Surfing on internet and the status of skype or else?

When I surf internet I'd like to log in my skype, icq or else, make them online. My friends like to log in too. However they make them away,occupied or else. Sometimes they send message, I asked them I didn't see you online. Maybe it is not convenient for them to send message back or talk with frined at once at that time. After changing status they cann't miss the message and talk in their free time. How about you?

I've actually set my yahoo messenger automatically "on" when I logged in to my computer. If I happen to be busy and doing something else and can't chat, I just put my YM on "invisible" mode so that I can still see who's online. I sometimes use a busy status or I just write on my board that "I'm doing something else and just leave a message".
