I'm from Brazil and I'm a great fan of New York City, but don't know the city. I never had oportunities to visit NY. I just see NY by movies, and read in books about it, and I really love everything there. All the lights, the people, the "style of life", the reputation, everything fascinates me! So, who knows New York here? Can you tell me about the "city that never sleep"? How is to be there? Is NY so awesome that I think? Please, share your experiences there.

Hi Guiltypleasure, I lived in NYC for 10 years. I can tell you some of my experience there. When I first moved there, I lived in the area known as the "upper west side". It was at 181st & Broadway. Rent there was pretty good but there was a lot of crime. I had a car and many times I would go to my car to go to work and the battery would be gone! They stole the radio and broke into the trunk many, many times. I didn't live in that area for very long because I was very lucky to find an apartment in the area known as midtown. I lived on 3rd Avenue near 31st street. It was very close to the Empire State building. Very quiet neighborhood, although in the middle of everything! It's true that it is the city that never sleeps. There is always something going on, lots of people. Most of the city is residential, meaning neighborhoods. There are places that are more "commercial" like Times Square or Columbus Circle near Central Park. I didn't like to go to Times Square because that's where all the tourists go and it's very crowded. There's always something to do. A lot of places are open 24hrs or very late like 4am. One of the things I loved about it most was all the different people and cultures. You can walk down the street and hear any language in the world! I loved Chinatown. It truly is a town from China that has been transplanted in NYC. There is everything that you can imagine....theatre, movies, great food, fashion. Everything! It's impossible to really convey it all. There are bad things too, of course. You have to be careful in certain neighborhoods. I guess it's like anywhere else, though. Prices are REALLY expensive for everything! But, if you know where to go, you can find cheaper things. It's a great city. One of the best in the world. Most people are always in a hurry. Always running to get somewhere. The traffic is horrible. There's a lot of pollution. It's impossible to find parking, if you have a car. But, one of the greatest things to do (for me at least) is to sit at a coffee shop and watch the people go by. You can see anything! If you have some specific questions, I'd be happy to try and answer them. I live in Argentina now and it's a very big difference for me! NYC is fast! Except on holidays and Sunday mornings. Most people leave the city for the holidays and it's very peaceful and quiet. I love NY!

LOL~New york city to me is also like a dreaming place.I'm from china and i know NYC from film.Like Jaz&ALicia keys singing in the song "Empire state of Mind" "In NEW york concrete jungle where dreams are made of.There is nothing you can't do.Now you are in New York. The streets will make you feel brand new.The lights will inspire you." This is a suitable song to define.I also know that NYC is also a city that the talented writers gather like Mark Twian.Hope I will also have the opportunity to visit it~Have a nice day

Thanks very much for sharing. I was reading and imagining what you described. Everything still seems like a very good dream, despite the pollution and the crimes... they are in everywhere. About the variety of people and cultures, it must be awesome, and this Chinatown too! I guess that I heard about about it, i'm sure that is very nice there. I can imagine NYC like you said... Fast, full of different people, with a infinite variety of amazing places to go. And about the coffe shop, I always imagined me in somewhere like that, i think that it's really great to spend the time. There's just one thing that i can't imagine: the part of peaceful. I can't see NY quiet. Oh, Argentina? it's next to here! I think that it have a huge diference of NY. One more time, thanks for sharing.
