surfing internet safely and securely

I am using antivirus and firewalls to keep my computer from these annoying virus and spam sites. But it still comes up. If the spam is just some ads then it should be ok for me but it is transferring virus to my computer. i try to google and find out that our password can even be hacked by those spam ads. Do you have any solutions?
