered a problem but to me it is I could not work as a Cashier for example. When there is equality for people with problems then I may vote for their system unti then they can count me out. Maybe when that time comes all People will be equal just hoping but maybe it will come true.

in the work, you can always find old employees and young employees. Each employees has their own roles in the company. Younger employees are still fresh, inexperienced, emotionally unstable, but they are hardworker, strong, and have full of fresh ideas. While older employees are full of experience, emotionally stable, good decision maker but they are often think that youngsters are incompetent and risk takers. When a company can combine and makes them work together in harmony, then the company will have good regenerations (transfer of experience from older to younger) and definitely good performance. but somehow, this are likely impossible to be done. Employing older people are good, employing young employee has their own good as well. balancing this will be the best solution, i think

hi cintoy, Yeah, most CEO and those in the upper level management are handled by old people rarely one could see a young faces except if his family own the company. since most older people already see the future and experience the past. they are more of visionary not a dreamer since when they have plan they make it true as soon as possible with less waiting. they have more determination which outdo the young who are still have to undergo many stepping stone projects before they could achieve what the older people have achieve.

The biggest advantage in the world to employing older people is the amount of experience they have. Young people are still learning, but older people have had a lot of experience during their lifetimes, and make valuable employees because of this fact.

hi danishcanadian, Yeah, very true older people have more wisdom while the younger ones need a lot of time to hone their crafts before they could match the experience already obtain by the older people in various field of interest. Though, both are need as one becomes intermediary while other mentor the younger mind to have a lot of self control need with a lot of determination or else the stock knowledge becomes useless when it is not acted upon in real situation.

I think it would be mostly for the experience that a much older employee would have compared to a younger employee. The mature older employee would probably know the stuff better since he has been in the workplace longer. Plus you can help teach or mentor some new employees on the basics of the workplace.
• Philippines
28 Jan 10
hi nijolechu, Yeah, mature employer have more profound thinker, and could be a reliable worker even hands on or manual job they are all dependable, flexible and very mature in their thinking that teaching them some basic and even extreme worked they could even learn at a fast pace as long as the interest remain within themselves.

Older people have much more experience than younger people. Also, some younger people can be really rude to customers, especially in the field of customer services. Although thankfully only the minority, they all feel that they are owed something and make it blatantly obvious that they are just there for the money, whereas elderly people often do it to give them something to do
• Philippines

hi mr.kennedy, Yeah, and it is acceptable fact that everyone whose young today would become older in the future, so the right respect should only be given to the older people not disregard them as even at their age they could still be an assets to the society rather than liability. Older people are more serious when it comes to their work, flexible and very dependable. And the younger people should need to be treat their fellow older employees as fair and possible the same things on the side of the older employees, both are beneficial to help each other sharing various information for the success of the company merit.

ok,older or young, that's a question. Waht I want to say is, in China, older is more popular than young or green hand. Older means experienced, stable, capability, powerful... that's why who just graudated from university will so worried about how to find a job. We cannot deny sometimes young is full of energy and desire to learn new skill, but it cost.
• Philippines
28 Jan 10
hi benitachen, Yeah, as most older people already gain a lot of experience already successful in their career and have already a lot of savings in their account. They are also dependable, reliable and very flexible they are not choosy on the job and are willing to work with anyone as long as they embark on new activities which coud gives the older people lot of exposure and for the young to follow their exemplary good habits.
23 Jan 10
I beleive there is a difference between an old person and an experienced person. Employing an experienced person can contribute towards the quick growth of the organization, while if you want to hire a young person you need to think about the long term reward as employing young person can be difficult.
• Philippines

hi salmanzak, yeah, you got a point there not all people have good experience some been old with little to boost on their less performance while others stand out among the crowds fro being productive through the past and up to the present. Lot of young people are immature and not to serious while older people are reliable, independent and sincere have high ethical habit when it comes to working. thanks
