I've only filed for a tax return once before- in 2008, and I really don't know much about these things.
In 2009, I did not work, but I started going to college and I got a Grant totalling $1,600. That's over $1,000...so does that count as "income"? Do I need to file a tax return just for that?
I recieved a form from my school in the mail yesterday stating my Grant earnings and saying to take use it when I file for a return.
Does anyone know all about taxes? Please share. w

Each country has it's own set of rules for filing tax returns. It is better you consult an auditor in this regard. Anyway certain amount of earning is allowed tax free. In our country India, it is little more for women and still more for senior citizens. Evenif Grant comes under income, some exceptions will be there. Further some rebate is also given for women in that taxable income also. Please consult an auditor in this regard.

I was in the same boat last year. If you earned less then the minimum amount of cash from work (I want to say it's $600 but don't quote me on that) you don't have to file taxes. Grants do not count for this nor do loans for school. I did not file income taxes last year as I had no income last year even though I was given $3,000 in federal grants for school.
Now if you did earn over the minimum amount you have to discuss the grant and loan money you got for school.
And all this was based on what my family's accountant said to me, so a professional told me not to file taxes as I had no income to file.
