Gunagohan mention John Travolta in The 2009 version of The Taking of PELHAM 123. He plays some good villains (alas: Broken Arrow, Face/Off as Nicolas Cage's character was wearing his face, Swordfish and the 2004 Punisher) complete with arrogance to burn. I loved how they made his character torment, terrorize and blackmail Denzel Washington's character in that infamous jaw-dropping scene midways through Pelham 123. Travolta's a good actor (Pulp Fiction, despite being overrated, The General's Daughter , A Civil Action and Domestic Disturbance) but is at his best when playing villains. Alec Baldwin had almost became specifically known for playing villains or evil, unsympathizing characters back in the 90's when he was more in movies (most notably: Miami Blues, Glengarry Glen Ross, Malice, The Juror and Mercury Rising. And even playing a sleazeball in comedies (Working Girl) and dramas (She's Having A Baby) before turning to TV comedy. I like it when a villain can develop a Joker/Batman relationship with the hero like Travolta was to Washington in Pelham. Or like Hopper was to Keanu in Speed. Or if it's a man preying on a woman. I also loved the relationship Hannibal Lecter had with the heroes of The Silence of the Lambs franchise (most notably Clarice Starling). That little girl Isabel Furhman who played Esther from the movie Orphan (2009) is the best movie villain I've seen in a long time. While only receiving fare box office returns, I know this movie'll become a cult classic. And if young Isabel dosen't develop Britany Spears/Lindsay Lohan/Diff'rent Strokes angst while growing up, she may just become the next Jodie Foster. Other actors who are played note-worthy villains are... Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger both for The Joker Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction, Macbeth 1990) Robert DeNiro (Cape Fear) Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct, Casino) Kathy Bates (Misery) Al Pacino (Scarface) Joe Pesci (Goodfellas, Casino) Wesley Snipes (New Jack City) Christopher Walken (King Of New York, Batman Returns, True Romance, Sleepy Hollow) Jeremy Irons (Scar in The Lion King, Reversal Of Fortune, Damage 1992) Jennfer Jason Leigh (Single White Female) Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects) Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Denise Richards and Neve Campbell (Wild Things, 1998) Ray Liotta (Unlawful Entry, 1992) Rebecca DeMornay (The Hand That Rocks The Cradle) Tony Todd (Candyman, II and III) Larenz Tate (Menace II Society) Tupac Shakur (Juice) Edward Norton (Primal Fear) Angelina Jolie (Beowulf, 2007, Wanted) Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, 2002) Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2, 2004) James Caan (Eraser) James Woods (The Specialist, The Getaway, Ghosts of Mississippi) Linda Fiorentino (The Last Seduction, 1994) Louise Fletcher and Victoria Tennant (Flowers in the Attic, 1987) Sean Penn (Carlito's Way) Madonna (Body Of Evidence) Jennifer Lopez (U-Turn, 1997, an overlooked gem) Larry Drake (Dr. Giggles 1992, another forgotten, overlooked gem) Ali Larter (Obsessed) Lucy Liu (Kill Bill: Volume One) The little boys who played Damien in the original 1976 Omen (the opening song was frightening enough) and The Omen II (1997). And last but not least... my man Robert Englund as the original Freddy Kruger.

Well right now I am quite addicted to this TV series called Smallville. It's a story about Superman in his teenage years. The villain there is primarily Lionel Luthor, the father of Lex Luthor. Lex Luthor eventually becomes the ultimate villain of the story. As far as Superman stories are concerned, I think I really am fond of Lex Luthor because he is a genius. He thinks up his actions three steps ahead. Kinda makes him the brains and Superman as the brute. But well of course, Superman is brilliant as it is.

Hannibal Lecter is on top of my mind until today. He's so scary even he only appear 30 minutes on the movie. It sure is the best Anthony Hopkins performance to date.Other great villain is Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds and Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men. As for women, Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction certainly one to remember.

hi tarun, we can't define great, but sholay is one of the most succesfull bollywood movie. it was so sucessful due to gabbar singh only and not due to amitabh or dharam. so gabbar was simply excellent.

Yes ,gabbar singh has been one of the greats in indian cinema but since he has done some good roles (by good i mean non-negative) so i find him a little odd as a villian ,though i admire his acting skills. My personal favourite in indian cinema would be Amrish Puri. He has done some extraordinary negative roles. His voice too had that x-factor which an actor needs to have to be a good villian. He was one of the greats of his time.
