Now I'm working in a foreign company. My boss and also my supervisor are Italian. Normally in China, we work only 8 hours per day. We start at 10 am and stop at 7 pm. And we have one hour break within these 9 hours. But my boss and supervisor are not that kind of people who will strictly work according to this working hour. They just work date and night. And they perfer people who can work overtime and have no complain about that. But I'm not such kind of person. I think they just pay for my 8 hours. And I work only 8 hours. After that, I'm on my own way to enjoy my life. Regarding this point, my boss even talked with me and tried to persuade me to act like him. Is my boss a crazy person? Am I a bad employee because I am not willing to work over time? But when there is anything urgent, I also work overtime and have no complain. How about you? Are you working deadly for your boss? Do you like that?

Hello landi. I am working as a teacher and we start to work from 8 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon. Three nights a week, I have evening classes. Besides these normal working hours, I work during the break to train my students for competitions. I don't get paid for my extra working hours as I have never asked for it as I think it my duty for me to help the school gain more achievements. Nor has my boss said anything to give me some earnings for my hard extra work. Anyway I have been used to it all these years...Happy working, friend.

To tell you the truth, I'm not satisfied with my current job. The company I work for has several legal and economical issues, my payroll is being held up almost for two weeks already, some money is owed to me from last year and things don't look to bright in the near future. But I'm still hanging on there, at the same time looking for some other job opportunity, even if I don't get same payment or near what I'm making here, which isn't that much kind a think of it.

Hi landi, I face the same problem with you, but fortunnately, i just have one extra work time in the noon. What is the rule about the schedule in your employee manual and is there any restriction in it? If there is not, your boss no right to require you to work overtime. To do the best something, we must have to find the perfect time. In my opinion, the situation is working day and night which sounds like eating day and night or sleeping day and night. It is bad for whether our brain and health. Anyway, time is limited and i would never act as a robot to do endless work~ Good Luck!

NO i wont. In my previous job I used to work 12 hours a day with 1 hour break during lunchtime. It was so draining. I feel like I'm a slave plus they got to put in a new rule that is not written in our contract which reduces our commission from 7.65 to 3.25 because they said they pay for medical and stuff. That was a total breach of contract but dont want the hassle. That is why I quit. In your case maybe i can put an allowance since its an 8 hour job but its your own choice, you are entitled to it. Work only with what you are paid for. :D

I haven't really had a boss that expected me to work crazy hours, although I do work weird hours now because I am self employed. Some companies are like this in that they expect everyone to work all of the time.

hi landi927 I am retired but when I worked I worked partime so if any extra time was asked of me I gladly took it as my pay was not all that big. I was wo rking in our library shelving books and multi media each day. I loved the staff and kept on working even though the pay was not all that great. Here if we work 8 hours we start at nine and get a break for ten minutes, a lunch break and a break in the after noon. you should get two breaks in an 8 hour day also. wow. just one break. I worked overtime a lot because I cou ld use the money.

Hello. Having an overtime is okay with me long as I get paid for the extra work hours I made. Of course it's not okay to work overtime for free! Never! If they insist or force me to work overtime without fee then I would report them to the designated authorities. It's slavery! Now, are they asking you to work overtime for free?

I really think that you should only do overtime if you're being compensated for it fairly. I think people who do overtime have two strong reasons why they do it. 1. They need the extra money they get during overtime. 2. They really love their job and are addicted to the exhilaration they get when they finish a job. If you're not in one of them I think you shouldn't be forced to do overtime. I know in this time of crisis everyone needs their job so I'm getting how you're also worried for your position in your company. There are so may out there willing to do overtime to secure their jobs and you could be replaced anytime, right?
