Obama may very well be a one-term president if he keeps this up.

We all know certain campaign promises weren't delivered on either due to time restraints or reluctance. Some may never be kept - such as greater oversight when it comes to warrantless wiretaps. At least he seems to be upholding the "bipartisanship" promise, but it may be the death of his presidency. Obama to propose a freeze on government spending for social programs: www.nytimes.com/2010/01/26/us/politics/26budget.html?hp (Someone let me know if the link doesn't work.) This is so in-your-face of current the current Democrat platform, even if it does work he may end up being disliked for it. Social programs are their bread and butter. I am actually very surprised (and impressed) that he's going along with this. Is it going to hurt a bit? Probably - but this is clearly a very serious effort to control the deficit.

I am all in favor of the freeze if it includes their salaries too. I found it to be a slap in all of our faces when they voted to not put a cost of living increase on social security this year....but then DID NOT vote to stop their own pay raises this year. It was on a bill...but they refused to do it. THey want their pay raise. Most of them are multi millonaires....but htey got a pay raise...get people struggling on SS....they get to just tighten up their belts and suffer. That should have told you right there...they care about them....screw the rest of us.

I'm telling you that if I ever get a position in the senate or house, and yes, I know it will likely never happen, the FIRST thing I'll do is write a bill to end all pay raises and institute a 5% pay CUT every year that the budget is not balanced. Mike Huckabee was the one who suggested that on his show saying you'd see how fast they'd balance that budget when it affected THEIR money. Sure, I wouldn't get more than 5 or 6 people to back me up on it, but I'd be all over the airwaves and news networks talking about it so everyone would know if and when their senators and congressman opposed it.

I think it's just too little too late. Aside from that I wonder how many people remember that it's exactly what McCain said he would do as president.

Well, judging from the negative responses I've heard from democrats on other websites, to them it's like Obama is turning into an "urban McCain" (their words, not mine). It clearly isn't a decision that's popular with many of his voters.

It would surprise me if he makes it through his first term. Though my outlook is that he did whatever he had to just to get in office and he isn't going to come out quietly. I think there will be all kinds of problems when it's time for him to go...but we'll just have to wait and see. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

hopefully Obama can change public opinion of him and have the democrats and republics work together to control the debt. As for the freeze i think it may be the best way to get the spending under control. If Obama can just get the unemployment rate down a little bit and work on the bio terrorism issues then he might have some breathing room to work on health care.
