I started jogging recently, as i was getting a little overweight. Now the problem is that i am getting sharp side pains while i jog for sometime like after 10-15 minutes. Paining area is side body just under ribcage. Sometimes pains are on right side sometimes on left.. As pains are sharp i cant jog after they are started..If i stop jogging then pains fade away in 10 minuts.. Anybody know what the problem is and how to avoid this? Runners here please help me...

I think this happens, when you first start doing excercise, in my opinion this would happen becuase you're body is not use to it. The only help i can give you is, take it bit by bit. One day start jogging for 5 minutes. Then the day after that increase the time by another 5 minutes so jog for 10minutes and so on. Hope this helps.

Hello hirumon? Good day to you! Jogging was really important to our health because it is one of the best exercise everymorning. Besides it is really helpful to reduce weight. As I remember,When I start jogging this year 2010... I also experience it for about a minutes and my friend told me it's because of we breath while jogging and the muscle in the side of our body stretch that causes for us a pain. I experienced both of my left and right side of body feel pain because my lungs breath properly. Regarding your situation? I guess it's because you didn't breath properly? Or may be you do not start a stretching before jogging. In summary? I think it's normal and you don't have to worry about it. Just continue jogging every morning. I'm sure you will no longer notice it after couple of joggings.

Is it necessary to stretch before jogging. Stretching is very difficult for me as my body is very inflexible..i cant touch my toe without bending knees and like those other stretch routines..They pains me a lot when i try to do those things..I don't like stretching because of that..

Maybe you try other less strenuous stretching routines. You need not touch your toes while bending. It is enough to "awaken" those idle muscles there. You can just move your hands, neck, legs in circular motions, or other ways. Or, you need not go into jogging if pain really persists. Start walking then gradually into brisk walking and then jogging, if you can. You can dictate the pace based on your personal ability.

Oh I know, that is so annoying! You might try working your way up to jogging. You know, try walking very quickly for a couple of days, like speed walking. Your body will catch up, and maybe after a few days you can start a light jog. I think our bodies just have to get used to that kind of workout.

Sounds like you are getting side cramps. :o I always used to get those when I was taking P.E. classes in school. It will help if you make sure your body is getting enough potassium, and make sure to breathe really deeply and really well the whole time while you are running. These side cramps should start to go away once your body gets used to running regularly. ^-^

May be breathing is my problem...i usually draw quick breaths while jogging, not deep ones.. i will keep that in mind..also do i need to take some pottassium tablets or some specific food items? Thank you for your support.

Yeah that's right breathing is really important for every particular work out that you are performing. Well, next time why don't you try to breath slowly and deeply while jogging. I'm sure you will see the big difference, then if ever you already feel tired? Why don't you try to walk while resting. Avoid resting while you are not moving because your pressure will go up and theres a big chance for you to collapse. I'm it will helps you a lot.

yeah, i used to have one of those side pains...it is called muscle cramps. IT is very important that when you start exercising you should do stretching exercises to warm up your muscles. THen do extra deep breathing during strenuous exercises like running. For necessary purposes drink gatorade or any sports drink after an exercsise. Good luck. Happy mylotting.

It sounds like a "stitch" to me. That's what it's called here anyway. Really fit people can run through a stitch but I wouldn't recommend it to you as you are overweight. You say you have started jogging "recently" which suggests to me that, maybe you are overdoing it? I used to do this on my bike a few years ago and wondered why I got pains in my legs! Moderation in all things my friend and you should reap the benefits very soon.

jogging - jogging is a good way to exercise
Hi Hirumon, It has been almost three months that I had not gone back to the sports center to exercise. My exercise mostly involves playing badminton. Sometimes, when I get bored, I alternate brisk walking around the oval of the sports center. I only jog a few meters (100, the most) and then slowly go back to brisk walking. I would advise that you see a doctor first before embarking in any exercise or sports activity. When you have the doc's go signal, do not jog right away. I am no expert but I see lots of trainors with their athletes jogging there, too. I always see them letting their athletes do stretching exercises before actually jogging. They say it is always good to do stretching first as they say our muscles are still at rest and they need to be "awakened" by stretching. There are times that I play badminton right away upon my arrival at the courts. I get muscle cramps after playing. Now that you are getting pains while jogging, I advise that you see a doctor right away. Do not embark on jogging again without seeing a doctor. I always feel confident with a doctor's advice or opinion.

While jogging this is most comman problem you face when you start it but with in few days your body will be adopted to this and you will not face such problem.

This is known as a common stitch, and is often caused by not warming up properly or eating too close to exercise. If you avoid these and it still happens, you can often ease it by completely stopping and touching your toes, or use your fingers to press firmly on the area. Hope this helps.
