What does everyone think of Readers Digest?

Well they've been around for years so the must be doing something right! They have great informative articles and I like the joke pages and 'increase your wordpower'. But I do not know what to think of their lotteries. Many people think they are a scam, and I've worked with some elderly people who think they really have won something when they send you golden tickets in the mail, and then they don't understand when they haven't actually won something!! I just think maybe they could word their lotteries different, like 'you may have won" or "enter this draw" or something. I do also wonder how they always find where I live when I don't give them a change of address? Well I really don't mean to put them down, was just suggesting maybe there were some other ways they could run their lotteries that don't leave people feeling so ripped off. What do you think?

Hi funny enough I recieve one in the mail and am a bit skeptical. It does not say you have won though but you may win. Do you know anyone who has won?

Hi puppynut! I used to read Reader's Digest but not anymore. Like you I like the joke page and also the "increase your wordpower" part. But what I like most are the feature stories. I am not that familiar with their lotteries. Maybe it was because I stopped reading it for almost 10 years already? That was when I got more interested in Time Magazine and watching Discovery Channel and National Geography. I had the same experience as your's though regarding lottery but not with Reader's Digest. It's a kind of lottery here in our country where you will get entries once you register your mobile number to them. All you need to do is type in the reeipt number of all the receipts that you have and then they are going to send you an email telling you if you won or not. They send the same message over and over. They are always telling me that I almost won so I should try again. Eventualy I stopped joining.

It was really terrifying! They charged me for almost $3.00 everyday for each entries I send them. That was also the reason I stopped sending entries. When I received my cellphone bill I almost fainted. Well, I learned a lesson the hard way.

The Reader's Digest is the only magazine that enters our home but I will be cancelling the subscription when it comes due. I think the Digest has lost a lot of quality over the last year. The books sold by Reader's Digest are also quality materials but I prefer to browse in a book store when I buy books. I have a set of VERY good classical music CDs from Reader's Digest which I play a lot. With regards their constant lotteries, I just throw all the paper work straight into the recycling bin. I think they are legitimate but I can't be bothered wading through all the papers to find out how to say "no" to the offer and still enter the draw. I have heard from several sources that the Digest is in big financial trouble and is likely to close, but I don't know if there is any truth in it.

Well actually that would be quite sad if they closed, despite the lotteries being a pain! I do think they have some really good aspects, it's only the lotteries that bother me but some people may love the lottery part and think it's great fun!

I didn't know that Readers Digest had lotteries, but as for their articles they are informative and interesting. Also, for them finding you, do you live in the US? here if you go through the postal service for Change of address then all mail goes to the new address, i guess the post office sees that your address has been changed somehow, and then redirects the mail back out to the person who sent it, with a note that says "new address is" or something like that...

Their actual subscription is great! It sounds like they have got better than they were with lotteries too but it still upsets some people. Its amazing how many ways there are to find out where someone lives too.

I don't know anything about a Reader's Digest lottery. Are you sure this so-called lottery is actually connected with the Reader's Digest? We've never gotten any messages about winning anything. The only parts of the Reader's Digest that I read are the funny pages, so maybe I don't count in this discussion. My Mom reads the whole thing cover to cover but I doubt she would keep the subscription if they were sending us junk lottery stuff.

I'm not sure how the lottery part starts coming to you. I suppose if you put your name down for in or something it must come. It's strange that some people get a lot of mail and some get hardly any.

reader's digest absolutely not a scam. about lotteries, it true that some people won from that. my aunt was a subscriber in that reader's digest. since my grade school years, i already see that in our mini library and i am sometime encouraged to read its article. It helps people a lot.

It is great to hear that you know some people who really did win because it sound like most of us like readers digest. It's mainly just the wording that bothers me, a bit like spam!

I used ro read Readers Digest many years ago. It certainly has some good articles, jokes, etc. But I get fed up with the constant lottery letters I received. I dont think they are a scam, but they use fairly heavy tactics to get people in. Plus, I found readers digest to be a bit one sided, very right winged in its political views. I eventually stopped buying it, and now only read bits of it at Doctors surgerys.

Readers Digest used to be better in the old days (aka when I was a kid). There has been times over the last couple of years that I have thought of canceling my subscription. I find that most lotteries and contests make it sound like you have already won. Remember Publishing Clearing House? (Are they even still around?) I found their mailings even worse. I would guess that Readers Digest uses an address/mailing list service. If you file a change of address with the post office, or have other companies who do business with you, then a mailing list company will eventually get your name and address.

Havent heard of publishing cleaing house. WHY do you say they were better when you were a kid? Its a shame I think their marketing strategie has the reverse effect sometimes.

I think it is sad that this is such a common "trick" and that many people tend to fall for it.

They are always sending letters to people and my mother is one of the people that joined as well as she is always buying their books etc.I think that they are abit bad sending all of these letters out saying about the prize as there are alot of people that tend to join thinking as well as live in hope that they will win as they send alot of these letters to alot of vonerable people as well as alot of people that can not afford to join yet they feel like they have to join.I would never join myself.

I think Reader's Digest is a pretty good magazine because unlike other glossy magazine types, they are indeed informative and the stories written there are also interesting and well written. I also like the fact that they give amateur writers a chance to showcase their work and earn money as well if their work gets published. Another plus is their Laughter, the best medicine section. I always read that first whenever I get hold of the magazine because usually the jokes written there are amusing.

It's always good to look at the positive side and this must be why readers digest is still loved by subscribers. It is great they support amateur writers!

Hi puppynut, i've been reading Reader's Digest since i was about 12 years or so, my parents subscribe to the magazine and so after my parents had read the magazine, i use to take the book to my room and read the "Humour in uniform" and the "Increase your wordpower" section and after that, i'll search for the true story section and read it.

I have read reader digest for some editions, but right now, I stop reading them for a while. I think reader's digest has great contents. I must say I like them all. It really improves my language and knowledge. I even wonder where would the source from. About the lottery, I never attended that one. Not because it's in reader's digest, but because I really never attended one, I mean, even in another media.

I used to love reading Reader's Digest, especially life changing stories, and the jokes. Often there were tips I've found to problems I had, so it was a nice treat to just sit back reading the booklet, particularly in a doctor's office. I've never heard of any type of lottery Reader's Digest is doing though. It's been quite a few years since I last picked up a copy of the booklet. However, if I were to make a suggestion concerning their lottery games, I'd suggest having an imprinting that tells everyone the rules of the game, and that just because you receive a ticket, doesn't always mean you're a winner. There should be some number or picture match. Such as, you buy this month's booklet and receive a ticket. Your number is A1456D32349. You hold onto your ticket, then buy the next copy that comes out later. Inside the book cover is the winning number. If you win, you tear off the portion of the winning number out of the book, fill out the information, sign and date it, and send that and your ticket back to the company and await your prize. And if you don't get your prize in the allocated desired time, I'd try writing them first. Then calling. Then if neither of that works, write to the Better Business Bureau and boycott the company. So there is my suggestion.

I think their books tend to be expensive and I have never met anyone who won their competitions yet. I used to get a lot of mail from them and bought some things from them, but I don't any more. - Derek

Hi, puppynut. I used to receive their magazines in the past. And I stopped getting them. When I would go to the doctor's office these magazines would be sitting on the table. I will pick it up and read them as I am waiting to be called by the nurse. I don't know too much about the lotteries that they offer. Older people can be fooled by these. They just need to explain themselves in more details so that people won't feel like they are being ripped off.

Hi puppynut, yes, I agree with you that Reader's Digest is indeed a very informative periodical worthy of reading. Those mails that they send out, are nothing but a kind of marketing strategy to help them reap more readers and subscribers. Their marketing department could have evaluated and decided that those kind of bold, eye-catching wordings that you see on the lottery mails work best for their business. Doesn't really bother me much.

Readers Digest is one of the best magazines ive ever seen. It has something for everyone in it. The articles, the jokes sections and the Healthy living sections are my favorites. I rarely find a mistake in that magazine. Its small, handy, extremely informative and a friend of mine to hang out with
