Late Night Viewing

I was once told that US workers started their day so early that you'd not find them awake much after 10 at night. I know that this is not necessarily the case but I just wondered why there is all the fuss about Conan O'Brien being paid to stand down to let Jay Leno back into the late night spot. If everyone is asleep, why does it matter?

Wow, I guess I haven't been watching television enough since this is the first I had heard of this happening..but in my opinion I don't think he should have to step down just because Leno new thing wasn't all it was thought to be...and now he wants what he had..I used to watch both of the shows..didn't really have a preference for either but I mostly enjoyed the guest..So how much are they offering Conan to let Leno back in his spot?

I think that they offered him $11 million Becky. Enough to buy a new bed to lie in the mornings with!

I have no idea what the fuss is about. When I worked 3rd shift which was 11PM-7AM I watched late night tv but talk shows like Leno and Letterman were boring. I preferred the re-runs of dramas like In the Heat of the Night and old movies when they were on.

I have to admit that I am usually tucked up by 11pm so this would all be so much hot air. I find chat shows tend to be boring too. They are usually to plug someone's book, record or political career.

In US many people are working different shifts etc, so in general more people are watching TV at night....at least more than at 6PM....

The press is playing it up as Jay is taking away Conan's job so people are taking sides. I have friends who go to work at 11:00 pm & get off at8:00 am. They never get to see Conan nor Jay & they are choosing sides. Personally, I like Jay much better than Conan so I'm MORE upset that he's moving back to 11:30 than the fact that Conan will be gone!!! I'm of the opinion that Fox will give Conan his own show so he can go head to head against Jay & David Letterman. The fact of the matter is that both Jay & Conan didn't fair very well with the change in times for their shows. NBC feared that Jay would go to another network & wipe out their late night run so they opted to keep Jay as his ratings had fallen less than Conan's ratings. We Americans tend to pull for the underdog & Conan is the underdog in this case. If Jay had quit & Conan continued with The Tonight Show, very few of Jay's followers would have followed over to Conan. You'd need to be a Doctor of Psychology to explain how the mind works on this one. People who don't like Conan are upset that he won't be there...go figure!!!

LOL. I am impressed by your grasp of it all LadyM. It is bizarre. Especially given that those that don't see the show(s) are bothered too!

LOL. That may have been true here before the availability of electricity, but most of us keep normal hours. I get up around 6 am and am usually up to midnight or later. Many large towns and cities have all-night stores and restaurants, and if everyone were sleeping, they wouldn't be profitable. I like both Leno and Letterman, so I'm frequently up and flipping between channels. With your daughter over here, has she found that people go to bed early?

I discovered that it depends on the industry and where people live. My daughter's a student. They lie where they fall!

I was reading about this in another discussion and wondering also what the fuss was about. At that time of night who would be watching? I do not watch a lot of TV at the best of times, but you would never get me watching at that time of night! I need my beauty sleep!

After 52 years you'd think that I'd have gotten all mine by now. But I am still trying hard! LOL.

First of all let me say that yes most working people are in bed by 10 pam, morning comes early, second let me say I can not stand Jay Leno, I think he uses his money to get what he wants and if it is someone else's spot on TV then so be it. Oh I am sure there are those who tell you he is so great and stay up to watch him, to me he is a snake in the grass, never did watch him, there are many that don't work and many that are on disablily and retirement that stay up to watch such cra----. To me it doesn't matter who is in that spot I quit watching them when Johnny went out and I didn't care much for him either.

HI pike, maybe because it's just not true. I work 2nd shift on the weekends and so I am not alseep ever at 10:00 at nite. Even on my days off, I am never to bed by 10"00 at nite. I go out and about during the day and judging from the traffic there are many who don't work that early shift. That all being said, I really can't say as I watch either of them. I dont watch much tv. What I have seen, I do prefer Conan Obrien. He is actually pretty funny. Jay Leno is boring. I never cared much for him and I do think that they are making a big mistake in not catering to Conan Obrian. He will be fine. I'm sure he'll have no trouble finding a spot and followers. Jay Leno ?? do people really tune in to him? Maybe it's me but I really don't find him anything worth staying up for or tuning in for.

I think that at that time it's just "chewing gum" TV. You watch but don't necessarily take much in.

pike that was exactly my sentiment as I am in bed by ten and besides I m most unAmerican lol I do not have a television. weep sob, when we were evicted pikey we lost our televsion set a large screenone as we got too small a truck and rented too small storage space so had to leave it. I could have wept had I not been in total shock over being evicted. all things converged at the same time. our friends stored what items of our that they had room for but they were just renterstoo so had little extra space. any way thats all water under the bridge now. must look ahead to better days.

Don't they have a TV at the home Hatley? I don't think that you are missing much. TV these days is mostly rubbish.

That was way too logical for me. I get up at 6, wake the children up at 6:20, leave to take them to school around 7:30, work by 8. So I'm seldom up past 11 on work nights. I don't watch that stuff anyway, or almost never.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I have to go to bed at 10.30 so late night TV isn't something that I watch too much of Dawn. I certainly can't get too worked up about who presents what and when.

Hi, p1kef1sh. Yes, I want to know the same thing. Why does it matter whom they choose to watch on TV. If someone is a late night viewer they can choose to watch any stand up show that they want to. Why all the fuss? Well, people as, usual are always finding something that they can talk about.. This nonsense is unimportant.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I think so too. But clearly it gets the networks steamed up.

Hey p1key! That is not necessarily the case! Even when I did have to wake up early to go to work I still stayed up pretty late at night! But, I would only watch tv late once in awhile and was never a Leno or Letterman fan! But, I did love Johnny Carson who started the whole Late Night TV watching many years ago! And I did sometimes watch Conan O'Brien when he did his other Late Night show from NY! And what was done to him, I feel was very wrong! And now, for sure I would never watch Leno again!

One of the benefits of living here Opal is that we don't get either of them! But don't worry, we have more than out fair show of late night imbeciles.

I don't really know what is all the fuss with the Late Night wars either. Because when I hear the ratings for the Late Night talk shows they don't seem like much as compared with the shows that are in prime time. Oh well, I am not an executive at a major tv network. lol.

Who knows how TV executives minds work. They aren't like the rest of us.

Two years ago, I worked for a company out of Seattle were they started really early. I came to work at around 7:30 in my previous job, so when I started at 6am in this new job, I was surprised to see that even though I was already early, there were people there who started a couple of hours even earlier than I did! I guess a lot of business of the company did served those on the East coast. And they went home early too. At around 2pm people started going home. I guess, they still had most of the day when they leave work. Anyway, these are the people I think who wouldn't care what happens in late night TV. I bet most of thes people doesn't even know who Leno or O'Brien is. I left that company after 6 weeks and went back to my old job.

I guess that the time differences have a creeping effect across the US. Personally I don't get to watch much late night TV so it's not really an issue.
