Do you know of a bad animal shelter?

I remember there is an animal shelter,it's funny they call themselves "Commonsense for Animals",they really need commonsense.About five years ago,I adopted a miniature poodle from them,he was about two and a half at the time. That was a terrible dog.I'll say the dog had issues.First it bit my daughter because he got off the leash, when she went to get him he bit her and ran. Then there was an incident where the dog was on her bed and when she moved him he growled ,so I got bit removing the dog. Then the last straw was when he bit me for taking my glove away from him,and he did break my skin.I brought the dog back and they had nerve to have an atitude about it.They weren't gonna take the thing back.I told them that they gave us a dog with agressive issues and I would just leave him there then, and go home. Then I paid $120.00 adoption fee. They were charging me on top of that to have the dog nuetered. To this day they still send me a bill in the mail and it's ridiculous.I lost out on the adoption fee and they want me to pay for him being neutered when I gave the dog back. That's why I say they need commonsense.Have you had any bad experiences with an animal shelter?

hi java what a bizarre story, wow the animal shelter from hell. In reading this I really think that these people might have abused that dog. If so he is angry at everyone as he expects the same treatment from whatever human he comes in contact with. of course the animal shelter is not going to admit that they are indeed the animal shelter from hell, but they should have been made to give you back the money you paid for the mean dog. I have never had any dealing with an animal shelter but surely they must be policed by some overseers to maintain a quality service. I would surely check.

I have met others that don't like that shelter for a reason.I don't know how they are opened, the strange thing is animal control works with them.I find that weird.I think the ASPCA would be the best to get a pet, because they check everything out about it. They don't just adopt it out.

I don't think the shelter made the animal vicious. That would have been the owners. But for sure the shelter should put labels up describing each dog's temperament. A big dog that vicious would be deemed not safe to be housed, and put down. Beats me why they think little dogs have the right to an extended stay of execution.

He wasn't a good dog.I'm sure who ever owned it prior did something to the dog.I felt sorry for him,but he bit me bad so I could not give him anymore chances.

There is a animal shelter near me but from what I can tell they take good care of there animals, and always make sure they have food and water and a place to sleep.

Hi Java09, I am an animal lover and advocate. You should really report this agency immediately even if it was long ago...check it out and see if things are still the same...When an animal is put up for adoption they are supposed to make sure that the animal is not vicious especially if the adoptee has children. I am so livid about this...I've never heard anything like it, not about an animal shelter anyway...I've heard horrid stories about owners who abuse their animals but nothing like this...I'm so sorry you had to go through this. We have two Giagantic Pit Bulls, a red nose and a blue nose...one, Karma, was adopted from a former owner by my daughter and the other, Gage, the blue nose had to be given away because of moving problems by his owner, my daughter saw him and fell in love instantly, when I say gigantic, I mean GIAGANTIC, this doggie is BIG...upon looking at him anyone would say: "oh Heck no"...because he looks so vicious...and don't get it twisted, he can be vicious and is very protective...but he is also a big baby who only wants to be loved and he will love you back! We are sure that if we didn't take him, no one would, just because of his looks:-( Like with any animal one has to be careful but I believe that if you show them love and really feel it...they know it, just as they know and can feel if you are afraid of them. It's funny how once upon a time I was terrified of Pits...now I am not...I am careful, but not afraid...because I do believe in the love factor...And love our extended family members just as we love each other...oh yeah, we have 4 kiddies too!!! Karma is alright with them...but I've never given Gage the opportunity to meet them because I think it'll drive him crazy to see 4 kiddies zipping around...ummmmm don't know if I want to take that chance! I hope you can find a good pet for your family...is that doggie in your profile pics yours? ~G~

The photos in my profile are a Lhasa Apso which I own now,the other little one is a puppy I'm waiting to get,not from a shelter either. The pup's a Jack Russell mix,she will be mine. She'll be ready in February.I'm getting her from someone who just happened to have puppies. The Lhasa Apso,I ended up buying, and he's very friendly. After that poodle incident I don't want another dog from that place.I'd rather get a dog as apuppy so I can train him with my own ways.Alot of times you can't judge a dog if it looks vicious. The poodle looked harmless but he wasn't.My daughter was afriad of the thing because she was bit by him.I wasn't gonna keep it.

To be honest, if you buy a dog from a shelter it's not going to be an animal that's been loved and cared for, is it? These animals have got issues, or they wouldn't be there in the first place. In the UK, it's usual to pay for a shelter animal - it pays for the cost of it having been kennelled, and prevents tpeople just taking the animal on a whim. You also get your home checked out - which is the bit I don't like. After that, you get them neuteured - at your expense - to prevent any more unwanted pups. A good shelter should be transparent and provide details of each dog. They should cover behavioural problems, i.e. if it's not good with kids, is a cat hater or runs off they should warn you on the kennel sheet. Little dogs tend to be snappy anyway - I hate them - and I certainly wouldn't get one from a shelter. I'd have a rescue greyhound. I've known a few and they are the most beautiful, trusting companions. Only problem is, I've got rabbits so I can't - greyhounds and rabbits kinda don't mix, for obvious reasons!

I agree with you. This shelter don't know anything about the animals.I have to say the dog acted friendly in the shelter then he changed when we got home.I know the owner who had him prior to the shelter must have treated him badly, for him to act that way.He had alot of issues. This dog was a minniature poodle, they probably are snappy to start with.Grey Hounds look like they're a laid back kind of dog.People told me what cool dogs they are.

The one thing I hate about animal shelters is some of the people who work with the dogs really don't know anything about them. A vicious dog usually means a few things. One the dog wasn't socialized. Two the dog was abandoned and had to fend for itself, leading to this vicious behavior. Three the dog was physically abused. It's during this time one has to earn the dog's trust before it'll stop biting and growling. But that takes time and patience. I'm sorry you lost your adoption fee to the shelter and that they want you to pay for the neutering. Best thing you can do is report them to the Better Business Bureau.

That's true too,I noticed that people who work there can't even identify the correct breed of a dog that comes in the shelter. They alway identified the dog as a breed it didn't even look close to.They are a terrible shelter. They don't know anything. They don't even check someone out to make sure they are allowed to have a dog.
