Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, parties, Christmas and New Year are usually enjoyed with lots of food on the table.
Do you have special dishes that you always make sure is on the table during special occasions? We always have roasted pig (called "lechon" locally) here. How about you?

Whenever it comes to one of my children's birthdays I always bake them a cake to celebrate their birthday and additionally I will let them tell me what else they would like for me to cook. My daughter has asked for made from scratch chicken pot pie the last two years and my son wanted tater tot casserole last year for his birthday. Thus, the special dishes that I cook for special celebrations are based on our family's preferences at the time.

Hi Dorannmwin,
Cakes are a good thing to have on special occasions. It would be special to someone if it was personally baked for them. We also do that during birthdays and other special occasions, like anniversaries. We take suggestions on what dishes to have for everyone to enjoy. But, there is always the "lechon" and roasted pig for us during most of these occasions.

Although it was no occasion to celebrate last Saturday, my youngest son brought me a cake he bought from the savings he made from his daily allowance. Well, it was already a special day for me. His thoughtfulness made it so.

Hi Meapas,
Yes offering new dishes on the table would be very enticing to our guests. Having new dishes would surely be to everyone's enjoyment. Hosts need to do this especially if they are always tendering parties. Our usual guests easily notice the foods served.

hmmm letchon yum yum yum. but two years ago my mother was rushed to the hospital for high blood pressure and high blood sugar, she is now half bodied paralyze. from then on when we have celebration we rather buy letchon manok than baboy. i dont like her seeing something on the table she can not eat. that would be very frustrating. there is also pansit bihon on the table on such occasions and or pansit ng malabon i love that.

Hi se7enthbird,
Roasted pig (lechon) is delicious especially those with very crispy skin. There are places in the Philippines that cook very delicious "lechon". And, you are right --- we should watch our servings for the lechon --- they have high levels of cholesterol and fats. It is not good to eat so much of these fatty foods.

My husband always wants ham, and then, he complains about it being salty.

Lol, he seems to be like me at times.
I always want to eat at a certain restaurant whose specialty is fried chicken. They have these combo meals where you have a slice of pizza, vegetable salad, potato fries and chicken on the plate. Their fried chicken is very good but I always end up complaining about it being salty, too.

We can eat what we want. But for those with medical problems, I know there are foods that need to be avoided. There are foods which need to be minimized. We should religiously follow this, for a healthy, happy life.

My favourite is Chinese cuisine. My favourite among them is sweet corn and crab soup and the other chinese dishes that I make for occasions is fried rice, sweet and sour pork or prawns. Prawn if they are available as one needs big size prawns to make this dish. The desert is normally caramel custard.

Hi Allknowing,
I went to the mall with a friend today and guess what --- we dined in a Chinese restaurant. I love it there because you don't have to wait long for your food to arrive. I like steamed rice, siomai, steamed chicken that they roam around in food carts inside the restaurants for people to choose. I love steamed food.

I like to make some kind of desert usually, like a bread pudding. And I like to also make a pea salad. Cakes I can never get it right so I either have someone else make a cake or buy one. L.O.L.

Hi Jahernandezrivas,
I like bread pudding, too but most people opt for others here for desert. It is mostly fresh fruits or fruit salad. When there are special occasions, roasted pig is the special dish on the table. With it, it can already feed a lot of people especially in big parties, depending on size of course.

Well, we have favorites which we usually prepare during get together. One is grilled fish like tuna or blue marlin. These kinds of fish are abundant in our province and cheaper. We are not fond of roast pig but we prepare various pork recipes. Roasted chicken too is among our favorites and we don't forget to serve fruits in season.

Yes, cakes and other desserts --- I like them all. But I have lately minimized consumption of sweet foods because of the rise in my blood sugar level.
There is this restaurant whose specialty is baby back ribs. They taste so delicious that you don't want to stop to rest eating, lol.
