On a Snowy Day

It snowed here last night. We've got about 4-5 inches of snow on the ground. That got me to thinking. . .what is the best thing to do on a snowy day? I used to like to go sledding and build snowmen when I was a kid. But I'm older now and now that I'm older a few of my favorite things are to build a fire in the house and make some snow cream and enjoy that in front of the fire.

I think snow is pretty when it is fresh on the ground, but I still hate it. I don't go anywhere that I don't HAVE to go when it is snowing or after it has snowed. It is too cold and there are too many stupid people on the roads. I stay home and keep warm. That is about it.

When it snows here you would think that the people had gone crazy. They just don't know how to drive in the snow and that is one of the reasons that I prefer to stay home when the roads are bad. I think that all drivers should have a lesson in driving in the snow.

Oh, I so envy your snow! We're having warm days now - no snow for us ever where I live. Last year we took an hour drive up north to go find some snow . . . by them time we went, much of it had already melted. But we did find some large patches along a road where we saw a bunch of people sledding (or pseudo-sledding with objects that can be used as sleds) and we jumped in on the fun with them. I happen to find a coaster earlier in the year (for free), so we were able to finally make use of it. The snow was half melted or too iced up to make any snowmen, but it was fun to attempt it. In any case, it was my daughter's first experience with snow and she loved it - particularly the hot chocolate too that I packed up that we drank in the car afterwards. That's what we did as kids with our local snow too . . . sounds like poor-man's snow, eh? Hee hee. Say, what is snow cream???

I'm surprised that there are so many people that don't know what snow cream is. My mother fixed it for us when we were children and now I like to fix it for my children. It is a big bowl of snow mixed up with milk, sugar and vanilla. So yummy.

Yes, only from a freshly fallen snow. I will always take mine from a layer off of the car, but not all the way down to the metal of the car. It seems that this way I get the freshest, cleanest snow. Oh, if you want to try it but don't have snow in your area you can also use a snowcone maker and grind the ice apart as well. I've done that during the summer before.

Snow cream - that sounds awesome! Like a snow cone, I guess, but more dairy based - interesting! I assume it's from freshly fallen snow? Out here we wouldn't dare eat the snow that we visit . . .

what is snow cream? I have never heard of it. We spent most of yesterday and today watching movies and spending time catching up with each other. the kids went sledding and then we all took the dogs out for a run and romp in the snow. I love it but...it is still too treacherous here to drive. NC is under at state of emergency still. It might get to 32 today and then down to 12 tonight. Supposed to be awful for the rush hour tomorrow. Schools will most likely be closed.

Snow cream is a bowl of snow mixed up with sugar, milk and a touch of vanilla. Kind of like vanilla ice cream only different.

Come to think of it, there is something that is romantic about snow. I never thought about it that way.

That sounds like it would be a very enjoyable day. I'd like to find an outdoor skating rink. It is something I've never experienced but something that I would love to experience.

I'm deffinatly with you on sitting in front of the fire, but I also like to see my girls go out and have a blast in the snow. It brings back good memories, but it seems the older I get, the less I like to get cold.

I definitely don't deal with the cold as well know as I used to to when I was younger, but I will deal with it so that I can show different things to my children.

I like to knit or read while curled up in a blanket on the couch. When I was a kid I liked to build snowforts and slides.

Once you are an adult, it is easy to see that the things that we enjoy to do in the snow are quite different than what we did when it was snowy as a child. I too like to craft when the weather outside is cold.

not unlike you, when i was growing up we used to go sledding. i lived not far from a golf course that had some pretty good hills. my kids go sledding and go ice skating. as for me, i am with you. i will curl up with a good book inside anyday!

I would love it if my children were able to go ice skating, but here that isn't an option, it doesn't get cold enough for a long enough period of time to give ice skating a try. There is a rink near here, but I've never taken my children there. I suppose I should at some point.

I used to love to go sledding, build snowmen and forts, or have snowball fights when I was a child or when my own were young. Coming indoors always involved hot chocolate and grilled cheese sandwiches. These days, I love to take a slow drive while it's snowing or a walk...so peaceful and quiet outside. Inside, I love to light candles and curl up with a good movie or a great book or some writing. Dosing curled beneath a blanket while watching it snow outside is also nice. I really don't mind it too much until close to March, and then I get "hungry" for spring! Karen

I too get anxious for the spring to come. I really would like to have one more snow this year that will be suitable for building snowmen (my son has never gotten to build a snowman so it would be his first time) but after that I am done with snow for the rest of this year and would like to have a nice warm spring and summer so we can spend plenty of time in the pool.

A few years ago my husband and I went to Gatlinburg, TN. We were lucky to get snow while we were there, so we rented an incredible chalet, the hot tub was outside on the deck. We heated it up as hot as we could stand. And we soaked inside the hot tub, had us a cocktail, and watched the beautiful snow fall. It was wonderful.

I've always wanted to have the opportunity to sit in a hot tub while there was snow falling around me, but I've never gotten to do that and may never get to do it in my life. I've tried to go to Gatlinburg to go skiing during the winter as well, but it has always been too warm when I've been down there in the winter.

I tend to agree with you, it seems like when I was younger there was a lot more snow than there is now. However, this year has been an exception to the rule, we've had two sizable snow falls in our area this year.

Because I'm not very resilient to the cold and cold weather in general, I prefer to stay in on snow days. My favourite is making a steaming mug of hot chocolate and wrapping myself up all nice and warm as the snow falls outside. You just can't beat the beauty of it

It is beautiful to just sit there and watch the snow fall. One of the things that I really like about it is that you are able to see that there really is something that is much bigger than you are.

As a child, one definitely views snow as a really good thing. As an adult, it isn't viewed quite in the same way, but all of the snow day activities were fun for me when I was a child and they are still fun to me as an adult when it is in moderation.

I'm afraid I'm still a big kid at heart, my favourite thing to do is either start a snowball fight, or build a snowman. I love snow! Have been having great fun in the past few weeks. Sledding is definitely fun too though, I take a tray and go to the local park which has some nice hills in it. I also play catch with the dog who loves to eat the snow.

There is nothing wrong with being a kid at heart. In fact, I hope that I am able to stay a kid at heart for the greatest majority of my life. Snowball fights are a lot of fun, but my children and my husband don't want to take part in one with me.

hi drannnmwin if it snowed here, which is most unlikely in that it has not in thirty or forty years, I would move someplace else. I had enough snow the first thirty years of my life in South Dakota to last a lifetime so no no snow for me. Sunshine, and fog, and maybe a little rain but no snow at all. ugh. My favorite thing wwhen it snowed as a kid was hot cocoa with marshmallows, and a bowl of chili or beef stew, or spaghetti with meat and tomato sauce or cheese and mac, all comfort foods on cold zero below blizzarding days when you did not venture out at all. So I still love spahgetti and meat balls and cheese and mac or beef stew. my favorite foods I grew up with as a cold weather kid.

It does seem that people do tend to make more of the comfort type of foods during the winter months. I've been making a lot of chili this year and I've also been making quite a bit of vegetable beef soup. I'm blessed that my children enjoy these things.

Living in South Florida we don't get snow days. However, when there is a power outage or a reason to stay in the house, we pull out our vintage board games. Amazing how much fun one can have playing the same games we used to play as kids.

The last time that we had a power outage we spent days playing our board games because there was nothing else to do to pass the time. It is fun to get them out and enjoy life like we did when we were children.
